I purchased this item to assist me with the wiring of CAT 5 cable throughout my home. Unfortunately however the device wasnt able to determine a crossed wire. I had alot of troubles with the crossed wire port. So I borrowed a more advanced system from work - it was able to determine the issue. I was a little disappointed. I would say however that the device would work really well for just ensure that ports map. But leave it to the advanced equipment for intense troubleshooting.

I used this to troubleshoot why the network jacks werent working in the house. It comes with two short patch wires, ran one patch wire from the network jack in the living room to the small remote piece. Then ran downstairs where the network lines come in and plugged the other end into the out port on the main controller. Turned it on and watched the bank of lights on the right side cycle 1 upto 8. Ran upstairs and saw the bank of lights running 8 down to 1. Couldnt believe I didnt notice the network line was wired completely backwards, but the lights didnt lie. Rewired the one end (Bought a datashark crimping tool from homedepot) and voila .. tis working.

I have a structured home/media center installed in one of my closets. I needed something to not only test but to also identify the various Cat5e cables from different rooms to said closet/media center. This little tester worked flawlessly. Even found a problem which was corrected. Not sure if this would be the tool for a pro but for the homeowner, it is all you will ever likely need.

If you need to check a network run between a server room and a network jack youll need two people or leg work to do so.

I was out of town for work and needed a Cat 6 tester. I picked this up at Lowes or Depot. Cant remember. From the first test each unit would give different test results. Itd be perfect on my side but my partner would have on open pair.

I wired the lower level of my house with Ethernet cables. This tool made connecting the heads a breeze.

Works as described. Helped me troubleshoot an issue with an Ethernet connection that was daisy chained. Ethernet clearly needs single ended terminations and cannot be daisy chained. Good learning experience for me. Just wished I knew that before I decided to go cheap on the cables and not run a dedicated Ethernet line for every connector. Costs a little more and requires more connections for the bridge, but no other way to get it done right.

Cannot use it without the batteries it said it includes.
