Western Digital 8TB WD Red Plus NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD - 7200 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, CMR, 256 MB Cache, 3.5 - WD80EFBX

This drive was to be an archive to move files from older hard drives to this one. This drive just failed on 9/11/2021. It performs endless spinning and clicking whenever it is powered up now.

WD Red HDD are great, this was not an issue with the product itself, but packaging and shipping ! This HDD drive was sent just in the shielding envelope and an Amazon bag. It had obvious signs of impact on all the corners including holes in the shielding envelope. I did not even open to install: everyone with IT background knows you do not throw HDDs around, it needed the original box with end padding and bubble wrap ! I ordered a replacement.

Avoid this seller like the plague. They sold me a 8TB HDD in a none OEM static free bag, with the HDD label on the outside of the bag. The Serial number did not have a valid Western Digital Warranty. I have bought unknown amounts of WD HDDs through Amazon, and this is unacceptable. This worthless item was returned. Shame on you Seller!

I have close to 100 hard drives. 90% are WD, the others are Seagate. The few failures have been well outside the warranty window, so I havent had the pleasure of dealing with WD on a drive that failed under warranty. Recently, I had an 8TB Red drive fail. I checked WDs site and found that the warranty had a couple months remaining. I doubled-checked a couple more times before I finally contacted WD. When I gave them the serial number, they said the warranty expired 5 months ago. What? I told them I had checked several times and got a different result. I then checked their online system again that day and it said the warranty expired 5 months ago! So, by contacting their warranty support, the expiration magically changed back several months. Unfortunately, I hadnt printed the page so I couldnt prove that it moved. When I buy a drive, I usually check the serial number with WDs warranty checker to verify that the drive is valid for sale in the USA and that the warranty is still valid. I then write the warranty expiration date on the drive itself. I do NOT register the drives with WD because their registration procedure is not pleasant. Another suggestion, if youre buying WD drives from Amazon, make sure it says Sold by and Shipped by Amazon. Dont take a chance on 3rd party sales because WD may not honor the warranty from some sellers. They may send you back to the original seller for the warranty replacement (OEM drives) or tell you that the drive was not valid for sale in the USA so there is no warranty at all in the USA. Im not slamming all 3rd party sellers on Amazon, but for HDDs (and USB thumb drives) there are just too many fly-by-night sellers out there and its just too risky. Buy WD hard drives direct from Amazon (or direct from WD). Just my $.02. Bottom line: As long as you dont ever need any support from WD and dont mind their deceptive marketing (i.e., the way they slipped SMR drives into the Red lineup), these drives run cool, are relatively quiet, are mostly reliable and are competitively priced. I usually avoid Seagate drives because my prior experience with them is they run hotter and are slightly noisier but maybe its time to re-visit Ironwolf drives since WD really doesnt care about their customers.

Have an older model (WD80EFZX) of the same capacity for more than 3 years of almost 24/7 use. No problems. Purchased this to add extra storage space. Packaging is excellent. Did a surface error scan after installation to check for bad sectors and if the drive is faulty (took about 12-16 hours which is normal for this size) and so far been working fine. Will update again if there are problems with this.

Needed to upgrade from my 3TB Western Digital Red (WD30EFRX) that was quite long in the tooth and getting full. Used Acronis to clone the drive and transfer roughly 3TB of data. Hottest it got during that 6 hour period was 51°C. Average normal use is 43°C so does not run hot at all despite being in the lower chamber of my Fractal Design Define C case with no direct air cooling. Completely silent even during intense writing and reading. Someone else noted screw holes not being standard but I did not find this at all on the 8TB model. Has all standard screw holes, two on each side and 6 on the bottom.

Reasonable cost for this 8TB drive, and its nice and fast. Item was well packed for shipment, and delivery was quick.

Arrived on time, exactly what I needed. WIll buy from this company again.

This WD Red Plus 8TB HDD (bought used-acceptable from Amazon Warehouse) is fine, although it seems to run hotter than other WD Red drives; it is within range at 100-104 (F). However, all 7 of my other WD Red Plus drives all run at about 90-100 (F). I have purchased 4 new WD Red hard drives on Amazon, and another 4 used from Amazon Warehouse. All were 12-14TB, except for one 8TB HDD. The drives all live in Synology desktop NAS boxes. No issues with the new drives. But, I will probably be returning one 14TB HDD, bc it had 5500+ hours on it. While this is within Amazon Warehouse terms, there was no need to keep it, as the other used drives had only 50, 300, & 400 hrs on them. No drives had bad sectors (although one drive had 15 failed reconnect attempts; reconnects are not good, but I kept it bc the reconnects have not occurred during my ownership). I am a happy with the WD Red drives, just make sure not to get the SMR drives, which WD is guilty as charged. The used drives from Amazon Warehouse are a really great purchase.

If you are storing your media for home theater this is beyond what you need. Excellent read/write speeds even under a semi heavy user load. I will be buying more of these
