Kohler Genuine Part Gp1059291 Canister Seal - Pack 2

> 3 dayTo the best of my ability to determine, I did receive a genuine pair of replacement seals in their original packaging. I used one to replace a leaking seal in my toilet, which looked like peppermint candy left outside in the snow all winter. The toilet now does not leak, which is pretty much what Im looking for from a toilet seal. Kohler would have us believe that this fancy new yellow one is much higher quality than the shoddy, inferior red one it replaces. This begs the question of why they used the red one in the first place. Unless the exciting, fast-paced world of toilet seals is moving faster than I expected, and yellow rubber represents a new pinnacle of technological achievement. The packaging advertises many fine qualities of this toilet seal. Among the extolled virtues: it is, resistant to chemical attack. I got a bit of a laugh out of that. Its a toilet, not a gas mask! I sighed, rolling my eyes. But, while I was installing it, I happened to have YouTube playing in the background. And I got a Taco Bell ad. The package was still on the counter nearest to the water closet. As the ad played, I glanced at it, reconsidering that line. Maybe its claim isnt so silly after all. The real question is whether, down the road a few years, when its the new seals turn to replace, the second seal from this two-pack will be anywhere to be found. (For my future self, if I happen to see my own review while ordering more when it isnt, I put it in the closet with the extra light bulbs. Because that seemed like a bright idea.)

Greater than one weekI had the older red type seal that shipped with my Kohler toilet about 15-17 years ago and it eventually became so worn down it showed variance in certain areas that made it no longer flat and snug around the canister and I would notice my tank is constantly pouring water down the bowl, attempting to refill. I didnt go with a cheaper or alternative part because I know this seal is guaranteed to work. It will have the appropriate thickness, and diameter. I dont know how these new yellow silicone based seals will last over time or how they will change (ex. shrink or expand) but I know they are supposed to be better and specifically replace the red seals. What I made sure to do is properly remove the chain from the canister and get it out with a quarter turn so I can properly clean it. I used isopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip to clean the groove on the canister that the seal will need to fit into, as well as the base that makes contact with the lower part in the tank. I then used a waterproof silicone grease (Danco 88693) that I spread on the entire seal lightly. This is probably not required but it does help provide an extra layer of protection on the seal from contaminants. This grease is typically used on o-rings in faucets and other seals on plumbing fixtures. There are 2 seals provided in separate packaging so one can serve as a great backup.
