These have served multiple purposes. First, we are using one on a hot-water recirculation pump that was originally plugged directly into a wall outlet. We didnt want it to run all the time, just for a few minutes before taking a shower, so now we can control it from a smart phone inside the house rather than going out to the garage to plug in then unplug it. (I know that any smart plug could do this, but Ill say that the Kasa has been reliable in maintaining an internet connection and the Kasa app is really easy to use. I dont see a need for Alexa or another program since all of our smart pugs are Kasa brand so far.) Second, we enrolled on OhmConnect, which offers small rewards (one example of which was one of these smart plugs, which is how I learned about them before deciding to buy more) for using less energy during peak electricity generation hours. That saves my utility company from having to buy the most expensive power and I think it reduces use of less environmentally friendly options, like burning coal. Pretty much a win-win. We let OhmConnect control our Kasa outlets for brief periods of peak electricity use (usually one hour at a time, early evening), meaning that they can turn them off for those periods. This works great for our fridge and freezer, which are fine being off for such short periods. If we had other big energy drawing appliances that could be shut off during the hours chosen by OhmConnect, wed buy more. It is minimal hassle while contributing to the greater good. The worst that has happened has been to open the fridge during the shut-off period and find the light is off, but fridges lose very little of their coolness in as short a time as an hour. Probably more than you wanted to know, but hoping to offer some education about this program. (Im sure there is more than one like it offered and it has to be offered by your utility company. OhmConnect happens to be what our utility company partnered with.)

While you can find ‘cheaper’ or ‘smaller’ smart plugs you must remember that half the beauty of it is if it & its company / app / features are, well, smart. It’s pointless to get a cheaper or smaller one just to end up constantly stressed from set-up trials to its apps functionality. This one is affordable AND the company is reliable in the quality of there products which is why I give this 4.5 Stars because it is one of the best smart plugs out there for this good of a price ( I’ll get to why not 5 in a moment ) For example as some others have said, with We-Mo you had to scan the plugs to use them which is extremely difficult when something is plugged in behind furniture or in my case ( as I am 5’1 … and a quarter - hey every little bit counts ! ) but Kasa was easy to set up and even easier to use ! I love that it has the sense feature - that is a HUGE plus for this price and this kind of solid company. As is the ability to set an an On as well as an Off timer in case you forget, and you can set it in a few different ways such as with the sun rise or set and with a set schedule on the app. Works seamlessly. Only issue is what others have sad about the reality of it’s energy saving power and how what it actually uses being way more than what it claims. But overall like I said at the start, it is worth paying a few extra dollars to not have your blood pressure and sanity tested by more difficult and time consuming ( ironic as they are suppose to be time and energy- both it’s and my own energy saving ) products when this Kasa one is a huge jump in quality and reliability. So go for it !

I use these with my lamps and Alexa. Easy to set up.. just download app, plug in, hit pair button. Then just add as a skill on Alexa, in your Alexa app and viola you are in business. Love these.

Only wish I had found these sooner. Purchased when I saw the name TP-Link who is behind this Kasa brand apparently. TP-Link is renowned for making top tier wifi devices. After taking the one minute to set these up with the instructions in box, these things can reconnect back to my wifi after being unplugged within seconds of being put back in. (I use a starlink router so results may vary). My best devices struggle to do that. Connectivity is absolute top tier. On to the performance aspect, youll want to download the Kasa app on your phone and do a quick setup. There are certain premade settings and theres also a sort of programming (much easier than the real thing) you can do to personalize the function of whatever you have plugged in. Want your coffee machine to turn on to start brewing a batch for you before work? No problem. Want a lightbulb to turn on a bit before your alarm as a sunrise alarm? Sure, just add it into the Scene with the coffee maker and make it even easier. Or go ahead and buy one of their cheap Kasa color changing lightbulbs and pick your sunrise color while your at it. With one click you can have your entire back porch and yard set up to entertain guests, no hunting for power buttons or light switches. Tons of possibilities, all yours to choose. The biggest problems with smart devices these days is they all want to do their own thing, with their own firmware, constant fighting for internet usage, and seemingly needing to be reset endlessly just to stay connected. There should be a standard, and Ill let mine be Kasa.

Bought these for use with Home Assistant. Installation and configuration was a breeze. No problems with dropped connections or inconsistent performance, they just work. I like that you can control the status LED so I can turn them off on the ones in bedrooms so theres no unnecessary light in the room. Form factor is perfect, easily fit two of them in one outlet if needed. Given my wifi network is starting to get full, the next time I need smart plugs Ill go with Matter / Thread plugs since theyre powered and can be full thread nodes to extend / reinforce your Thread network.

Finally getting on the smart home stuff, after resisting for a long time. I hate how fragmented all of it is and that there are separate apps for every brands stuff. I dont want to use a bunch of different apps, and you never know how long companies will support these things. Lifespans of LED bulbs are very long, and plugs like this could last decades. But, if the company stops supporting them theyll become paperweights. However, I have a set a JBL LSR305mkII studio monitors I use on my desk for guitar-playing, music recording, and general listening. These have switches on the back. With these plugs I can control them without having to reach behind and thats great! Because they also make affordable bulbs I was able to add those to my network without the need for a separate app. The app works pretty well, too. Others have confirmed that these will work without contacting TP-Links servers, including blocking traffic to them over the internet after you set them up. So, that means there may be potential to keep using them after TP-Link drops support in favor of newer devices in the future. The setup could be confusing if youre not very tech savvy. If you use any kind of VPN on your phone, it might not work. I had to disable mine to do the setup. Afterward, I could re-enable the VPN and use it without issue. At one point in the setup you need to connect to temporary wifi network broadcast by the bulb, this isnt the clearest in the directions. The only negative I can see here is that TP-Link hasnt come out and said theyll support Matter once thats released. However, it should be doable since these use 2.4ghz wifi.

I tried these in my garage which is located about 100 feet from my house and the signal seemed to be ok. They worked and functioned with no issues (slight hiccup with Alexa) but I ended up returning them because I didnt like that the lighted power button is located on the side of the plug. It makes it very hard to tell if the plug is on or off unless you are standing to the side of the outlet and plug. Other than that issue they seemed pretty good.

The product worked great for a wide variety of audiences. It integrates with Google Home/Assistant nicely, in addition to the native Kasa app. Theres also a pretty active community supporting the development of 3rd party integrations such as python and command line interfaces. After 8 months or so, one of my plug started to malfunction and couldnt be turned off. Despite the 1-year warranty claim, TP-Link actually asked the customer to pay of the cost of shipping the defective product back to them. That makes very little sense and basically renders the warranty claim useless. Update: After contacting customer support, I was offered a free shipping label.
