I read several old reviews here of the 505A-12 - and its smaller 7 sibling - and became nervous about the suggested lack of accuracy due to poor decal placement. So I contacted Starrett to verify if - as their web site claimed - the scales are now laser engraved and dont still employ simple decals. They assured me that the laser engraving was an enhancement implemented a few years back, and expressed frustration that Amazon reviews never expire due to age and this has lead to much confusion about their products.

Overall, a very good product. Easy to use and easy to read scales. Would be better if one of the legs was offset so that both legs would sit flat to the surface during use rather than having to keep pressure on the one leg to keep tool from rocking over.

This is a great product. I just recently purchased a house built in the 1950s, and have began remodeling already. Needless to say houses built in the 50s are more square and plumb that todays creations. However, this little tool came in quite handy for making sure the angle cuts were perfect for all the new molding. I tend to be a perfectionist and this tool made my job much easier. No need to caulk your joints now. I highly recommend this product to anyone doing finish carpentery work.

Not accurate. 45 and 90 degrees do not match up one way, but do the other. I have no confidence in the accuracy of this item. Wish I had never bought it. The concept is good but not followed through on this item.

My husband is a do it yourselfer and is very excited to use this protactor, he was not able to always mitre a corner to fit well but this instrument should help with that.

This is a fine tool if you are doing alot of miter work. I do door and window casing, crown molding, cabinet installs and stair handrails. This tool will give you the edge to cut perfect inside and outside miters on walls that are not flat or square. Since most miter saw gauges only give you common miter settings in 5 degree increments this tool will let you accurately set your chop saw in one or two degree increments such as cutting stair handrails and pickets at 37 degrees. Where is that number on my chop saw gauge? Your chop saw must be setup accurately for this tool to work. Making test cuts on scrap is still the best way to check the accuracy of your miter.

Knowing this product was a hit or miss purchase I took a chance and ordered it. Mine arrived quickly and did not have the mismatched angle scales which pleagued others. As for engraved lines, I really cant tell for sure, but overall Im happy especially considering the price went up significantly after I made my purchase.
