First off, let me say that this scanner will do basically everything you expect it to. It will scan documents or business cards, and has duplex capability for two-sided scanning. It can scan in B&W, color, or grayscale, and has variable resolution settings so you can work with it to get your scan just right. Overall, this item is virtually identical to the DocketPort line of scanners. The included scanning program is exactly the same framework as youll find with DocketPort, so if youre used to that youll find this scanner to be pretty familiar. It even looks identical, except for the logo plastered on the top. It functions mostly as expected. This scanner does have a couple weird idiosyncrasies, though. For instance, hitting the scan button on the scanner itself does nothing. It doesnt even prompt you to open a program. As far as I can tell, the built-in scan button is just there for decoration. While this doesnt alter its ability to scan documents (a function that can be controlled through a PC application), it is a little irritating. Also, the resolution becomes terrible if you attempt to scan a glossy document (such as a high-end photo or drivers license) in B&W. Simply changing the settings to color solves this issue, but it does result in larger image files. All in all, though, this scanner is a decent purchase. Its one of the cheaper ones in its class, and functions almost identically to the (slightly) more expensive brands. So if youre looking to save $40 over its closest competitor, look no further than the Brother DS700.

I have been using this with my iMac for a few weeks now and am really liking this. I have been trying to get rid of all paper receipts in my house and moved towards keeping electronic copies of papers instead. This scanner includes MAC software which just works. There are options to tell the scanner to scan in a document as a pdf, jpg and a few other formats. I primarily scan in receipts of bills and statements and gets filed away on my Apple Time Capsule for storage. So far, I am very happy with this scanner. Its small, light-weight and doesnt take up much space. Most importantly, it is usb bus-powered, which means just one usb wire to my computer. No power bricks required.

OK, so I hate Amazon reviewers who write reviews that focus on something other than the item, but since the scanner hasnt worked yet, I think that deserves one star by itself. If it ever gets replaced, Ill adjust my stars accordingly. My one-star saga: I got this scanner last week. Took it out of the box at work, but didnt have time to start playing with it before going home for the day. The cleaning staff threw away my box... so the next day, when I found out the scanner didnt work (it wont pull through pages at all--not even the calibration page), sending it back to Amazon wasnt an option. The first person I spoke to at Brother was very nice, went through his checklist, couldnt figure out the problem, then said he would send me an email with a process that could help me fix the scanner, but if it didnt work Brother would send me a new scanner and I could send the broken one back in the box the new one came in. If only it had worked out like that... The email process didnt work, and the second person I spoke to at Brother was distinctly unhelpful, made me go through the entire ridiculous checklist I had gone through with Rep #1, and then said she couldnt authorize the return and I would have to get a call back from a supervisor. Silly me for thinking it would be the same day. More than 24 hours later I got a call back when I wasnt available and didnt even get the supervisors phone number--just a voicemail. When I called the main customer service line again later they told me (again) that a supervisor would call me. Im still waiting on that call. To summarize: Ive had this scanner a week and it still wont scan, and Ive vowed never to buy another Brother product, since Ive never experienced customer service this bad before!

From a hardware viewpoint, this scanner deserves 5 stars. It has several commendable features: It works well in general, and especially on single-pass duplex scanning; processes sheets quickly; produces a good to high-quallty PDF or JPEG scan; is easy to move from one computer to another; easy to calibrate; comes with a good, though not optimally protective, slipcase (and there appear to be no after-market hardshell cases, at least on Amazon); and has software which works. My general use is to scan to PDF, open in Acrobat Pro and OCR the documents, and for this purpose the scanner is a winner. But I couldnt believe that a product of this quality would come without a Quick Start sheet. Is that really too much to ask? Hardware items one-third of the price -- any Logitech or Microsoft mouse is an example -- come with such guides, usually in several languages. With this scanner, you have to hope you did not just plug it into a USB port, but instead looked at the included CD or noticed that there is a small tab on the end of the USB cable that directs you to install the software first. This is minimalism gone to an extreme. Recommendation: An old favorite was the early Visioneer portable scanners from about a decade ago; this one, particularly with the duplex feature, is superior.

I read several reviews and settled on the DS700D. I am using this scanner at my desk at work. I wanted duplexing and color with reasonable speed and I didnt want to pay $1,500 as I had paid for multi-feed scanners for our document imaging system. The setup was easy and the scans are very good. Getting the feed just right took a few tries, but now that Im used to the scanner it works very well. I can scan directly into my document imaging system also which was one of my goals. I use it for correspondence and the many small things that have cluttered my desk.

If you sit on the couch and pay bills like I do, I needed a device that scans the bills and places them in a folder so I can toss the originals. The Brother DS700D is the deal. Everybody knows they should keep their bills after you have paid them so that you can prove you did pay them. But many times we get lazy and toss them in a pile in a drawer or just toss them in the trash. If you really want to save the bills for your own well being and you dont want to file everything in a file cabinet, then this scanner will help you do all of those things easily. The really neat thing about this device is that I can sit anywhere and do bills or scan pictures. I routinely sit on the couch and watch TV when I do bills. This device runs off my USB for power and communication with my Apple Air. The device has its own file programs or you can use the programs that Apple offers. Brother offers Presto Page Manager to file your products or you can use Apples Image Manager to operate the device and then use your folder system to file your products. The scanning capabilities are very good for the average piece of paper. For pictures the device is not that good for color photos but for BW photos it is great. I am in the process of scanning all of my wifes family photos which are primarily BW from the old days (pre WWII) this scanner works great for those. The quality of the original pictures from that era are not that great anyway, but this scanner does a great job in rendering the copy. If you want to archive good color pictures then I would suggest using a quality flatbed scanner. Brother, in my opinion, makes some of the best laser printers available at a competitive price. Since I use Apple products I have not had problems with their printers or scanners. I have two printers, one Multi Function Scanner/printer/fax color laser and one color laser stand alone that is networked off of my wireless router. The portable scanner I added is a quality product that provides portable scanning and does a great job at a good price.

This truly is a great scanner! The DS700D has the following features: Duplex scanning - scans two-sided documents in a single pass Compact and lightweight - perfect for desktop or on-the-go use Powered thru included USB cable - no battery or wall outlet required Scans up to 10 pages per minute (in monochrome mode @ 200 dpi) Scans monochrome and color documents up to 8.5 x 14 (legal) size Scans general business documents, business cards, photos, ID cards and more High-precision scanning - up to 600 dpi optical resolution PC and Mac compatible Includes DSmobile® SCAN II software to save scans in PDF, JPG or TIFF formats (Windows® only) Also includes Presto! PageManager 9 and Presto! Biz Card for Windows and Mac One of the problems Ive had with scanner is correct alignment of the document prior to scanning. Sometimes the feeder reels the document in after it has been inserted and sometimes it doesnt. This can get annoying. Another issue Ive had thus far pertains to the Presto! BizCard software. This program doesnt come close to satisfying my requirements for a digital address book which is quite disappointing. All in it is still a great scanner.

I like this scanner based on its size, ease of use, price, and speed. I do not like, however, the challenging task of aligning the paper in the scanner to prevent a black line, which is usually crooked, across the top. With a lot of care and patience you can feed paper into the scanner to prevent the line, but who has the time? Its not a huge deal for me since I am primarily scanning things for personal use, but I would not recommend it on a professional level. Overall a good bang for your buck.

I dont like using this. It might be true of other compact scanners, since Ive only used this one, but I dislike how hard it is to line it up so that it feeds straight. As a result, its always crooked so you always end up with dark strips at the top and sides of each scan. The dark space at the top is typically a quarter of an inch thick unless you line it up perfectly, which is impossible. I guess Im anal so this really bothers me and I dont understand why it cant recognize and automatically erase all of the dark space at the top of each scan. I dont have time to edit all of my scans to straighten them or remove all of the big black edges. I bought a scanner to save time, not to add more work.

We just got this scanner and the software is a little quirky but the scanner is what I expected. I like it a lot, it uses a USB for power, its small, light and portable and pretty fast too. The actual DIRECTIONS are included with the software so DO NOT plug the USB into your computer. First load the CD, read the manual (not too bad) and take it from there. Do a restart after you load the CD and if the other comments Ive read are correct, its better for a PC than a Mac. I recommend it.
