On my recent 5800X build (running PBO and curve optimizer, nothing fancy) I tried out a relatively nice 360mm AIO with push/pull fans (so 6 fans in total) and then one of these. Performance (Cinebench scores and max temps during runs) was so close as to be indistinguishable between the two, and Ive been testing the Noctua during the recent west coast heat wave, so make of that what you will. All other things being equal, air has obvious advantages, and I wont be swapping the AIO back in.

Used to cool a Ryzen 7 3700X with PBO enabled. Manages to keep the CPU around 80 degrees while running Prime95 at 80% fan speed and around 66 while gaming with fans at 50%. The Ryzen Zen2 CPUs are known to be a little hotter than usual so as much as 80 sounds high, this only occurs during a synthetic load benchmark. For reference, 3* 120mm case fans are all running around 850RPM to keep my PC as silent as possible at all times so theres not a huge amount of fresh air getting into the case.

I bought this to replace my 9-year-old NH-D15 (of which both fans are still running great) for a new build with Ryzen 3800X. Its a more compact size and takes up a lot less space, and although I cant make an apples-apples comparison, I think it is very close to the larger D15 in performance. It does have light, even machining lines on the contact plate. No idea if they affect performance or if they are there by design. Pricy for a cooler but they will last a very long time.

I could have gone with the Chrome version, to make the PC more attractive. This giant brown cooler keeps my CPU nice and cool. I was about to buy a water cooler AIO, but the tests show this cooler can keep the PC as cool as water cooling. You cant even hear it while the computer is under load. Well packaged and arrived on time.

My computer runs from 32 to about 54 . Very cool. Unbelievable cooler.

What can I say? Cooling fans are not exactly a fashion accessory, but they are important. I jumped straight to the dual-fan cooler this time around, and I was not disappointed, This fan is working great, and my PC stays well within the range it should. I would happily buy one of these again.

This CPU cooler is replacing a different tower cooler. Both that old one and the NH-U12A are around the same size, and their fans spin at the same rpm. In spite of this I noticed a substantial temperature drop of 5°C in the extreme stress testing software prime95. The temperature drop is smaller under most realistic use cases, but this still gave me enhanced stability with my overclock.

NH-U12A HeaderNH-U12A Header

The NH-U12A is the latest, 5th generation of Noctua’s NH-U12 series of 120mm size premium-quality quiet CPU coolers. Conceived to push the envelope of the 120mm form factor, it combines two of Noctua’s flagship model NF-A12x25 PWM 120mm fans with a completely redesigned heatsink featuring 7 heatpipes and an increased fin surface area for superior heat dissipation. This way, the NH-U12A can rival the performance of many 140mm size coolers while offering 120mm class case and PCIe compatibility. Topped off with the trusted, pro-grade SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system and Noctua’s proven NT-H1 thermal compound, the NH-U12A is a deluxe choice that combines top-tier performance with excellent compatibility and outstanding quietness of operation.

NT-H1NT-H1

Classic 120mm tower size for excellent overall compatibility

Standing 158mm tall, the NH-U12A is short enough to fit most modern mid- or high-end tower cases. Measuring 125mm wide (including fan and fan clips), the cooler stays clear of the top PCIe slot on most standard ATX or Micro-ATX motherboards, ensuring optimum compatibility with multi-GPU setups.

100% RAM compatibility on LGA1700/1200 and AM4/AM5

Due to its asymmetric design, the NH-U12A does not overhang the RAM slots on Intel LGA1700 (LGA17xx family)/LGA1200/LGA115x and AMD AM4/AM5 based motherboards, which ensures easy access to the modules and 100% compatibility with tall heat-spreaders. On LGA2066, the rear fan will overhang the RAM slots on the left-hand side of the socket, so RAM modules should not exceed 42mm in height.*

Dual NF-A12 120mm fans

The NF-A12x25 is a highly optimised next-generation 120mm fan that integrates Noctua’s latest innovations in aerodynamic engineering in order to achieve an unprecedented level of quiet cooling performance. Using this elite-class fan in a push/pull dual fan configuration is one of the cornerstones of the NH-U12A’s commanding performance and acoustic efficiency.

NT-H1 thermal compound

Noctua’s much-acclaimed NT-H1 is a pro-grade TIM solution that provides minimum thermal resistance, excellent ease of use and outstanding reliability. Chosen again and again by overclockers and enthusiast users worldwide, it has established itself as a benchmark for premium-quality thermal compounds.
