24-11-2024Almost none of the glamor of the Jazz Age is captured in this lukewarm adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgeralds masterpiece. Miro Sorvino is a fine actress, but shes terribly miscast as Daisy Fay Buchanan in this mediocre offering from A&E. The Redford/Farrow version is superior by far.

> 3 dayIt was good, but not nearly as good as the version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow; I even saw the recent one with Leo DeCaprio and it isnt as good as Redfords one either. The movie arrived quickly in excellent shape though.

> 3 dayWho doesnt want to see a young Paul Rudd as Nick Carraway? While it can in no way capture the beautiful prose of Fitzgeralds classic novel, it is a relatively faithful adaptation of the book. I found this more suitable in the classroom than the flashy adaptation by Luhrman as it is very tame, there being only one scene that is a bit risque for school.

> 3 dayIts a paradox that F. Scott Fitzgerald is currently taken much more seriously as a writer in the United Kingdom than he is the United States, where his best novel THE GREAT GATSBY is a much-taught classic, but most frequently at the high school level. (In recent decades hes been taken much more seriously by British literary scholars than by American ones.) This British television production, co-financed by A&E, is perhaps a better filmed adaptation than many of the American ones: it certainly has in the British Thoby Stephens the best actor playing Gatsby in any surviving version, at least up to the time of its making. Quietly courtly and with a million dollar smile, Stephens retains no trace of a British accent, and seems much more convincing in the part than Alan Ladd and Robert Redford. His best scenes are with Paul Rudd, who is similarly well cast as Nick Carraway, Gatsbys convenient friend and confidant; Francie Swift (in a great shingled bob) also makes a good impression as Jordan Baker. Martin Donovan, probably as baffled as anyone else he could be cast as a former Yale football player, does much better than anyone ought to expect as Tom Buchanan. Only Mira Sorvino seems less than sure as Daisy Buchanan, in part because of her bad hairstyles (particularly in the wartime Louisville flashback sequences) and in part because, though very sympathetic, she can project neither Daisys affectedness nor her spoiledness. The acting is the best thing in the entire production, and is better by far than the fatally conventional direction by Robert Markowitz. This is the kind of TV movie that when Nick gets the invitation to Gatsbys we see flashbacks of various characters mentioning Gatsbys name in previous scenes (as if wed forgotten it). As you might expect with such a director, we get to see Myrtle Wilsons death in a flashback in all its gory vividness (splat!), and theres a montage to be dreaded featuring Gatsby and Daisy passionately together under white gauze draperies. The production seems to have skimped considerably on its budget: the Buchanans East Egg house seems incredibly underdecorated, and the parties at Gatsbys mansion seem underpopulated with extras doing the Charleston. When at the funeral Owl Eyes famously observes, Why my God, they used to go there by the hundreds, you expect Nick in this production to correct him: No, only by the dozens.

> 3 dayWhule this made for TV adaptation was a good, generally faithful to Fitzgeralds book, and had gorgeous costumes and scenery, it doesnt hold a candle to the 1974 adaptation. My main problem with this was that the acting felt REALLLLY fake at times, and the actors didnt portray them as I thought they would. A breakdown of the good... 1)Paul Rudd did a pretty good job playing Nick Carraway. Some of his acting felt forced, but overall a pretty good job. 2)William Camp was a good Wilson, portraying him as not exactly the brightest bulb in the bunch. 3)For Myrtles performance, Heather Gooldenhersh did well in portraying Myrtle as the conniving, selfish woman that she was meant to be. And the bad.... 4)Tom Buchanan was meant to be portrayed as a hulking abusive brute of a man, and Martin Donavan was... well, none of these, to be perfectly honest. Bruce Dern did a better job as Ton in the 1974 version. 5) While Mira Sorvino is good looking, her acting chops in this film were awful. Mia Farrow did a better job capturing Daisys flightyness and lack of attention. 6) And finally... Gatsby. I had such high hopes for this character, since he is the main central story line. In metaphorical terms, I was hoping for chocolate pudding, and all I got was vanilla. What I mean is, Toby Stephens portraya of Gatsby was...blah.Although he is very handsome, Toby needed more range here. But he did a much better job playing Mr. Rochester! In conclusion, if you want to buy a version of this literary classic, get the 1974 version. Just watch this one on Youtube!!!

24-11-2024F. Scott Fitzgeralds tragic love story the Great Gatsby has been reproduced into the form of a movie four different times, 1926, 1949 and 1974 before the latest 2001 version. Having been recreated so many times, this shows that just like Gatsbys love for Daisy, the story will always be around. The story is told in the perspective of Nick Carraway (Paul Rudd), and chronicles the lives of Daisy Buchanan (Mira Sorvino), Tom Buchanan (Martin Donovan) and the ever mysterious Jay Gatsby (Toby Stevens). Before Daisy was married to Tom, she had a relationship with Gatsby, but he wasnt able to support her and had to go off into the army, which closely resembles the life of Fitzgerald. Gatsby comes back to find Daisy married; but still looks at the green light on her dock for some sort of hope that he will be with her again someday. Five years after Gatsby moves back, Nick Carraway comes into the picture and reunites Gatsby and Daisy, making a love story turned tragedy. Paul Rudds portrayal of Nick Carraway was the real stand out effort of all the actors in the movie, as he looked and acted the part brilliantly. Nick is a complicated character to play and the way he used facial expressions and voice tone really brought the Nick from the book into the movies. Gatsby, played by Toby Stephens had the right look, thanks to the costume design of Nicholetta Massone (who did an excellent job with all the different costumes in the movie). But even with his creepy looking half smile, he didnt really capture the true essence of Gatsby as a character, his actions were too deliberate and his expressions were off key. Tom and Daisy Buchanan, played by Martin Donovan and Mira Sorvino, werent the couple that they seemed in the book. They didnt look right together during the movie and Sorvino had a habit of playing off major events and characters like they were no big deal, unlike the Daisy in the book. Another character that seemed to really understand their role in the movie was Heather Goldenhershs portrayal of Myrtle Wilson. The part of Myrtle is small, but pretty significant in the story and Goldenhersh did an excellent job getting the look and the part down. On the more technical aspect side of the show, there were three main areas that really stood out. Carl Davis who did the music for the movie did a great job with the music, most of the time it really meshed well with what was going on in the movie, and there were only a few times that it left you wondering what he was thinking. The set really had a 1920s flair which made the movie so believable thanks to the talents of the set decorators, Marie-Claude Gosselin and Simone Leclerc. Even though not all the actors played their characters as well as hoped, they all definitely looked the part with a little help from the costume department headed up by Nicoletta Massone. Although moments in the movie were somewhat awkward and the characters didnt seem to fit right, they were made up for by other aspects of the movie. Overall the story is portrayed really well. A lot of times you dont get the whole story out of a movie, but this version of the Great Gatsby did as good a job as expected for a movie.

> 3 dayIve bought the 1974 version and was impressed by it. The 1974 version provided us with a perspective which is similar with the book. However, this 2000 version offered a different perspective to see the past of Gatsby and Daisy. It has more details about Gatsby and Daisys love in the past which is origin from the movie director I think. In addition, this movie has more description of Carriways relationship with Jordan. Its a fresh way to comprehend the book. Worthy of trying.
