First time distilling, we refermented the press cakes from this years vineyard harvest. Had no idea what the actual proof of the distillate was except that it burned. This hydrometer let us track the alcohol percentages throughout the process insuring that we weren’t over or under distilling. Also used it to determine the outcome of a double distilled batch that was then remixed with tails to the desired 80 proof. Now we age the brandy for a few years....

The only thing I dont like about this instrument is the chart. It only allows you to proof to 100. And very often much of my run is way over. My Rum I like at 130. Luckily I have an older chart from the same manufacturer.

On unpacking I tested this with distilled water and 99.8% ethanol. Dead on. Nice kit and well made. Good instructions too. For example, it warns you not to drop the hydrometer into the cylinder too quickly or it might hit the bottom and break. The most common source of breakage. And sure enough, it sinks surprisingly quickly. Excellent product; recommended.
