The operative thing in using this device safely is to always test it first on a circuit known to be live. The reason is that it is battery operated and if the batteries are weak or arent making a good internal connection to the device, you may not get a reading. That said this tester is much better than the one I had previously from a different manufacture, which had a press-on cap that would often come loose when trying to switch the unit on. On this one, the cap screws on and the switch is a momentary contact pushbutton making it much more reliable. Because it is dual range, read the directions carefully. I copied the instruction chart to keep with the unit because I dont use it often.

Very easy to use. I watched some YouTube videos on How to use them first. They Both were helpful to find the problem of two non-working receptacles. The pen gives you visual and /or audible signals. The Plug lights up and the light pattern displayed shows you what the problem is.
