This three prong receptacle tester is easy to insert and remove from an outlet, has easy to read LED indicators and looks like it rugged enough to handle being in my toolbox. The only downside would be the sticker (what each LED combination indicates). I dont think the sticker will hold up unless I put a piece of clear tape over it or perhaps spray it with a coat of clear paint. Otherwise, i really like the tester.

I needed an extra receptacle tester because I always misplace mine. This one works, and does what it should and so I am giving it 5 stars. One thing it lacks, which I didnt notice before ordering is a gfci tester button. You can get one that includes this feature from other name brands for a lower price. Ill keep this one in my toolbox but probably order one that has the gfci button.

I have no baseline for various faults in my outlets. It seems to light up when you plug it in, but I am not sure about the accuracy. It is also a bit flimsy for tighter outlets and I’m concerned it will break.

It pains me to have to rate this socket tester low. Socket testers like these have been around for quite a while. There are major brands that produce these with the full pedigree of safety and certification. The circuit inside is not that complicated and anyone technically minded can copy it on their own. What makes a difference is when a manufacturer builds with a rugged case, the ability to test GFCI receptacles for proper wiring, and, most importantly, takes the extra step to get certification for safety from the UL or equivalent. Look, if youre interested in a socket tester like this, it means you want to know that wiring was done correctly and safely. So you also want to know your tester was independently tested and certified that it was built well, and built for safety. A tool to test for safety should itself be shown to be safe, right? This hasnt. Its not like we dont have alternatives. Rugged, effective, safe, and more complete (with a GFCI test button) socket testers are readily available from major brands like Klein Tools right here at Amazon, and for less cost. When this review was written (April 2023) this less featured, uncertified for safety socket tester for 25% more expensive than the Klein Tools tester. This doesnt seem right. I cant bring myself to recommend this socket tester to you. I did try it, my wiring is proper and it confirmed that, but I dont know what this tester will do when wiring is improper, either now or over time. I still cant believe this tester doesnt have UL certification, but that seems to be the case. If I find differently Ill up date this review, so come back and have a look. But for now it seems better to pass this one up. Why 2-stars instead of one star? Because this socket tester seems about as rugged as the competition, and it did work just like the competition on my known-good wiring, so its not a total write-off. One last note: you are reading a Vine review, which means this product was sent to me without my having to pay for it. I never believed Vine reviews, I felt people would say anything to get free stuff. The Vine program, at least for me, is a little different: I only get what I go out of my way to ask for, and everything I get is reported as income to me, so Ill have to pay income taxes at what will probably be reported as list price. I recently bought a Klein Tools socket tester, I even made use of its GFCI test button, I misplaced it, and I wanted another. Then I saw this socket tester was available for review. The price listed was higher than for a Klein, it was less featured than a Klein, and it doesnt seem like it ever was passed by the UL as a safe device to use. Hopefully, youll learn from my experience and youll check to see what other options you have.

This tester is a must have for any homeowner. Dont rely solely on a NCV tester when dealing with outlets. This will let you know at a glance if your outlet has power and whether its wired correctly. This is as basic as you can get for an outlet tester but most of the time thats all you need. It doesnt have a GFCI test rip button (although it will test a GFCI outlet just fine). Ive had one of these in my toolbox for many years. Recently the ground prong broke loose so it was time to get a new one. This one did the trick.

Are the electrical outlets in your home wired correctly and safely? How would you know? Its possible for them to still work, but, not be correct and safe. With this tool, it is easy and the work of seconds to confirm that all the wiring is as it should be. Simply plug this into the outlet and look at which lights turn on - theres a straightforward explanation right on the tool of what they mean, what you want to see, and whats wrong if you see something else. This way, you dont have to trust your contractor or electrician to not make a mistake and wire things backwards - you can know for sure that the polarization is correct and grounding is safe, without you having to open up the outlets or touch any wires yourself. Every homeowner should have one of these. The body of the tester is hard plastic, so, unless you drive over it with your car, itll probably outlast you. Recommended!

Its a down and dirty little outlet tester. It does the job at a great price. I am happy with the purchase.

What it wont do is tell you why there isnt power to an outlet other than bad connections or grounding. I guess I need a miracle or an electrician to track down the issue.

This very handy tool does an excellent job at indicating whats what with electrical plugs. I am so glad that I found it, as it saved my bacon when I used it to make sure a socket was cold that I thought I had flipped the breaker on so I could change it, only to find, after plugging this grand device in, that the plug was still hot. Whew!
