This set of media converters is an excellent and affordable to extend the reach of your network if you only have 1 device you need to power and use. This particular set is designed for 1 Gbps RJ45 connectors on 1 side and SC connectors on the other. These operate on Single Mode Fiber and these particular units are rated at 3KM or about 1.8Miles. If you have 1 camera thats a mile away from your facility you could easily use this to bridge the gap.

These are exactly what they state - they are easy to set up and use and works for my needed setup. The only thing I wish they stated more clearly is the tip size of the POE adapter needed. Turns out it seems to be a standard 5.5 tip, but its not stated anywhere on the packaging that I could see. I also have not tested the overall speed of these on my setup, but they seem to work as described. They are small enough to easily tuck away without being so small that they seem fragile. The casing is metal with the ends plastic, which is fine. Ill give these a speed test when I get a chance and update as needed based on my personal results.

These media converters are fun - especially if you havent worked with fiber before. Hooking both ends up to PoE or a DC jack (with a nice 12v-48v range to offer some flexibility), they work immediately when connected with a SC-SC fiber cable (if youre unfamiliar with fiber; dont get SC APC cables, they should be UPC cables and have the color-coded blue connectors. Duplex cables are OK too, since you can split them in half). The thin fiber cables are great for long range, and provide good flexibility for future repurposing for 1GbE, 10GbE, etc. For testing, I powered one end thru my PoE switch and the other via a 12V 3A DC cable. I didnt notice any heat output, etc., on either connection, and they seemed to work instantly without issue. My only concern however is the simplex connector. By using a single fiber link, it means that wave division multiplexing is used to achieve a bidirectional link. I personally prefer duplex links to avoid complications on this front. I ran a basic test to determine the ability, while running the media converters with a 50 meter fiber link between them. There was zero impact to my upload and download speed over the link, as measured by iperf, and only a slight ~0.1ms increase in latency, expected from the media conversion process. However, the bidirectional test on iperf3 was greatly impacted while using the media converter. With the converter, I saw 389Mbps up, 896 Mbps down. Without the media converter, I saw 773Mbps up, 858Mbps down. This demonstrates a sharp decrease in overall performance for simultaneous bidirectional traffic on the link. Practically speaking, this will work fine for my uses, but the bidirectional limitation is important to note.

I had to purchase a NetGear switch because I have a security camera thats powered over Ethernet (POE). I can say, so far its been working well using this device. I must say that so far, Im loving it and appreciating the fact that Im absolutely sure its cheaper than a switch! I think I paid over $300 for the GS110TPP switch. Im hoping this lasts but only time will tell. So far so good and a great alternative to having to purchase the expensive switches! I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who has a security camera that requires POE as its source of power.
