Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor, Black

First of all, this monitor is designed for mainstream users who surf the Internet, read and write email, watch videos, perform word processing, fill-out spreadsheets, and write code. This monitor is NOT targeted towards those who need to see a wide gamut of colors for photography, video editing, and graphics design (see the U2410 model instead). Out of the box, the monitor is not calibrated. However, there are built-in color profiles that you can pick based on your viewing situation: standard, multimedia, game, movie, text, color temperature, and finally custom. Compared to other monitors out there, the U2412M features an extremely sturdy base. It promotes ergonomics by allowing you to adjust the height of the monitor to match your direct line of sight. The documentation does not explain how to adjust the height of the monitor, but you can simply hold two fingers on each end of the monitor stand at the top and push up or down (make sure the monitor is upright). The 1920x1200 resolution on a 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio is a huge plus for those who constantly edit spreadsheets. Compared to 1920x1080, you get more rows of cells to display on the screen. Overall, I highly recommend the U2412M as its the best bang for your buck for an IPS monitor in the $300 range.

I had wanted to purchase a larger monitor. My vision isnt as good as it was years ago (Im getting more and more far sighted). Im now using TWO monitors on my computer which gives me screen real estate. I had a 19 1440x900 monitor and a 22 1680x1050. I intended to replace the smaller one with a 24-27. Actually, I was drooling over those 1440P or 1600P displays. The Korean 1440P 27 units can be had for about $300, but just how GOOD are they? I did some research found many rave reviews for the Dell U2412M. At about $275 shipped its a reasonable buy. Yes you can get a 24 1080P TN monitor for about half the price. What you will end up with is a stripped down TV set panel. In fact, you could probably just go to Costco and buy a Visio full HD TV and use the darn thing as a monitor for even fewer bucks. A computer wide screen monitor should be in a 16:10 format, not 16:9 IMHO. That extra height makes working on text documents in MS word (or Libre Office) easier as you can see more of the page. I was too used to the computer based screen ratio to put a TV set on my desk. The Dell U2412 is about the most affordable monitor in this format. If you read the reviews you might come across with the idea that this unit isnt perfect. Well nothing is. Technically it doesnt have the fullest color rendition, and if you need PERFECT color you might find fault here. Ive viewed photos taken with my Panasonic G3 on this monitor and flesh tones are correct with good contrast. I havent tried to set the color balance yet, all Ive done is fool around with the contrast and brightness settings. Im not a professional photographer though, so take this with a grain of salt. After ordering this monitor I found out about a controversy involving panel version numbers. Yes, mine is version A00 with a recent 2013 date code. I dont know what Dell is doing with the version codes, it may reflect where they are buying the panels, and they may have changed suppliers many times in recent history, only to go back to the original source. Who knows? I cant see any dead or stuck pixels, there is no yellow tint or any other kind of defect visible to my eyes. The unit was packed in a very ingeniously designed cardboard insert. Some reviewers have complained about this, preferring the older method of molded white foam packing. Well the cardboard is greener and made of renewable material. That foam is made from petrochemicals, in other words OIL. I prefer the cardboard. So far Ive had this monitor for under a week. Its brighter and crisper than the 22 AOC that is now sitting to the left of it as my secondary screen. If I had an extra $275 to spend, Id buy a second U2412M to replace the AOC in a heartbeat. Cons? Well it came with a single link DVI cable that is a bit too short for my setup and Ill probably end up buying an after market 8 cable. Some would call the lack of built in speakers or an HDMI input a con. Really? If you want those, then go get an HDTV and use THAT as a monitor. This is a COMPUTER monitor. DVI and Display Port connections are what are in vogue here. Yeah some computers DO come with HDMI outputs, but those are probably intended for HTPC use. I have a good pair of full range wall mount speakers hooked up to a 30 watt per channel amp for my computer sound system. I dont need a pair of two by nothing speakers in the monitor!

I initially was in the market for a 27 IPS but couldnt seem to find one for a price I felt comfortable paying. I decided to go with this UltraSharp as it had good reviews from other photographers. I am very happy I did. The 24 is plenty of room for editing large images especially with a smaller monitor working in unison that I use for menus and tools leaving almost the whole 24 area available for the image. I know it may sound strange, as it did for me in some other reviews, but it really is nice having those extra pixels. 1200 vs 1080. I havent tried watching widescreen movies or anything on it so I cant speak to that formatting but for photo editing, web browsing or just any other general use its really great to have that real estate. The colors on the monitor were awesome right out of the box and I havent needed to do any adjustments or calibrations. The viewing angle on the IPS is awesome. I catch myself still moving my head around (to adjust for various brightness levels from different viewing angles on my old macbook pro) while editing only to find that I dont need to anymore. The flexibility of the monitor is great and easy to change and adjust. The USB port on the side is convenient. Editing on this display is so much more pleasurable than my old MacBook Pro 17. I can tell this is going to be a productive relationship.

Purchased this to pair with a Late 2013 15 MacBook Pro Retina. I chose this monitor, as opposed to the U2414H, because it has a DVI connector and I didnt want to deal with the Mac thinking it was a TV, which has been reported with other monitors that only support HDMI or DisplayPort. I was able to plug this Dell into my MiniDisplayPort to DVI Apple adapter without issue and the Mac recognized the full resolution right away. The model number is U2412M rev. A01 manufactured in June 1014. Many have reported problems with a yellow tint to this monitor and they found it to be unacceptable. I was afraid that I might also be one of those people. When compared with the MacBook Retina screen (which is much higher quality) the Dell did seem to have a yellow tint. I tried to use the Apple color calibration tools and the settings on the display to correct it, but I could never find the right adjustments to get it to look right. I thought I might have to return it and try my luck with a different panel, but I was able to find a color profile on http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc_profiles.htm that worked very well. I am not sure that it completely eliminated the yellow tint, but it did pull the display colors more in line with the Retina panel and that was really all I was looking for. It looks great now and I dont notice a yellow tint anymore. I am not a photo or graphic artist so I am not hung up on calibration per say, but I dont want to be distracted by stark color differences when starring at both screens. The ICC profile did the trick for me. So far... I am a happy owner.

Previous to this I had run a pair of Dell 2005FPW / 2007FPW S-IPS monitors because I do amateur photography and some design work. Color shift and accuracy matters more than response for me, even though I do game sometimes. The Dell 2005 was dying, losing its sync until warm ....So I went off to find a new monitor. I really wanted a 24 this time vs a direct replacement for the 20.1. But I was worried that e-IPS was fine for most, but not someone who often returns monitors... ME. My 2007FPW works fine.. but after 5 years the CFL back-light is unable to reach the 120 luminance setting I use when calibrating.. besides that it is working well and I have been happy with Dell Monitors. Next year the other monitor will get replaced.. but not sure what size. So After reading all the great reviews and the few bad reviews.. I decided to go for it on the Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24 My concerns going in were: > LED Backlite being too blue > Coating being differing / worse than what I was used to > Viewing Angles being less than S-IPS I got it set up today.... WOW!! I love the larger screen area... The controls are easy to use and the labels on the screen that come up make adjusting it in the dark easy.. Even before I got it calibrated there were some things I noticed. The color was good and it didnt suffer from the intense blue tints some of the first LED backlit screens did which made me avoid them for years. I like the anti-reflective coating. If I put my face closer than 18 inches from the monitor I can see it, just like on my previous two monitors and then only on a white screen. I dont see it when working at my normal distance which my eyes are tuned for. (only distance I dont need glasses) I use a Pantone i1Display to calibrate my monitors.. It calibrated perfectly... and am thrilled I wish the old monitor was as bright... but both are now color-temp and contrast calibrated to almost match. As you see I gave it 5 Stars.. Here are the low points, (Note that on a $290 24inch IPS monitor these NITS are not worth more than a half star and I am rounding up. >E-IPS vs S-IPS Side to Side in landscape mode I see the same viewing angle. If I stand and look down, I see the new 24 dim faster than the older S-IPS so the top to bottom viewing angle is not quite as good. I probably wouldnt run ii in Portrait mode because of that. But I havent tried.. When I do I will update the review. >When Calibrating the monitor the contrast, brightness and RGB settings were a bit coarser than I would like. This means that while my eye couldnt see a shift in brightness or contrast.. the calibration sensor would jump from just below perfect to just above prefect on the sensed levels. But I got it where I wanted and the calibtation curve as good as any Monitor I have owned. Thats it so far. If you cant deal with the screen coating or sit the right distance from the screen and are used to clear screens.. I can see why some people might not like this.. But I have a Window and or a TV behind me in the office.. the Anti-reflective coating is a godsend.. I have NO reflections even from intense sources of light behind me. For Photographers and Designers looking for a good monitor on a budget, that can be calibrated this is a solid choice I have nor problem reccomending.(Though at this price is not able to display a full Adobe RGB Gamut.) Dell saved some money by dropping HDMI ( so did my HP notebook which also has display port) If neded the adapters are a couple bucks. A non-issue. But the image quality is top notch. And great for this use.

I waited a couple months to allow me to make an honest evaluation of this unit. I can honestly say that after a great deal of research on competitive monitors, I am very satisfied with my DELL U2412M. My unit was a refurbished unit that arrived well-packaged and exactly as described (Excellent condition). I could find no external or cosmetic problems on the unit. The one minor disappointment I had was that it did not come with a DVI cable. The U2412M was very easy to set up and easy to operate. Once installed, I typically leave it on and simply let it go into sleep mode when my computer is off. One of the most important features of the monitor was the way graphics and text looked and on this one, both are excellent. (I tried a less expensive Dell unit before the U2412M and the color was all wrong even to my untrained eyes.) I have not attempted to perform a full calibration of the monitor yet as for now it looks fine for my daily use (mostly office work and video games), but I may look into calibrating the unit later. One thing prospective buyers should be aware of is that this monitor is very bright! As others have noted in the reviews, you should expect to turn this monitors brightness way down if you expect to use it for any amount of time. I think I have mine cranked down to about 40% at the moment and that still seems bright at times. The controls on the U2412M are a little tricky to get used to as they are on the lower right corner of the screen. This means they are out of the way (which is both a plus and a minus on my setup). It is sometimes awkward to manipulate the buttons on the bezel edge and I find myself tempted to push the screen based arrows (but as this screen is not touch-sensitive, that doesnt do anything). Other than that minor thing to get used to, I could not be more satisfied with the monitor, so far. My last monitor (an Acer X214W) lasted nearly 4 years and I am hoping this Dell U2412M will last me at least that long. If I had it to do over, I would still buy one of these again and recommend the U2412M to others looking for a reasonably priced monitor with great performance.

As a long-time techie, Ive had a problem with Dell since their inception. Bad service, bad products, everything you wouldnt want in a company. Ive always avoided their products over the years. So it pains me to say that these monitors are top notch. The manufacture date is Sept 2012, not some random month last year. Initial product launch was early last year, so I was hesitant of getting something that has been sitting in a warehouse for almost two years. Five stars to the seller for this. The reviews here are what swayed me (that and Dell uses the same panels as other big names like Sony/Samsung, etc.), so I figured...the resolution is what I wanted, the price point is what I wanted, and looking at unrelated Dell products, the reviews have gotten a lot better, so I went for it. Crisp, clear, no dead pixels, they look fine out of the box compared to my two 24 Samsungs that Ive calibrated. Ill still have to go over the settings, just like any other monitor. Bezels are clean and slim. Solid construction throughout. Packed well. I bought two, and mounted them on a dual monitor stand I picked up [...] (5 stars to this product too, by the way) These monitors are for programming, so the 8ms G2G is not a concern. No photo/video editing, no games. _________________ Update 2/16/2013: I bought these last November, and Ive had them on 24/7 (with sleep mode). Every day I look forward to working on the computer with these monitors. They are just fantastic. Im adding a user-photo to show them installed.

After shopping for a new monitor, this is my third that Ive ordered from different places, second of this model. Finally! Ive found something I can keep. The model I received from amazon is in 96% perfect condition. Stable base (which was actually why I had to return the previous model), no backlight bleeding, the monitor is very bright, so I have the brightness turned down to 30 or so, which is great. The IPS viewing angles are fantastic compared to other IPS displays Ive seen. The only problem is that when I have totally black screens, like end credits or something, there is the slightest vertical streak on far right side of the screen. its very thin, less than 4mm across, and the pixels are good, just slightly slightly greyed out? I never actually see this error unless its a totally black screen. Also, its so far to the right, Im never really looking over there. 24 is a pretty big screen! Other than that, its perfect. No issues in my 4 days of ownership. Oh, but I would advise to just go to the Dell site to get the drivers for the monitor, the disk didnt find the monitor when I put it in. Downloading the drivers works perfectly.

Very sturdy monitor with well designed stand. In the era of cheap shiny plastics that belong in a discotheque this monitor has a nice, professional matte finish, plastics on this monitor simply have a better look and feel, you immediately understand why you paid more for this monitor. Now I would like to comment on this occasionally mentioned here yellow tint problem. First of all majority of monitors have some tint one way or another - a perfect white may exist only on a printed white paper. My iMacs screen doesnt give me a perfect white either. Second I would not call it yellow, it is more like an ivory. Third the monitor comes with the Standard pre-set mode, if you select some other available mode from the menu say Game or Movie the tint becomes even more white. You can also play directly with the colour temperature setting and make your tint for example blue if this is your fancy. In other words this yellow tint issue is in my opinion a phony problem that stems from ignorance. And playing with settings in this monitor is super easy, no manual needed, I was doing it within few seconds of unpacking, it is so intuitive. Having said all of the above I do allow for a possibility that some of those who reported this yellow tint might have indeed got a defective unit. The Dell Ultrasharp series are my favorite monitors. I currently own 4 Dell UltraSharps. Most / all are typically IPS based (in plane switching) and offer the best viewing angles and clarity. The U2412M is currently my primary monitor. I own one that I purchased about 3 years ago directly from Dell. I decided to replace my secondary monitor (which is a Dell U2311H) with another U2412M which I purchased from Amazon. Out of the box the monitor looked great. The antiglare coating on this latest revision is not as aggressive as the older version I currently own. Colors and text look more vibrant and clearer. The one problem I had (which is mentioned quite often in the reviews here) is a slight yellow cast on the whites. I purchased a hardware calibration tool (ColorMunki Display) specifically to calibrate the new monitor. Even after calibration, I could not get rid of the yellow cast. Unfortunately that meant sending it back. I wished it didnt have that problem since I really like the new revision (mainly due to the lighter antiglare coating). I will be on the lookout for a good price on the newer U2415 model.
