IRWIN Bottoming Tap, #6-48NS (1221)

The IRWIN Bottoming Tap, #6-48NS (1221) is just what the gunsmith ordered. Save yourself a bit if hassle and get the one that comes with the correct drill bit.

This tap has the common thread pitch for shotgun sights and is very difficult to find in stores; if not impossible. I have a Remington 870 express magnum shotgun which has the front ball sight pressed in; not threaded. After removing the ball sight, I used this tap to begin threading the hole. The hole is very shallow though, so once the tap hits the bottom, I had to dremel off the tapered bottom so I could continue tapping the threads all the way down to the bottom of the hole. For the price, the one time use didnt bother me : )

A good quality tap, does the job effectively. But, the bottoming taps Im used to are completely flat at the end with the cutting edges all the way to the end, this is not. This is more like a plug tap than a bottoming tap. Still works, but be aware of that.

Probably due to my own inexperience with using items like this but the tap would constantly slip from the handle I was using, warped and then finally snapped. Part of the tap I suppose is forever in my rifle now which is unfortunate.

It did what it supposed to do on my savage 12fv. Needs to be lubricated to push excess metal pieces. 4 stars cuz of 2 days late delivery.

Worked perfect....for those that dont know use your drill press manually to thread your hole right after you drill it..once you reach how far you want unchuck the tap and back it outby hand to make sure you feel that it threaded good and comes out with ease. I bought three taps afraid they would break but using above method kept that from happening. Will probably rust away before I ever get to second one.

Seems well made, but did not use, since appeared would have enlarged threads for Savage 12 FV scope bases too much, and ended up not even having to chase threads in order to mount Warne 7666-20MOA picatinny rail.

This was a six-pack of taps, but I only needed one of them to tap eight 6-48 holes for two receiver-mounted picatinny rails. Worked great, I have no complaints, and have zero hesitation recommending this product for those who need one. Good Luck!

Hard size to find 6-48 Needed a bottom tap to clean up some holes on a gun barrel for mounting a scope. Worked perfect!
