> 24 hourAlthough the Aqua Clear 20 is made in Italy, the replacement carbon is made in China. The first thing I noticed when I opened the package was a strange smell. At first I did not know where it was coming from, then I realized that what I just opened up definitely smelled like raw chicken. Even after rinsing repeatedly with salt water it still had this strange odor. I was worried about using this in my aquarium; I eventually washed it twice with mild soap and water (I wonder what this will do to the carbon), then I rinsed it with salt water and it finally smelled OK to me. What the hell are they doing at the plant where this carbon is made? I think in the future I may make my own filters using these mesh bags that are sold separately at some pet stores. (you can buy activated carbon you can buy in bulk).

> 24 hourSo I thought I could do a DIY carbon pack for my filter... I was wrong. Yes, I know how to do many things, including rebuilding a 4-barrel carburetor, swapping out the kitchen faucet and changing the toilet guts in the guest bathroom. So I bought the fiber and the charcoal and gave them a rinse... and It Didnt Fit! Oh Ill just adjust the bag.. It didnt fit. After much finagling, it finally was accepted into the filter... BUT! I didnt have room for the rocks. I know when to say Thats Enough. I ordered the Specific Carbon kit for this filter and I was NOT disappointed! It fit perfectly and had room for the Rocks lol. I also ordered the filter block and I have a plethora of the Rocks!

> 24 hourThis is a great filter, and we use these carbon inserts whenever needed. Have found for our small tank (10 gallon freshwater/one male betta) the bio inserts do the job on their own most of the time. But the carbon is especially nice for cleaning the water after using medications in the tank. Have also found that the carbon is great for helping control that fishy smell. :) So, although we dont use these inserts all the time, this product is very handy to have around for occasional use. Highly recommend!
