Perfect for our hermit crabs. Much better than sand or some of the other things we have tried that are specifically for reptiles or hermit crabs but ended up being the wrong consistency for our crabs to crawl in. Make sure this is at least twice as deep as your largest crab, they need to be able to bury themselves when they molt. Sadly, we were not told this when we bought our hermit crabs at the mall and were told that an inch of sand was plenty -- so make sure you educate yourself. This comes in a small brick and then you just add water to it and it expands to be plenty for our 10 gallon tank.

One of the shells is unsuitable for hermit crabs. The bag says small/medium but the whole in one shell is way too big for a small/medium crab. By the time the crab would be large enough for that whole, the shell would be too small for the body. Only 4 shells in the bag total. Disappointing quality control.

I dont know where I read about this, but after ten years of cleaning a disgusting hermit crab cage with gravel and crab droppings, I read about the coconut fibers. This stuff is fantastic: it eliminates odors, and when you clean the cage, its a far less unpleasant experience. Moreover, one package of this stuff, with water, balloons to many times its original size. I watered the entire package and then scooped most of it into four Ziplocks and froze them, and used them with each cage cleaning. This stuff is fantastic and Crabby, our 12yo hermit crab, loves it: he stuff the coconut into shells and burrows into it every day.

My hermit crabs love this stuff. They travel over it & are able to bury themselves in it very easily.

This is a lot bigger than I expected but Im not complaining... Its definitely worth the price and will surely last me a long time for the 5.5 aquarium I have for my hermit crabs. I suggest breaking it into smaller pieces if youre only using it for a small enclosure.
