This is a great filter, and we use these carbon inserts whenever needed. Have found for our small tank (10 gallon freshwater/one male betta) the bio inserts do the job on their own most of the time. But the carbon is especially nice for cleaning the water after using medications in the tank. Have also found that the carbon is great for helping control that fishy smell. :) So, although we dont use these inserts all the time, this product is very handy to have around for occasional use. Highly recommend!
