24-11-2024This is Henry Stanleys first hand account of the expedition to find Dr. David Livingstone who went missing in Africa. The book is both an account of his search and a travelogue of Africa during the Victorian period.

> 3 dayI purchased this book in he hopes of learning about these two interesting characters but was left empty handed, so to speak, due to the period writing style. I guess Im not cultured enough to appreciate the style. I hope to find another book about the two that will quench my curiosity in a more readable manner.

> 3 dayI found this book very interesting. I was struck by the amazing tenacity and bravery that was shown by the party sent to find Dr Livingstone. The sheer will power of Sir Henry Stanley that made him push ahead despite he and his party facing extreme conditions and so many setbacks. Illness, attacks, thievery and nearly impassable terrain, plus food and water shortages among others, he still managed to achieved what he had set out to do. The story continues as Sir Henry Stanley greatly encouraged by his profound admiration of Dr David Livingstone whom he got to know so well, was able to play a significant role with Dr. Livingstone in further exploration.. The subsequent account of their travels and the difficulties they faced together shows the reader another side of both men and makes this book even more special.

> 3 dayAn interesting account for those who like a first-hand, historical perspective. Stanleys writing is a little verbose compared to todays but, all-in-all, quite entertaining.

> 3 dayYou hear about this in school, but you dont learn a whole lot about Livingston and Stanley. The book puts a whole different light on things, and you not only learn about the finding but all the details of getting there which is really most of the story. This is a story of not just a wander through the jungle but about how they had to overcome difficulties almost insurmountable. I am glad to have found this book for kindle.

> 3 dayDr. Stanley went through a thousand villages to get to Livingstone and wrote a chapter on each one. At the time the book was written cruelty was the norm and it hurt to read it. It was interesting to read the thoughts of that day however.

> 3 dayThis book was written by and about one of the worlds greatest explorers and his adventures in Africa. If you are interested in similar travels through Africa, then I suggest Elephant Hunting in East Equatorial Africa by Arthur Neuman or Bell of Africa by W.D.M. Bell. How I found Livingstone is okay but it pales in comparison to those other two books. (Just like every other book of non-fiction.)
