The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is really an extraordinary superhero movie although these heroes arent from comic books but the books of great literature. A hunter, a scientist, a vampire, an invisible man, an immortal, a spy, and a beast -- the imndomitable Alan Quatermain from of H. Rider Haggards 1885 novel King Solomons Mines; Mina Harker from Bram Strokers immortal vampire book Dracula; Captain Nemo from Jules Vernes 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea; the sleek and sinister Dorian Gray from Oscar Wildes the Picture of Dorian Gray; Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde comes from Robert Louis Stevensons short novel Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; a grown-up Tom Sawyer, called Agent Sawyer, from Mark Twains various novels; and the thief Rodney Skinner standing in for H. G. Wells Invisible Man-- are all treated as real people who lived, worked, fought, and even died around the turn of twentieth century and that all of the adventures written about them werent fiction, but just the events that made up the days of their lives. And here they fight a villainous master-mind who is trying to start a world war just to make profits for himself. I dont know why, but at first, I did not not like this movie. But then I watched it again for a second time and found that despite a certain grimness to the sets that represent 19th century London and Paris, this is a great action/adventure film to rival any James Bond or X-Man movie. It was the kind of a movie that made wished I had read the books all of those heroes-- and the surprise villain-- came from. I think that in spite of the violence, and there is a lot of it, this might be a very good movie for parents to watch with their older kids and point out to them that the great works of literature can be just as exciting as any comic book or video game and get them started on reading just for the pleasure of reading.

I saw this movie years ago and I remember it being hammered by critics, but as a kid I thought it was the coolest thing ever. And even now, I still love this movie. Im fairly certain that if this had released now in this era of superhero movies, it would have been a huge hit. Even now the effect, both practical and CGI, hold up really well. Its an interesting story, with great characters. A fun adventure throughout.

Yes, just okay. Despite the good cast, led by S. Connery, it just attains an okay. There was a lot of potential but not realized. Just goes to show that gimmickry does not make a movie. Actually, by the end the gimmickry had gotten extremely tiresome. Watch it for Connery if youre a fan, but dont expect greatness.

Lots of good actors, but they arent given much scope for their talents. Lots of explosions and shooting, plenty of noise. But its a bit tedious to watch. Leaves you time to think about things like why does Tom Sawyer wear suspenders hanging down from his waist? Why wear them at all if you arent going to use them? Why do steampunk women always have their bosoms pushed up so it looks like they are serving them on a tray? Why did they show the Nautilus as big as a cruise ship in one scene, then show them sailing it right into a canal in Venice in another scene, much smaller?

Sean Connery is great. This movie has it all; good actors, good story, history, intrigue, drama, Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde, Dracula, Journey to the center of the earth, the invisible man, world war, sherlock holmes and moriarty, tints of iron man and wonder woman, ... and its pretty clean when you think of the lack of profanity, gore and nudity. great soundtrack. Really, its one of the better and definitely underrated movies of the last decade.

I truly dont understand all the hate for this film... I thoroughly enjoyed it... marvelous action, sfx and storyline bringing classic heroes and villains from some of the best literature and all the actors were at peak performance... maybe it was too cerebral for some or maybe the distribution just dropped the ball... regardless, to me, this is a dont miss and after at least a half dozen viewings, it holds well... right up there with several other undeservedly panned wonderful films like other real favorites... Mystery Men, the Rocketeer, Disneys Atlantis and Treasure Planet and John Carter of Mars... I think the critics blew it, Im sure Ill be watching again
