For what it is it works fine I just am not sure if it makes to big of a difference for my gaming experience. To start with, it’s not the most straightforward device. There are four separate components that need to be all connected and it must be plugged in to a power source to function. It has two display options, native 4:3 aspect ratio and 16:9 widescreen. There is a switch on the side to toggle between the two settings. I tested the display both with and without the device and found that it did not upscale the graphics all that much. In the 16:9 setting it does get pretty blurry but it at least does fill the screen. The sound did not initially work in 4:3 setting. Toggled to 16:9 and it worked, and then kept working when switched back to 4:3. Overall this will help run an N64, Super Nintendo or Game cube through hdmi ports but probably only worth it if your tv only has hdmi.

Theres a lot of classic gaming converters on the market these days, and most of them use RGB to HDMI conversion so you get cleaner signal than the horrible composite that these consoles output back in the day full of blown out colors, crushed blacks, and color bleed. Mileage is going to vary but essentially... This converter outputs a decent signal (less distortion than composite) but darker than the composite signal you are probably used to. You may want to adjust your image to increase the brightness (I wish a cable like this on the market would auto-bright picture to compensate). You can switch between 4:3 and 16:8 aspect ratio for the old and new aspect ratios. There does not appear to be upscaling as the image was small on my projector. No matter, I just zoomed it to full screen and it looks great. Given that, make sure your TV can upscale low resolution (I believe N64 was 480i signal) images without problems. Cartridge based consoles like SNES and N64 tend to have signal drop-out when a cartridge fails to load and also often when simply booting, so when HDMI (which works on signal detect) is used with this old tech I expect to need to reset HDMI switches and cables a few times to get a game to show up. That said, I was able to do so without much hassle and once a game DOES boot signal is consistently good. The first game I tried had no signal so I disconnected the cable and reseated the cartridge a few times and then it came right up. The second game I tried did the same thing and then gave me picture with no sound. pulled and reconnected the cable then everything came up fine. Im not sure what other peoples experience will be with converting a signal this old to HDMI, but it looks plenty good to my eyes. I like a slightly soft image and thats what I got here. I wish it was a brighter image but until we get a new console that plays N64 cartridges in a higher resolution it doesnt get much better than this unless you LIKE super-sharp low resolution images (the horrible aliasing looks awful to me without some softening). I like this cable. If you like your image sharper and brighter prepare to spend a LOT more money. If you like your image soft and dont mind it being dim give this a try.

Plugging in the micro usb is a bit inconvenient but works like a charm when the AV plug in isn’t an option.

I had difficulty with getting this to work with an AV receiver with pass through to the TV. Its DOES work directly connected to the TV with sound coming over the TV speakers rather than av receiver. Its only stereo sound anyway. Sometimes I have no sound, usually from a cold start when the TV and n64 have both been off. I just toggle back and forth between inputs once the console is on and displays an image and after a few toggles with the remote between hdmi 1, 2, 3, etc when I return to the hdmi input this is on Ill get sound. Honestly this is tolerable. Its probably a quirk of the analog to digital chipset used. Picture quality is fine. 16:9 mode stretches things a bit but its not as bad as I thought itd be. I did notice after a few hours the plastic housing of little converter was surprisingly warm. To me this indicates the analog to digital converter chip was probably extremely warm given I could feel the heat through air and plastic. Out of curiosity I cut a hole in the case and applied a small heatsink (see photo) to the main chip. It provides no tangible benefit or upgrade to the function of the device. Its not like it makes to picture clearer or anything. It does seem to dissipate a lot of heat though so it provides peace of mind that this device wont burn out after a month. Cooler electronics last longer than hot electronics. Its not necessary to do this though. It doesnt seem to automatically turn off when the n64 is off, its still warm to the touch. So I just unplug it from the 5v micro usb power when not in use. Auto power off and on would be nice but its a small gripe Overall Im just happy to play n64 again, without needing to keep an old school crt TV around.

This thing does not work. I honestly get so sick of ordering small electronics from Amazon that are dead on arrival. I would pay more for something of quality. Time is most valuable thing and crap like this wastes it.

Been looking for something to convert my N64 RCA cable into something that I could play on my modern HDTV that has no RCA inputs and was hopeful this one would work. Tried multiple HDMI cables and micro usb cables but none seem to work in getting a signal from my N64 to my HDTV. My N64 still works on my parents old tv with RCA inputs so looks like my unit was defective.
