A good actress but a creepy movie

Interesting story line that got into complex trauma and PTSD reactions. I found it very interesting and watched it twice.

Isabelle Huppert was outstanding. All the acting was excellent. On the surface, the plot seems straightforward enough, but it is not. The psychological profiles of the lead actress (Huppert) and the rapist were extremely complicated. to say the least. All of this is my opinion of course, but the character of Elle did not appeal to me. She was a mix of both masochist and sadist stemming from a hideous childhood trauma. The rapist was just that; a violent rapist who beat his victims. I dont know if the Director was trying to get a romantic spin on rape or not (I hope not), but Ill just keep to my opinion that they were two of the worse people I would never like to meet.

Great thing about this movie and what makes it so refreshing is that it does not feel like it was written by a committee. The Hollywood movies Im talking about are those with cookie-cutter scripts and feel like either PSAs or anti-PSAs and feel like youve seen dozens like them already. This is the story of how a super-smart woman deals successfully and unconventionally with misfortune

This was a magnificently paced and darkly woven tale! Fantastic female lead actress- not difficult to see why she is a legend. I gave a lot of unsolicited advice to the characters as I was watching the film. A home security system would have wrecked the whole plot. It is not for the faint of heart with the home invasion(s), physical altercations etc. However, the entire film will cleverly bring up timely and charged topics from the news and struggles of todays world.

Well...life is complicated...especially if youre French. But I actually kind of liked it in a perverse sort of way. Interesting story with a strong female lead.

*****Spoilers****** I had to see this because the reviews are so varied. I found it to be an okay film. I think many people missed the point - it is not really about the rape, (which is shocking, and chews up the scenery a lot). This is about a woman traumatized early in life by her father whom she hates. The rapist has some screwed up religious ideologies, and the victim, (Isabelle Huppert - whose true victimization was at the hands of her father as a young child) has a screwed up need to feel punished. This last part comes out as the film progresses - not that I would ever say that a woman would want to be victimized in the way Elle is in the opening scene, but she clearly seeks out a continuation of the violence as the movie progresses. It is difficult to watch, and I had to fast forward through the attack scenes, but I believe Ive solved the puzzle of this film - at least in my mind. What motivated Elle - she was motivated by hatred of her father, and a self hatred that she spread around generously.
