The base is plastic that telescopes up and can either sit on a table or be hung upside down by a hook on the bottom. Takes 2 AA batteries as said in description to run each fan. They are easy to assemble.

So we bought this group of four fans and used generic batteries from Amazon and spaced them across a 72 round dining room table throughout the three Memorial Day weekend. They are silent and do an outstanding job keeping the flying critters away on this large table. An added bonus, little did we realized that they provided high entertainment value for kids and adults who like to play with them. Highly recommend. :)
