> 3 dayMr Robinson & Co certainly enjoy their live projects, but this is a little of a strange one. War Paint is a decent studio album, but hardly a classic, compared to Southern Harmony... or Amorica, because of the length of time since their releases, would have made for much more interesting re-interpretation. So the differences between the two records, Oh Josephine, Movin on down the line, & Gods got it are extended, increasing the running time over the Studio version of the album by about ten minutes. The album also has a looser, raw feel to it, which is what you would expect from a Crowes live record. What makes this album record worth purchasing is the second disc, with six tracks, Darling of the underground press & Bad luck underground press, being Crowe songs, & the rest covers. Clocking in at 30 minutes its like an extra mini album, with The Crowes performing great versions of all the songs. This one main positive to come out of this project, is that it inspired the band to record their next album Before the Frost mostly live. So more of a completing your Black Crowes back-catalogue, than a must buy record.

Greater than one weekThe Black Crowes, in my mind, are one of the greatest rock and roll bands of the past 40 years. Their commitment to making their own sound, approach to rock and roll, and endless touring has inspired so many great bands. So, when they finally got back together in 2005, it was a joyous occasion. Of course, it took 3 years for them to muster up an album, but it was worth the wait, as Warpaint ranks among their best work, a classic ranked along with Southern Harmony, Amorica, and Three Snakes & One Charm. In early 2009, it was mentioned (with very little fanfare) that the Crowes would be officially releasing one of their One Night Only shows, where in they play the Warpaint album in its entirety, along with a few other gems. This was great news, as the Crowes have definetly thrived on playing in front of a live audience. To me, this is how Warpaint should be heard. Live, with a sense of urgency and magic in the making. Each song gets coated with a little more humanity and each song breathes more. Walk Believer Walk slows to a crawl, feeling more thunderous then on the album. Oh Josephine gets jammed out with a joyous Allman-esque lead work by Luther Dickinson. Wee Who See The Deep is a highlight, with Chris Robinson playing guitar and exchanging leads between Luther and his younger brother, Rich. The covers and older songs are a joy too. Poor Elijah, the Delaney & Bonnie standard, gets a Crowes treatment with extended guitar solos and wonderful vocal work between Chris and the 2 female black singers, Charity & Mona. Darling Of The Underground Press is pretty kicking too, an older song dating to the Shake Your Moneymaker days. Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye is one of the most moving songs Ive ever heard, and in its live setting, its an absolute joy. Dont Know Why, Torn & Frayed, and Hey Grandma all get the Crowes treatment. Excellent country-tinged harmonies, throbbing rhythm, and extended amazing guitar solos. Its what the Crowes do best, and continue to do so 20 years down the line. This is a superb live document of a band back in the game. Buy it now!

> 3 dayI havent followed the career of The Black Crowes particularly closely over the past couple decades, but this live album caught my interest because Im a fan of Luther Dickinson. They definitely picked the right man for the job. This reminds me a lot of The Rolling Stones in the early seventies: really good song writing and riffs and incredible lead guitar work. The parallels between Luther and Mick Taylor can be seen in the sheer viruosity of a guitar god combined with the melodic restraint and musicianship of a veteran, providing perfectly appropriate fills and solos. Luther is definitely one of the best in the business today. And if Luther is Mick Taylor in this comparison, Chris and Rich Robinson are Jagger and Richards. They handled the majority of the songwriting (with the exception of a few covers, including one by the aforementioned Stones) and the tunes are catchy and addictive. This type of music is unfortunately rare in this day and age, and a must-own if youre a fan of old school rock n roll. (Side note: pick up as much North Mississippi Allstars music as you can too, because Luther is a guitarist that will be looked back upon as one of the best of a generation).
