> 3 dayI carry this umbrella in my large (40 liter) daypack in the event I need shelter from the sun or the rain when I am out clearing trails. The umbrella slips into the exterior pocket along with my 18-inch hand saw. In this position the end of the umbrella is about head high. With an overall length of 25 inches this is not a small package. But since the shaft is a single piece the assembly is more robust than a design made from telescoping tubes. The umbrella is also a bit on the heavy side but in exchange you get a durable mechanisim that should provide years of trouble free service. With a diameter of 38 inches the umbrella provides very good coverage for a single person, limited for two. The coverage is enhanced by the ability of the user to nest their head up under the fabric. This is enabled by the high position of the trusses that support the fabric. I use this umbrella in a rough environment both in terms of hazard for the umbrella and in the weather I encounter. I find the umbrella to be a much better product than what I have used previously (many) and highly recommend it for the proper person and use. It is not light weight and it is not a small package, but if you can accept those conditions it is a very nice umbrella. I will be purchasing a second one.

> 3 dayBought this on Ebay that does not allow product reviews. This is flimsy, collapses, will not lock. A very high priced item for non-durable quality. Wind blows it upside down to make a cup. No locking mechanism to keep it closed or open. OK for very light duty use. Not made to be durable like the Five Star EuroSchirm regular trekking umbrellas that are worth a few dollars more, and have locks to keep them open and closed.

Greater than one weekAfter my first Camino using a cheap compact umbrella, I decided to try one of these “chrome dome” umbrellas recommended by long distance hiker friends. It made a huge difference in my next three Caminos! The biggest surprise was how much cooler I was when using it to shade me from the sun. It felt at least 10 degrees cooler under the dome. For hands-free use to be able to use trekking poles, I used the loop and carabiner on handle to secure it to my waist strap. I also used my shoulder strap loops to tighten it down across my chest so it wouldn’t sway. This was a breakthrough in Camino comfort! Most important, I could use both hands for trekking poles and focus on the hike instead of the weather. It didn’t flip during wind and rain storms, so it has proven itself sturdy. It is longer than collapsible umbrellas so it doesn’t fit inside backpacks. But I used the carry case to strap it to the outside of my pack when not being used. See photos from my trek on the Camino Inglés.
