HTC Vive XR Elite Virtual Reality Headset + Controllers

> 3 dayThe valve index had set a very high bar, years before the quest 2 ever cam to market. Based on the quality valve is known for and numerous early reviews, I was expecting an exceptional headset when I preordered this one. I already own a quest 1, quest 2 and pico 4, so Im very familiar with vr. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The headset wasnt comfortable at all. I couldnt get a very good light seal around the face cushion. The cushion itself seemed very flimsy and had a tendency to fall off if I grabbed it the wrong way. The battery pack that attaches to the back, like the pico 4 , is a great way to balance everything. However, unlike the pico, the back doesnt pivot at all. This means you have to loosen the back every time, which is inconvenient. This might have been manageable, but the only way to keep the headset on when I moved around was to tighten it excessively so that my face bit into the face cushion and it stayed on the back of my head. (This gave me headaches after 15-20 minutes of using it.) Visually, its not very impressive either. While it does look better than my quest 2, it doesnt look better than the pico 4. Also, the field of view seemed smaller, sort of like I was looking through binoculars. I tried playing Pop One and found myself having to look around a lot more, because my peripheral vision was almost non existent. Lastly, the controllers seem like a step backward. The body of controllers are straight bulky sticks, without any effort made to help them conform to your hand and be comfortable. The controllers on the quest 2 and pico 4 both feel comfortable in my hands. The xr elites did not. Both the quest 2 and the pico 4 are better headsets than this at a lesser price.

> 3 dayI did not purchase through Amazon but thought Id leave a review here anyway. Ive been using it for a few days, so here are my early thoughts. First of all, the hardware. The headset is very tiny and lightweight - especially without the battery attached. Its significantly smaller than the Focus 3, Quest 2, Quest Pro, Vive Pro, etc. I love that you can hot-swap the battery out, and the headset is able to power itself for at least a few minutes. The fan is incredibly loud and distracting, even louder than the Vive Focus 3 fan, and it runs loud even when there are no apps open. In comparison, the Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro are nearly silent. The balance is good with the battery attached, actually the battery half weighs more than the headset half so the balance is a bit back-weighted. There is some pressure on the nose bridge and the stock face mask does not fit my face perfectly, a common complaint. Some light is leaking in from the sides which causes glare, ugh. I like the stepless toggle on the bottom of the headset to adjust IPD while using the headset, though it feels a bit unrefined. Surprisingly it stays on my face quite well in glasses mode. My complaint with glasses mode is that the headset needs to be powered via a powerbank or wall outlet. I would prefer to use a single tethered connection from the headset to a PCVR setup. AFAIK, there are no PCs with 30w power delivery which this headset requires to stay powered. HTC needs to sell a USB desktop accessory that provides tethered connection over USB as well as power via an AC adapter, similar to the dongle youd use with something like a Vive Pro. Im using this device on a special wifi network which cannot take advantage of the wireless PCVR connection, so please let me just use this as a normal tethered headset in glasses mode! I dont want to wear the battery while Im tethered! I also hate that I now have to install yet another buggy HTC program, Vive Streaming Hub, to stream PVCR. It seems nearly identical to Vive Business Streaming, but that program isnt compatible with the Vive XR Elite. The controllers are the same as from the Focus 3. Theyre fine, but not great. They feel unbalanced with a lot of weight in the bottom where the battery is. They plug in via USB-C. For some reason, HTC included a single USB-C to USB-C charging cable for the headset, and two USB-C to USB-A cables to charge the controllers. And no power brick or anything. Who was responsible for THAT decision? Okay, onto the standalone software. It feels about five or six years behind Meta OS. Its baaaad. Its not like Metas software is free from bugs either - plus theyre still running on Android 10 as of V50 - but it works so much better than this does. If youre familiar with the Focus 3 menu, this is basically the same. Any time I move outside of the boundary, I need to set it up from scratch, and that really annoying ladys voice comes on explaining each step of the process. Its like, I do this ten times a day, please stop introducing me to this process. Hand tracking is okay. Controller tracking is good. But both feel significantly behind Meta. I dont feel like I can trust the passthrough. Unlike the Quest Pro, which is pretty reliable with running the passthrough image at all times when not in an app, the Vive XR Elite is often just a black screen with the logo/loading screen. When you step outside of the boundary with the passthrough running, the passthrough image actually gets DARKER as part of the warning that youve left the boundary. This is stupidly unsafe. Another part of the problem using this device with mixed reality is that the stock face mask is fully immersive. HTC has previewed another face mask which is completely open and rests the headsets weight on a pad on your forehead, but for some reason that isnt included with your purchase. By comparison, the Meta Quest Pro comes with magnetic side blinders, and even with them installed you get a lot of peripheral light coming in from the bottom. Combined with a reliable passthrough, this helps keep your sense of place in the real world. I feel completely untrusting of the XR Elite to provide a similar experience. The passthrough image itself is pretty good. Its noticeably higher resolution to me than the softer-looking Quest Pro, especially at a distance of 2-10 feet. It appears to only use the single color camera for the passthrough image, while the Quest Pro uses an overlay of the color image on top of the four other cameras, which gives it more depth perception but also some weird b&w artifacts) There is a very strong sharpening filter applied to the passthrough image which in some senses does help with smaller details but is also kind of nauseating. I havent measured the FOV or looked at the specs but it feels a little narrower than the Quest Pro to me, and much better than the Quest 2 and Focus 3. Even for PCVR, I would be hard-pressed to recommend this device over the Meta Quest Pro, especially now that the Pro has dropped in price. The Quest Pro provides twice as much storage, face and eye tracking, a wireless charging pad, much better controllers, a much more stable OS, and a better app library/store. If youre coming from previous HTC headset, and/or you desperately want to avoid Metas ecosystem (I dont blame you), youll probably be okay with this. But the software, on both the PC and headset sides, is significantly more frustrating to deal with than it was in the past. The only silver lining is that the hardware is mostly okay, and software issues have the potential to be ironed out in the coming months. This could be a 4/5 product but the software/OS experience leaves it at a 2.

> 3 dayI purchased my XR Elite via the HTC Vive store, but Im so disappointed in it that I felt a warning on Amazon was warranted. Its impressive when you first pull it out of the box, but any possibility of a good review had vanished after using the headset for less than 10 minutes. Im a Vive fanboy... I own the original Vive and the Vive Elite Cosmos and LOVE them both, but I can only assume those engineers came nowhere near the XR Elite. For reference, my SteamVR streaming rig is a relatively high-end 3080TI with a WiFi 6E router... I have no issues running the most demanding VR games at high detail on my Cosmos Elite. Good -The diopter adjustment is great -HMD is impressively small and light weight Bad -AIO software might as well be nonexistent for whats offered -PC streaming is mostly a stuttering low-rez mess and when it does work and very few SteamVR games provide bindings for the XR controllers -Uncomfortable in every configuration... glasses mode pinches your skull to literally headache inducing levels and battery mode squashes your face when you wear it tight enough not to wiggle -Terrible internal reflected light bloom in the pancake lens assemblies... bright graphics wash out the entire display -Field of view is one of the worst Ive experienced with no ability to move the lens closer to your eyes -Controllers feel like a cheap Dollar Store knockoffs -Face gasket is made of a fabric material and is already dirty and deforming in addition to constantly coming detached from the headset at the slightest bump -A ridiculous piece of cheap elastic is included as a securing head strap HTC should be embarrassed by the XR Elite and ashamed of themselves for the price point. My shame is in not retuning it immediately... now I can only hope that active improvements to the software and 3rd party accessories can save it from a dusty death at the bottom of a drawer.

> 3 dayNot sure about the histrionics of the current reviews, this is not a push the boundaries headset but is is the most versatile out there at the moment and capable. There is much to refine but I am pleased with the XR Elite and encouraged that many issues I have read from others have been sorted as I had absolutely no issues with streaming PCVR wired, mirroring phone(Samsung S22+), Immersed worked flawlessly, store is adding titles So it is always important to preface what I was looking for here in a VR headset. I am not telling you the headset is better than any other, that is always going to come down to your desired usage. For me, I already have an Index and Reverb G2 and firmly entrenched in PCVR. No interest in console and after those headsets couldnt downgrade visual and sound quality to consider Q2. QP was too uncomfortable and awkward for me, better visuals than Q2 but l wasnt impressed for the money, I was looking for a headset that could fit the following: PCVR wired PCVR wireless Mobile Mirroring VR Standalone VR Compact for Travel/Flight Movie Watching VR workspace in a pinch that was Viable Viable Passthrough That said the XR Elite was the closest from my estimation that fit the bill for me. Since I was entrenched in PCVR the Facebook Meta library is a non factor for me and I have no doubt the library will fill for HTC. For some critical categories for me: Comfort: It is light and once dialed in more comfortable than either of my other headsets but it took some effort to dial it in. While not horrible for me, expect third party face gaskets will improve this. I do find the full headset with pack much more comfortable. The glasses arms are not long enough for me and, while tolerable, is not comfortable. Also, the arms should rotate a bit to allow you to adjust the fit to your face better, especially in glasses mode. Visual Clarity: As expected it is not as good as the Reverb G2 though not far off, but much better than index. For my eyes, noticeably better than the Q2, and on par with QP though to my eyes XR is touch more clear. The one thing I did notice is light bleed of white text on dark backgrounds, this has been mentioned by others and can be bad in some cases. FOV: Seems roughly the same as QP, better than Q2, and definitely less than the G2 and Index, but honestly given the ease of use, lightness, and connection and overall performance with comparable (G2) or better visuals (Index) I feel for casual/social gaming use it will likely be my daily driver despite less FOV. To get more clarity/resolution with large FOV it will require ridiculous hardware (like a $1.5-2k 4090) to run it so dont expect affordable rigs anytime soon. No scuba mask effect for me that others have suggested. Sound: It is better than I expected here. Coming from Index and G2 it is no where near that but definitely better to my ears than Q2 and QP. I did notice that at lower to mid volumes it sounds pretty decent but at higher volumes you start to notice an imbalance with bass lacking. I was able to use BT headphones (Nuratrue Pros) to watch movies with no sync issues, worked beautifully. I have not tried it with games yet though. If there were sync issues, I wonder if BT 5.3 would help, dont know enough here to speak to this...maybe someone out there has more insight. For those complaining about no headphone jack, there is a very simple solution, a USB C to 3.5mm Headphone and Charger Adapter ($14). This allows you to provide power (up to 60w) and plug in wired headphones in either glasses or with the battery cradle mode. So ignore the whining on that! Passthrough: This was a bit more disappointing, clearer than any other but still not workable. If you look at a screen with text that has white background from a distance looks just white until you move it very close to the headset. Additionally everything looks oddly flat...depth sensor is still not enabled so we will see how it is in future. Resolution is still not great but passthrough is better than any I have tried to date. Hand Tracking: Work in progress. It is workable with some gnashing of teeth along the way. Also mostly available for menus and mirroring, not for many games at moment. The menu mouthing worked great for me, the pinching to click/select often selected when I didnt pinch. Likely due to angle of camera to my hand so may take some learning on my part. So how did XR Elite fare in each of my uses above? PCVR Wired: Downloaded the vive streaming app to PC, plugged in and up came my steam home and away I went into my library. Demeo, Walkabout Minigolf, Alex and others all worked without issue or hitch. PCVR Wireless: I did not get to try this properly, leaving for a trip, but was able to actually connect and start to play Walkabout with my PC wireless and the headset wireless on heavily shared wifi 5 but did get choppy quickly. If I wired the PC to router expect this would have resolved this so very promising, sorry cant offer more here. Mobile Mirroring: For me this was easy to set up, download the manage, connected to same wifi, selected mirroring and it paired and just worked with my Samsung S22+. It was clear and responsive with no issues. In landscape it really crunches your view and portrait seems unusually tall and thin but overall workable and watching movies was great in a non-noisy environment. Standalone VR: Worked great, visuals were better than I expected, but did not do much more that immersed, Cosmic Flow, and some other free options as leaving for a trip so didnt have much time. Others will undoubtedly be able to provide further insight here. PCVR is my main use so not as vital for me. Travel/ Flight Movies: Used a MS Surface with streaming cable and worked just spectacularly. Cant tell you how good this experience was especially with BT headphones...dont bother with just headset speakers on a plane or other noisy environment as even at full volume you could barely hear the movie. Also, movies via phone mirroring was not smooth, to stuttery/lurchy, though sound with BT was good too. Virtual Workspaces: Used Immerse for this and it is workable for sure. Will not be as efficient as working with multiple screens in IRL yet to me but still investigating. Need to figure out if can do virtual screens in passthrough to use actual keyboard and mouse and simply have screens fixed in your space. The resolution is not quite as sharp as I would like but working on the road it is definitely a viable option and could work for hours if I can sort out using actual mouse and keyboard. Passthrough: Discussed above, helpful but hope it improves with enabling of the depth sensor. Resolution while better than any I have tried to date is still not great. If AR is your thing there are better options. There it is, hope it is helpful to some out there considering this headset. This headset is not breaking any new ground in terms of FOV and resolution. For me this is the only one that ticked all the boxes for me to play my PCVR library but also be useful for Travel and have standalone with phone mirroring (compatible phones only). HTC achieved a good balance with this headset and for someone new to VR who travels for work this will be the best option out there at the moment in my opinion. Hopefully they can improve on the glasses mode with longer arms and for future versions adjustable arms at the headset connection to allow for a better fit and placement of in built speaker to your ears. I am looking forward to seeing how the software improves seeing they are actively addressing many of issues people who had it early have reported.

> 3 dayCons: 1. If your network isnt being broadcasted, theres no way to add to the hidden network from the Vive Manager app. So you have to join whatever broadcasting/visible network that you see then sign up the headset then go into the virtual dashboard to Connectivity to add the hidden network 2. Small sweet spot 3. Fan in headset is noticeable 4. Glare from the lenses and halo effect (or light bleeding) around the edges 5. IPD says 72 but only goes to 69.55 6. Grainy passthrough 7. First impressions of the hand tracking isnt that good. It works but you most definitely need the controllers nearby 8. Despite following the steps of this video, I have difficulties getting the headset to see the PC connection. After almost a hour of working on this, I gave up. I will try again tomorrow but Im more than likely returning the headset when I had high hopes for this as a glasses wearer and original HTC Vive owner. Pros: 1. Form factor: lightweight, compact, balanced 2. Good audio: crisp 3. No glasses needed

> 3 dayI wanted a standalone VR that can handle PCVR gaming (too lazy to deal with basestations), and the XR Elite delivered exactly that. Wireless PC streaming is a bit choppy, but thats highly dependent on the quality of the wifi network. A proper review will have to wait until I connect to a router thats less shared (I have 4 other housemates). The wired streaming experience, however, is solid. I downloaded the vive streaming app and set everything up without much issue.

> 3 dayI have to say I’ve been pleasantly surprised with this headset so far. It really is as small and light as you would expect, and I don’t get a headache wearing it like I do with other headsets. The hand tracking is fun, but I’ve found I like using the controllers more. Biggest thing for me though is the passthrough. I thought I didn’t care about AR, but it’s really neat being able to look around your room and make drawings, sculpt objects, whatever. Now I just gotta decide what other games to get for it.

> 3 dayDude...dont buy this unless you are strictly using it for PCVR. Half the apps dont work. The controllers bug out. The lens are glary . There is practically zero games. No refund policy for games. Oh yeah you heard me right. No refund (meta lets you refund anything as long as you havent played it over 2 hours) and the fan is crazy loud. This thing feels very underdeveloped. We got scammed man

Greater than one weekIm pretty mad - the USB streaming was buggy and unreliable - Ive tried 4 different USB cables - and Im on the official one now - and its not able to work with the exact same everything that worked 2 days ago. I wish I could return it, but alas, its been more than 30 days - but the product simply does not work - as the other reviews also cover. Dont buy it.
