Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor, Black

Cutting to the Chase (Value vs product & purpose): I was upgrading from a Dell 20 16:10 ratio (1680x1050) 2007 LCD Monitor which had no actual problems with it, but I wanted more real-estate and a higher res image. I wanted colors, and was willing to pay for them, because I do do layouts and basic photo-editing from time to time, but I ultimately chose this over the 2413 and Im glad I pocketed the extra $200. For about $300, its a great buy and $50 cheaper than directly from Dell. I did some research in the way-back machine and it seems like I paid close to $500 7 years ago when I got my old 20, so paying 300 for a larger, higher res and more vibrant screen, is really quite a good deal... especially since 2007 dollars are about 50% + more valuable than our inflated monopoly money today. (Side lesson kids: so long as we print money, dont bother saving any in your mattress!) My work is Architecture, so added area for CAD or REVIT drafting is important- and 24 certainly feels like a lot to me. Most firms Ive worked at provide 20 screens. Ive used big 30 in apple screens, back when they had the clunky plastic frames. Frankly I feel like 24 is a nice compromise between size and working my neck muscles searching for the tool bars at the extremes of the screen. I also play games like Fallout3 and Bioshock Infinite, Civ franchise and SupCom, so I was worried about all this talk of lag (more later). The first thing my wife noticed when I plugged in the monitor was that the colors in the desktop background were more vibrant than the old monitor: three people had distinctly different lip and skin tones which didnt show nearly as clearly before. This is revealing, since when emursing myself in reviews for monitors, I started to feel like the 2412M would be a compromise.... Performance: Even from people who professed their love for the 2413, I kept reading about ghosting problems, about cyan color trails and input lag and gaming modes, and other things which sounded either REALLY irritating or complicated. I dont feel like flipping through settings menus to make an experience fluid feeling or good looking - I constantly flip back and forth between games, work, web browsing, or videos, and dont want to have to sort out the menu every time. I cant compare this model with another model because I only bought one of them! So heres a list of items about THIS monitor Ive found to be true in my experience: Q:Anti-Glare coating? A:It looks great. Supposedly its an advancement over the 2410, and not as good as the 2413. Well It is certainly an advancement over the 2007 I had, and way better than anything Ive been provided on the job. It looks smooth and clear to me, although it does not have the almost glossed look that the 2413 claims to have. Since I have to stare at the screen professionally for 8 hours a day, and then i come home and feel like playing a videogame or watching netflix for a few hours... this screen seems perfect, and I wouldnt want it any glossier. Q: Input Lag, or total lag, or transmission lag... that sort of thing? A: All kinds of fears about 6ms vs 8ms vs 1ms vs 2 ms got me really wound me up for NO REASON. Finally one of the reviews I read linked me to a reflex-reaction website, and I found that from click-to-click, although I could at times be quite fast, generally speaking, my fastest clicks could easily vary 10-20ms. So worrying about 2ms or a 6ms on-paper difference between this monitor and another monitor, even a TN fast gaming monitor, starts to seem really silly, at least to a non-pro gamer who isnt hopped up on a dozen energy drinks, who isnt nitrogen-cooling his CPU to eek out another dozen frames per-sec on his first person shooter. No noticeable response time problems here, which is why I suppose Ive heard that a lot of Gamers choose this monitor. Q: Color? A: Colors look great. It is supposed to cover most of the sRGB Gamut. I can tell you its a lot more vibrant than what Im used to. getting all wound up about color calibration is another thing most people just not need to worry about. I plug and play and havent had a problem. No weird color shifts here. The white looks white, the reds are red. Snozberries taste like Snozberries. Maybe the 2413 would have been all of my graphic dreams come true, but really I wouldnt have used it to its fullest, and unless your profession is colors, you probably wouldnt either. Read Fuzzy Wuzzys review for details about how in order to use the monitor to its fullest, you need to have an unbroken line of image processing from beginning to end optimized for that level of quality. Q: Backlight Bleed / glowing/ pixles? A: I dont see any bright light-leaks at the edges or anything, but when the screen is black, it isnt quite as black as Id like it. This is my first IPS monitor, and it seems like standard fare to have a bit of glowing, but its nothing I notice regularly. While gaming or web browsing or watching videos its something I dont notice at all. The pixles are fine, although I checked for dead pixles, I didnt find any. Q: Overall build quality/ customer service? A: Good, no defects, and I am sensitive since I once ordered a DELL laptop which came with a popped up piece of plastic trim. The monitor was Surprisingly light, although its larger than my old one. Seems sturdy. Not knocking it around or anything, so its not wobbling. The action for moving or rotating the monitor is very smooth and efficient. Aesthetically I like its clean lines. Well worth the value, no regrets. Cheers!

I had two 16:10 LG monitors and at 9 months one went south. LG quit making them so they are issuing a refund. LGs customer service to this point is excellent btw. So, I ended up here looking for another comparable monitor for my dual monitor setup. In the price range it boils down to this Dell model and an Asus. If you are looking at these you will know which Asus I am speaking of. I read and researched forever it seemed and came up with two options. One may be yellow and one may flicker. Wonderful choice. If you are in that position then possibly this will help you decide. One site called TFT Central does a good job of reviewing both monitors. Both get reasonable marks with the edge possibly going to the Dell. What caught my eye is the Asus uses PWM or Pulse Width Modulation to dim the monitor and Dell does not. PWM is essentially turning the backlight on and off faster then the eye can detect and to dim the monitor the LED stays off for a longer interval. Thats how I understand it. It is said that this could cause some eyestrain in some people while reading. It reminds me of the old interlaced low frequency monitors that indeed caused me much eye strain so one strike against the Asus because I read a lot. At full brightness the PWM does not engage so it wont matter but you cant look any of these monitors for very long on full brightness so you will most likely be looking at the PWM working. Once again it may not bother many but I did not want to chance that. The Asus has some USB3 ports that may or may not work. Its the may or may not part that makes me wonder why I should use that as a criteria at all. Then there is the Dell where some were getting a distinct yellow tint and that certainly bothered me. You would possibly get the yellow tint with a Dell monitor that has a A00 revision number as reported by some here on Amazon. The numbers seem to go backwards as you read the reviews causing some head scratching. It didnt make much sense. I found a blog talking about this very subject and a fellow named Chris from Dell answered the question at some point. The A0... number starts over at 00 if there is a hardware change. For anything else like the case, stand or software change they add another digit to the revision number. So, what you have to do is compare the revision number to the date of manufacture to be meaningful. The yellow monitors appeared to be manufactured in the later part of 2013 with a revision number of A00. So I took the chance on a yellow monitor and ordered the Dell about 3 weeks ago which would have been the later part of May 2014. I received one with a date of manufacture of March 2014 and a revision number of A01. To my satisfaction there was and is no yellow tint with the unit I received. So it would appear that the one I have has had a software or firmware update based on the revision number. The part that I still find confusing is what if they have another hardware update immediately after a A00 revision? Hmm. The color was really very good out of the box and the only adjustment I have made to date is to turn the brightness level down a little. Much to my surprise it matches the LG color as exact as I can tell. I see virtually no difference. I also have a reference because while I waited for the new Dell I had an older Dell 19 inch running next to the LG and there was a major difference in color that could not be adjusted out. Last but not least I find out that the Dell U2412M and the Asus both use the same panel made by LG so any difference should only be in the electronics, case and stand. The Dell stand is very nice and the case very slim. I find the menu easy to use. The mat coating on the screen is not an issue. It looks just fine on both of my monitors. Some here have complained about the Dell warranty. That may be an issue to consider. I think they all could take a lesson in customer service from LG. Those folks have it down. So this is how I decided. Hopefully it will help if you find yourself with the same dilemma, yellow or flicker.

Excited to get the new monitor I had it plugged in within the hour. Nicely stylish, and very sturdy I was sure I had made a good choice. I am a photographer and while on a budget I DO need something that is accurate that I can count on. This is my third IPS monitor and is replacing an excellent (expensive) 8 year old 16 X 10 24 HP that gave out. Here is how it fared. Turning it on I LOVED the extra real estate that a 16 X 10 monitor gives the viewer. I couldnt imagine editing photos with anything less. Viewing angles are great. When sitting at a dual monitor setup you are never really lined up to be square with either monitor. The wide viewing angles offered by IPS are fantastic. Plenty of ports on the back and side for anything you are doing. I just use the DVI so I didnt test anything else. Convenient control placement. But, I noticed (side by side) that the colors did not match my other smaller IPS monitor (LG). Not even close. The LG took a little tweaking to get it right so I began to set it up. The LG was close out of the box, in fact, all I had to do was turn down the brightness. Not so the Dell. The colors were all slightly off out of the box. First of all it comes too bright... this is common and a simple test to achieve the proper brightness is to peer at a gradient and adjust till it you see the differences between black blacks and white whites. You can accomplish this by visiting any number of sites or by using the Windows excellent Advanced Color Management tool in control panel. Once that was done I still had colors that were off and dull compared to what I was used to. Plugging in a Spyder 3 finally did the trick. It took the Spyder about 5 minutes and the screen colors matched (very close at least). Colors are bright and seem to be accurate. When something is printed at the lab I use it is right on so.... Here is the conclusion. While much better than any tn monitor it still falls short of the full IPS experience that I had from my previous IPS monitor (I assume that much of this is caused by the 6 bit panel instead of 8 bit). It will have to do for now as I cannot afford the $1000 replacement cost of the previous monitor. It is sturdy and built well. Controls are well thought out and easy to navigate. Lots of connectivity. All things that add to its value. Is it worth its price, absolutely. Does it it rate 5 stars unfortunately not. PROS 16 X 10 Native format (lots of extra real estate from a 16 X 9) Lots of ports- 1 DVI-D with HDCP, 1 DisplayPort 1 VGA,1 USB upstream port 4 USB downstream ports, Dell Sound bar Budget priced for an IPS Great wide viewing angles Accurate colors once calibrated CONS Factory Settings without hardware calibration are going to be disappointing. 6 bit color not 8 bit so to achieve 8 bit color it needs to dither. (I knew this before I ordered but if you didnt...) only standard RGB gamut not wide gamut. Even then falls a little short of the full RGB spectrum

I must have purchased six or seven of these exact same monitors over the past couple of years. I cant remember when I bought the first one, but I remember thinking that it was SO much better than regular 1080 HD. The extra pixels really make a difference (this monitor is 1920x1200 versus a standard HD monitors 1920x1080 pixels). In my last job, I had two of these monitors side by side along with my laptop screen. When I quit, I purchased one of these to go in my new office, and will be buying a second soon. I have bought these for employees, too, and they all love them. The monitor has several inputs, such as HDMI, VGA and DVI. It has a USB hub, and comes with the USB cable to connect to your computer. This is pretty convenient - I have my wireless keyboard and mouse plugged into the monitor, along with an external hard drive and other accessories. When I get to the office I just have to plug in one USB cable and Im done. Ive even thought about getting a USB audio adapter so I dont have to plug and unplug my speakers -- I know, Im lazy. The image quality on the monitor is good too. Not that Id really be able to tell, Im practically blind. But blacks look black, and it gets pretty bright too. I just use it for email, programming, web browsing and taking the occasional phone order from a customer, so it does what I need. It will also pivot to 90 degrees too, my old boss used that a lot for editing spreadsheets and documents. I tried it with both one and two of these monitors, and I didnt really care for it. But its a great option to have if you want it. Bottom line, these monitors are awesome. And since they keep coming down in price year after year, they become more and more of a value. Ive paid almost $400 for these and they go for as little as $230 now. Keep your eye out for a deal, they go on sale all the time! Highly recommended.

Excellent display as many customers and reviewers said. However if you plan to use this monitor from a VGA connection, I suggest you use a digital connection. If your computer only have a HDMI port rather than a DVI port, I strongly suggest you include a DVI-HDMI cable in your order. Analog signals are more susceptible to electromagnetic interference than digital signals. When the monitor was connected to my laptop via VGA, the monitor suffered from strong ground loop interference. Both the monitor and my laptops power cable have a grounding pin, and they were plugged into the same power supply alone without any other connections. The VGA and power cords Dell supplied are insufficiently shielded, and a pair of 8 year old VGA and power cords were stronger. When the monitor was connected to my laptop and the laptop power is plugged in, the monitor suffered from severe interference which made the monitor flicker with horizontal lines and was impossible to use. The interference stopped when I unplugged the laptops power cord. After experimenting with all the spare VGA cords and power cords I have, the 2nd best solution was using an 8 year old VGA cable that had ferrite beads twice the size as the VGA cable Dell provided. Also, an old power cord was much thicker than the one Dell provided, and when using it the electromagnetic interference was noticeably reduced when using Dells VGA cable (I tested with a weaker VGA cable so it is easier to prove the difference in power cords). Many people probably dont have spare VGA and power cords laying around. So if you dont have a DVI or display port on your computer, the best solution is to add a DVI-HDMI to your order and qualify for free shipping. You can get it afterwards, but non-Amazon Prime members will be disadvantaged because $7 < $25.

I purchased two of these. One of them had a stuck pixel cluster and a pea sized bright spot near the center of the screen. I returned that one and the replacement arrived with two dark pixel clusters. On any background but a black background the dark pixel clusters look like the monitor is dirty or has a smudge....tried to clean the screen multiple times but the dark spots are still there. Evidently Dell doesnt consider it an issue unless you have 6 or more of these spots but an ultrasharp monitor should be better than this. I can understand one bad monitor but now the replacement has issues too. Very annoying. The 2nd of the first two I purchased doesnt have any issues. Other than the pixel cluster issue the colors are great and the monitors perform as expected. UPDATE: After more research the dark spots on the replacement monitor are actually smudges/fingerprints/dust etc. between the layers of the monitor. That is why it looks like a smudge but you cant clean it. It is behind the top layer. This has to be a quality control issue during assembly. Pros: Great color and excellent picture Cons: Quality control issues/stuck pixels/smudges between layers My Settings: I have used both the standard and color temp control. My favorite settings are the color temp mode set to 5700K, brightness at 35 and contrast at 75. I have also used the same brightness and contrast with the standard preset mode and like that too. The brightness comes set at 75 which is way too high in my opinion. Great color reproduction and no eye strain with these settings. I did find the 6500K color temp setting too red for some colors and that is why I settled on the 5700K.

Ive been trying to find a new monitor for some time now. I tried 27 monitors but in every case there was a problem with them - color desaturation, glass chips, LED bleeding, dead pixels, stuck pixels, defective ports, etc. Maybe I have terrible luck but is it so much to ask that a monitor actually fully work out of the box? Apparently so - I gave up on 27 monitors and turned to 24 monitors. Even in that range I had a real issue finding one that I liked (including other Dells) - until I came across this monitor. This is how monitors should be: sharp, clear, colorful, responsive, and with no defects. I liked this monitor so much I ended up getting three of them (and none of them had any problems). The picture is excellent and the colors are perfect. I havent noticed any ghosting when gaming and the viewing angle is great. The ONLY thing bad I have to say about the monitor is its lack of connections. Oh sure, it has DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort but I would have liked to have seen a second DVI port and/or an HDMI port (I hook in a Windows box and a Mac Mini). A very minor complaint, though. PROS: *Great Picture/Color/Response. *Everything worked! No dead pixels, no stuck pixels, no damage, no marks, no LED bleeding, no desaturation, great lighting and color balance - this was true on all three monitors. *Good menu system. *Excellent adjustable stand. *1920x1200 resolution is nice, 16:10 makes a huge difference. CONS: *Connections - would have been nice to have a second DVI port or an HDMI port; minor complaint though. This is easily one of the best monitors Ive ever seen, now if only there was a 27 version. I highly recommend it.

I was hemming and hawing back and forth between the U2412M and the U2410, its older brother. Im an amateur photographer and do a lot of post-production work in Lightroom and my old 2007WFP Dell 20 monitors werent cutting it in terms of display area. The 24s bring so much to the table and I love 16:10... Ill never go 16:9 as long as its an option. In the end, the insane cost difference to step up to the u2410 was just too much... even though it offers a wider gamut (which is really not something most people will notice, except perhaps in cases of professional print work) and some additional ports, it just wasnt worth it for me. (And I had heard rumors of weird pink/green issues on earlier models of the u2410 that scared me a bit). I will warn this: the u2412ms DEFINITELY REQUIRED CALIBRATING, especially if you want to use two side-by-side. I borrowed a friends Eye One Display calibrator to get them VERY close to each other... the available profiles online did nothing but blow out detail and low-end greys. The calibrated monitors are MUCH better and nearly imperceptibly off on whites. (The calibrator was 5+ years old, I think one of the newer ones would fare better.) These displays are also insanely low temperature. The 2007/2009WFPs which I have and use at work put out a fair amount of heat, but the u2412m uses half the power even at full blast and even after several hours, its very difficult to find any place along the back of the panel thats emanating heat in any measurable sense. This is great if you live in Arizona like me and already have plenty of heat to contend with during the summers. Over all, I couldnt be happier with these. (Except, perhaps, if they were pre-calibrated, but thats what the u2410 offers over the 2412.) Theyre a fantastic size, theyre amazing for gaming, photo finishing, video, and everything in between. I havent seen any ghosting or streaking or even any burn in or anything like that and the build quality of these displays is just great.

I am a professional photographer and look at 100s images a week. My previous Samsung burned out and I needed a monitor for clear and and good resolution but at a budget price. I looked and after reading the reviews of monitors, the Dell 2412 certainly surpassed all the others out there in the below $300 price range. I received the monitor ( even sooner than Amazon estimated...Thanks Amazon) opened it and had it up and running in under 30 minutes. It came right up and looked great right out of the box. I did calibrate it later as it did need some tweaking but nothing dramatic.The GUI is well positioned, very easy and logical to use. The stand I think is certainly strong enough and it rotates, extends, and tilts very nicely. Found no bad pixels and the 1980X1200 is extremely nice compared to the 1980X1080. Overall I am VERY Satisfied. I gave it a 4 vs. 5 star because it had no hdmi input or 3.0 USBs. Actually very minor but just thought it should have had a hdmi for an IPS panel. The DVI output is just as good as an hdmi unless you need sound or you have a much larger display. Read a few complaints about the stand, bad pixels, too bright, poorly made, unattractive material used for the matte screen causing an unpleasant look.................but IMHO this is an excellent monitor for the price and I experienced none of shortfalls others have mentioned. I am running Vista and this review was written after only 3 days of use.

I have two of these. One I bought from Dell. The other from Amazon 3 years after buying the first one. The first one is revision A03 and the new one is revision A01. It has the yellowish tint that people are complaining about in various places online. They are sitting side by side and its fairly noticeable. The thing is I dont know if I like the blueish tint of the A03 or the yellowish tint of the new A01... Im not too sure what to do. But know that it seems fairly consistent that all the current crop of Dell U2412M monitors have a slight yellow tint to things that are supposed to appear white. Its hard to fix this with any of the settings Ive tried so far. UPDATE: Ive decided to keep the second one with the yellowish tint because Ive found some pretty easy settings to make the color pretty closely match my the older A01 version I have. Go into the color part of the monitors menu system and set it up to have custom color, and then adjust the Red and Green settings each to 93, leave Blue at 100. Then set Brightness to 95 and Contrast to 70. This has done it for me. The two versions I have of this monitor are now close enough in color that Im going to keep the new one from Amazon. The yellowish tint is enough of a tint that its visible even if you dont have two of these monitors like I do. Ah, if all my problems were this bad I would be living a truly divine life.
