Compared to the HDX FPR5 filters that I had on hand and what is supposed to be the equivalent to MERV8, the filter material does not seem to be as thick nor are there as many ridges/pleats. I counted 2 less ridges/pleats on the MERV8 versus the FPR5 which means less filter material surface area. As long as you change your filters often enough I do not think that there will be much difference. As with all filters you have to take your HVAC system into consideration as a thicker, more restrictive filter could cause damage to your HVAC system .

Over the years I usually would forget about changing the filters for the furnace and A/C and let them go way too long. And then when I di change them I would use the cheapest ones I could find which are those mostly see-through ones that only have a few spun fibers to catch only the largest particles. Fortunately I decided a while ago that the air I was breathing should have more protection than those offered. But after doing some work on my furnace recently where the thermistor of the blower motor went bad and I had to remove the blower assembly I had a chance to look at the heat exchanger inside the furnace. It had a layer of dust and dirt that had accumulated completely covering the fins of the heat exchanger. Not only does this restrict air flow drastically and reduce the heating efficiency of your furnace but it is also a fire hazard. It took me quite a while to clean it all out using a vacuum and several types of brushes including toothbrushes. My point is that while you definitely want cleaner air for you to breathe but you need to protect your furnace too and avoid expensive repairs or worse. I got both MERV 8 and MERV 11 filters from BNX and they both will provide much cleaner air for both you and your furnace. They fit very well and I now have a supply on hand that should last me well over a year. They are a little more expensive than the cheaper models of filters but they do a much better job of filtering the air. Personally I would rather spend $7-8 a month for better air than take a chance on spending $1000-2000 or more to have an HVAC tech out to fix or replace a damaged heat exchanger.

I usually use two filters every month in this size at my house so I like to purchase in bulk. I never had this brand before but seems equal in quality and performance to the Filtrete filters I usually get, and the price is fair for an 11pack. Fits perfectly and works well.
