Shaving, smooth and foamy!

If you are currently using some canned spray goo from the drug store throw it away and switch to a real shaving cream immediately - you have no idea what you are missing (plus you look funny with dried toilet paper on your face all the time ;) This is a fantastic, very traditional style shaving cream for wet shaving that has a pleasant fragrance that is mild and no in any way overpowering. If you are not already familiar with this type of cream, you just need a little bit on the tips of your brush or youll a) use it up too fast and b) have a sink full of lather that just goes down the (now gloriously fragrant) drain. Wet your brush well and let it drain for a moment to get rid of some of the excess water, then touch it to the cream in the jar ~lightly~ and lather well in a scuttle or shaving mug (even a shallow bowl will work well.), adding water to keep it nice and wet if needed. I get a full four-pass shave out of a single light touch in the cream each morning once it is properly lathered in my mug (water is good! Dont skimp on keeping the brush wet when lathering either face or brush.) This cream will give an excellently smooth shave, allowing the razor to glide over your skin easily. The scent is not strong, but is noticeable for a brief time after shaving unless you apply some aftershave product of your choice, which will then completely cover this scent of the cream. I sometimes use only witch hazel after a shave and I can smell this scent for about 30 minutes at most before it is gone.

Ive been wet shaving with a Parker SR1 and Shark Super Stainless blades for about six months. In that time, Ive tried all kinds of soaps, from the inexpensive to the elegant and overpriced. The soaps work well enough, but lately Ive been wanting to try some of the traditional creams. Based on all of the good reviews, I decided to try some of the Taylor of Old Bond Street creams. I just shaved with Mr. Taylors Shaving Cream for the first time and it was without a doubt the smoothest shave of my life. I just wet my badger brush, dabbed the brush into the tub of cream until the tips were coated, and worked up a lather in my shaving mug. The lathering process was very quick and it felt wonderful on my face; very silky and smooth. I shaved my face first with the grain, then across, then against. Against the grain used to be a fairly painful ordeal for me as I have very coarse facial hair, but thanks to this cream it was pretty much effortless. So effortless, in fact, that the sensation was a little strange at first. I was expecting the typical discomfort, but felt nothing of the sort. The blade just glided smoothly over my face and the hair came off effortlessly. After rinsing with cold water, my face felt amazing, completely smooth and moisturized. A little aftershave and that was that. This was by far the best shave of my life. It was unbelievably smooth and comfortable, and the scent was mild and clean. I really cant say enough good things about this cream. Im truly blown away. If youre new to wet shaving, do your face a favor: skip the soaps and go straight to Mr. Taylors Shaving Cream. I dont think youll be disappointed.

I have never used such a shaving cream before so I cannot compare it to other products. (And of course, we are not discussing shaving cream as a foam from a can) But, as it stands alone, I am quite pleased with it. I have used a number of different shaving soaps such as Col. Conks and Burma shave and there is considerable difference in the two products, that is, shaving soaps vs cream. That difference I can best describe as follows; soaps make suds, cream make lather. Quite thick lather. This comes in a nice sturdy plastic tub with a screw on lid with an inner seal. It is reasonably attractive and will do quite well to hold the product for daily use. It smells reasonably nice though I cant describe the scent. It isnt strong and doesnt last long. If you want to smell, thats what after shaves and colognes are for. When I havent used those products, my wife has never commented about my scent on days I havent used such scented products and she has the nose of a blood hound (Were talking function, not looks here folks. Be nice!) So take the scent for what it is worth to you. The first time I used it, I did like I do on a soap; I jabbed in the brush (silver tip badger) and swirled it around a couple times and immediately realized I had pulled on more product than was needful and tried to scrape some back. Beaucoup lather! I wasted some there. Next time a single straight jab. Still too much... Next time barely touched. Nnnnn-no... too little this time but, I got it now. I just push in the tip of my brush maybe an eight to a quarter (1/8-1/4) in depth with maybe a gentle twist and that should give me plenty of lather daily for what I think will be a rather long time, well over a year. I do have one complaint and that is why the 4 star. I debated a down-check to 3/* star but, I am just too pleased with this to do so. The problem? I find the lather produced to be somewhat dry feeling. I cant explain it but thats how I can best describe it. I have tried dipping the brush in water and lathering up some more but, all that accomplished was thinning the lather. I have to confess, I find liquid hand soap to be just about the best lathering I have ever had and the stuff is cheap! I just hold the brush bristles up, dribble on a little hand soap and start slathering it about. Lather? I should SAY so! Very good lubricity and moisturizing properties too. (Hey! TRY it before you knock it!) I have seriously considered trying to blend a little of that into a quantity of the cream and try it. Ill let you all know if it works. (:^D)

It took a visit to an upscale shaving product store to figure out how to get a truly smooth and effective shave. This Taylor product is just excellent. As with similar brands you can likely make this 5.3 oz go for a year! It takes almost nothing to get a good lather and a softened beard. Here is how to use this product correct. By way of disclaimer I do not work for the company nor am I in any shaving related business. 1) hot wet cloth on beard. Soften up skin and hair. 2) take a good massage oil (lots of oils work from almond, baby oil, peanut oil, and other kitchen oils like olive oil!) and apply in a thin hand warmed amount to face and neck 3) now dab some Taylor of Old Bond Street ( or like product) on your face, massage in, go over every place you intend to share several times, softening and warming the hair 4) using a vibration razor (I prefer my Gillette 3 blade) that has sharp blades. I cant stand the 5 blade type of any maker. 5) NEVER bear down on the razor. Give it a firm pull while washing the blades in hot water and occasionally re-wetting the next area with fingers. You are not trying to take skin when shaving, which is the whole reason for razor burn. Razor burn is lost skin. 6) Using your free wet hand locate the areas of your face that were missed and get any left over stubble. Again, move the razor with gentle pressure. Always let the razor blades cut. You are not supposed to be taking skin or sawing off the hair. The curious thing is that most men do not think or know to use a massage oil on the face prior to applying shaving cream. It is the oil that lubricates the cutting edge. Anyone who sharpens knives knows that one has to have either water or oil on the stone to carry away the filings. Keeping the beard hair wet makes it soft. My worst shaving experiences have been in foreign countries where I cant shave with cold water. I always end up using electric water boilers in the rooms to get water that is hot enough to soften the beard. The worst shaving creams (in my opinion) are the foamy types. All you are doing is putting something like whipped cream on your face and then pulling the hair out as the razor saws away at the stubble. This is a five star product. If used judiciously it will prove cheaper than some food store brands in the shaving aisle.

A longtime user of shave soaps (Tabac Original is one of my favorites), I decided to branch out into creams in 2023 in search of a faster shave for busy mornings. This fits the bill nicely: lathering is as simple as running a wetted brush lightly over the tub of cream and working it up in a bowl, and cleaning up is as simple as squeezing the bristles out under running water. The lather is comparable to Tabac Original in terms of lubrication and volume, although it doesnt last quite as long. It takes a bit more water and a bit more cream to make a similar amount and quality of lather, but thats to be expected. All told, a worthwhile buy.

Finally finished up a commodities product that failed in all categories. Shaved today in luxury. Smooth application. Soothing. Razor glides and does not gum up.

Ok, I will admit it. I am metrosexual when it comes to shaving products. I make my own pre-shave oil (caster, jojoba and sweet almond oils with essential oils for smell), use a Kiehls astringent and moisturizer and am a devoted Harrys blade fan. As the shave cream is the focal point of a good shave and I shave every day, I wanted to see if I could find a cheaper alternative than the Art of Shaving which was just as good. I am glad to say that TOBS is such a product. I have purchased both the Sandalwood and Mr. Ts. The product is the same, just a different scent. Buy for scent or cents. I do not use a brush (way to much work) and just a bit goes a very long way. You have to work up the lather, but the lubrication is fantastic. The blade glides through my beard with ease and I get an excellent shave. TOBS is every bit as good as AOS (and far better, in my opinion, than Kiehls products) at a $4-5 per tub discount. I usually get 4-5 months out of a tub (I know others get more) using it every day. This is a great product -- once you stop using the crappy drug store gels or foams and use a high end shave cream, you will never go back.

This is the fifth Taylor of Old Bond Street (ToOBS) shaving cream that Ive tried. You could call me a fan of this cream, and Ive tried so many different shaving creams over the last 35 years. Once I tried ToOBS, I was hooked! This cream is way better than anything Ive ever tried. ToOBS has just the right slickness to reduce razor friction, is mild on my skin, leaves it feeling soft and smooth, and it has a fantastic scent. Mr. Taylors shaving cream has more of a cologne smell than some of the other ToOBS offerings that Ive tried. If you explore these shaving creams, youll find some are stronger than others. Ive found the sandalwood cream to be very pleasing, but the scent is so powerful, its a bit too much for me. Mr. Taylors is a medium-intensity cream. I shaved at 6am. Its now 2:45pm, and I can still smell it. Its a very subtle scent that is more of a hint than anything else. I like that. It gets into my shirt collar and leaves a very unique, personal smell for others to enjoy. My 4 year-old son loves to smell the various tubs of ToOBS that I have in the bathroom. After I shave, quite often my wife gives me a hug and rubs her cheek on mine, then pulls away giving a pleasing Mmmmmmm of approval! Thats worth the price of admission by itself. I heartily recommend this shaving cream. If youve never tried ToOBS shaving cream and are thinking about giving it a try--DO SO!!! You will be pleasantly surprised!
