I am only in the last three months getting into some of the newer Euro games. In our house, we have Dominion and Carcassone: Hunters and Gatherers and I have played Ticket to Ride a number of times at the local game store on board game night. It seemed like a good idea to branch out a bit, and I had heard about the Gipf project on that game geek website. So, I took a chance and bought it. Yes, you can play it online, but it is definitely more fun to play it live with another human. The game is an abstract strategy game like Chess or Go. Since I have never played any Gipf games before the game seemed odd at the start, but took only about 15 minutes to Grok the rules. The game plays quickly -- usually a single game lasts less than twenty minutes; so, in that sense, the game is more fun, at least in my opinion that Chess or Go. However, how one develops a strategy for this game is still a mystery to me. Because the markers get flipped or change colors every time a player jumps over them with a ring, it is very difficult to anticipate the future. Overall, I find the game to be fun and fast paced. It makes for a very nice two-player game. Bought this at a local game store -- trying to support small businesses and the local economy -- although I paid full retail plus sales tax that I would not have paid if I had bought the game from amazon.

Wonderful abstract game! If you thought checkers was fun as a kid, but now is boring and chess is intriguing but isnt worth the lifestyle commitment to get good, Yinsh is for you. This has enough twists and changes in fate and things to pay attention to that the game remains very interesting. The rivalry with my wife has gotten pretty humorous and intense. As a side note, the box for this game is way bigger than it needs to be. If you want to conserve space and dont care about the box, you can get by without it since theres a bag for all the pieces other than the board.

This is an excellent game. As with most games the more you play the better you get. This game becomes more complex each time you play with a chess like strategy system but not so complex that playing with a young gamer is impossible. Another reiviewer wrote something like this is my wife and Is just one more game game. Well I couldnt agree more. Its not overly long so you can get in a 3 round set before bed. I have since purchased several for gifts because we enjoyed it so much.

First game I bought in this game series. Super easy to learn but a great challenge to play. Lots of fun and keeps the mind woking!

Bought this for my 11 year old granddaughter who loves board games. She has played it with her dad and says she really likes it. I’m happy.

Without a doubt this is my favorite two-player abstract strategy game. It is a mix of Pente and Othello, but that really makes it sound too simple. It really is simple to learn, but it will take time to learn strategies. It takes 5 to 10 games to really appreciate the nuances of the game and after that it will be a game that you will never get rid of or avoid playing. You have to get 3 five in a rows to win and as you get a 5 in a row then you take your power pieces off the board along with your 5 pieces. This mechanic makes you weaker as you win. It is really hard to put into words how this works and why it is so great. The component quality is very good. If you are a fan of two-player abstract games then you do yourself a disservice by not picking this up. I HIGHLY recommend this game. Edit: It appears this game is out of print. It is still awesome, but dont pay too much for it. There are tons of other great strategy games available. I have heard that this game will get reprinted. So it should be back to a reasonable price be this fall or Christmas time.

I love all these gipf games...I have zertz ....tzaar...and dvonn too...these are great abstract strategy games...I dont like mindless games like monopoly where you just roll dice and dont think...I like games where you think ahead 4 or 5 moves

This game is definitely better than Checkers! Ive played at least 30 matches and would play more if I could get others to play it with me more often. Pieces are quality, but they come in plastic bags that cant be resealed. I put the pieces in cloth bags instead. It adds a little character to the feel of the game. No complaints. 5 of 5.

This game is fabulous; my boys are already realizing how to strategize in this game (as am I). You will not be disappointed - this is the new chess/othello/checkers/chinese checkers game of the future! This game will keep you on your toes and will give hours of enjoyable head scratching play!
