To answer the question made by Wesley Gibson at the end of Wanted when he asked in his moment of sheer defiance at everyday life What the @#&* have you done today? I will answer that I have been forced to sit through a film that displays a piss poor attempt at merging the nihilistic philosophy of Chuck Palahniuks Fight Club and the special effects of The Matrix with comic book camp. All one has to be is literate enough to know about Palahniuks work beyond the eclipse viewer sight that the film offered but then again in America not very many read so that is probably asking a lot. Still, one doesnt have to look that far to see the attempts at replicating the style. First of all, there is the droning of the main character/narrator Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) who is depressed with his boring life of nagging bosses, scraping by in a ratty apartment, a cheating girlfriend, and a less than laudable best friend. This is similar if not exactly like the narrator of Fight Club whom many fans have called Jack. Next is the translation of the erotic. Within Fight Club some have attributed the act of two bare chest men fighting and hearing the sound of fists slamming against bare flesh as homoerotic. Translating this to Wanted and given how homophobic American culture is this erotica was facilitated by the dominatrix-like S&M relationship between Wesley and Fox (Angelina Jolie) who treated the newcomer as if he were a dog to be trained to do simple tricks. The only thing that Jolie was missing was leather, a whip, and a leash for Wesley. Another aspect that Wanted has done in its poor imitation of Fight Club is what Chuck Palahniuk had referred to in an interview as a Social Model Theory in which he talked about how popular fiction in the 20th century shows us how to behave in society. One the one hand one shouldnt be passive or they may end up killing themselves and one shouldnt be a rebel otherwise the culture may kill them. Instead, one should be more of a moderate observer. He attributed this model to Fight Club in which Jack was the passive one and Tyler Durden was the rebel and by the end of the story they collapsed into each other to become the moderate observer. This is the same model that is done in Wanted where Wesley Gibson begins as the passive one and nearly driving himself insane from his own monotony. Then he becomes the rebel and would eventually be destroyed by the very people, The Fraternity, who created him. However, in the end Wesley doesnt become the moderate observer. Instead he still continues to be the rebel that would be destroyed sooner or later. If only Wanted had the same insight as Fight Club instead of being lost in its camp of Michael Bay-like explosions and brutish and unintelligent fighting sequences. The only thing that I regret apart from seeing this film is that I cant rate it with zero stars.

It is a thriller with twist I did not expect. A few friends said this movie was rather dull. I on the other hand disagree entirely, I really enjoyed the film.
