> 3 dayIt takes a couple of minutes to get it calibrated but it is not difficult if you follow the proper procedure. Usually an acceptable SWR is close without even keying the mic and the carrier is only used to fine tune to its lowest point. Dont expect it to solve big antenna issues (using a metal broom handle on 20 meters) but it will resolve many out of band SWR issues. Remember that it is simply fooling and protecting the transceiver but not actually solving the antenna mismatch.

> 3 dayWell, hams often say MFJ stands for Mighty Fine Junk and in this case they are right. The tuner is VERY twitchy when moving the knobs trying to tune different bands. My antenna is resonant on 20 and 40 meters, but other bands are hard to get right without a matching unit, which is why I got this tuner. My radio wont transmit if there is a mismatch greater than 3:1. Even though the MFJ says it has tuned to 1:1, the radio often sees SWR great than 3:1 and will shut off transmit. On some knob positions, when trying to tune, the needles pulse like theyre following a regular dance beat or something. This unit acts much worse than my older 945E which I moved to my QRP unit out in the shack. This was an open box return from Ham Radio Outlet, so I guess Im stuck with it. Going to open it up, clean it out and hope for the best.

> 3 dayAfter reading about bad solder joints and loose screws I took it apart. Everything was neat, tight, and properly soldered. The capacitor knobs were almost perfectly aligned. Certainly commercialy acceptable. Also, functionally it works very well.
