This works great as disposable medium-fine filter media. It doesn’t impede the flow in my canister filter. However, it clogs quickly in a HOB filter. Since the flow relies on gravity, water backs up. For HOB filters, I just use filter sponge. TL;DR: Good for canister filters, bad for HOB filters.

I cut out sizes for my caddy in my Nuvo 60 gal. Got around 8 or 10 out of one sheet. Absorbs very well catching the bigger particles on the more open rougher side than straining through the finer side of the pad. What is nice is that you can easily wash the pad and reuse. Washes out easily under a kitchen faucet. I try to change out pads daily. I am set for a long time with this purchase.

Previous to finding this duel density filter pad, Id spend tons of money on precut Fluval and Hydor media for my filter. Not only is this stuff a quarter (or less) of the cost, it is of much higher quality, and doesnt disintegrate after a month in my external canister filter. If can be rinsed and reused 2 or 3 times before discarding, and I usually clean the filter of my tank once every month or two. My water is always crystal clear and I always get comments about the clarity and health of my tank. I cut a paper stencil as a guide to the shape of my filter and keep in in the bag with the pads, so creating a perfect fitting match takes less than a minute with a sharp pair of scissors. Consider the savings of using this product: I used to buy both fine and course pre-cut pads from Hydor. To buy a set of both for each filter change it was roughly $20. This duel-density padding replaces the need for both, so each cut pad takes half the space, leaving more room for other types of media. I can cut 30 new pads off of one roll of this dual density padding which costs around $17. Add it up: $20 x 30 Fluval/Hydor filter changes is $600!! $17 / 30 Aquatic Experts dual density filter changes (or more if you reuse the pad several times like I do) comes out to $0.57 per change, and this stuff is of MUCH better quality!! Its a no brainer, buy this filter pad, and save bunches of money, while improving the health of your tank!

I have been working on cycling my aquarium for about a month and a 1/2 now and have really been struggling with the nitrites. Despite the many water changes and beneficial bacteria Ive been adding in they just havent gone down and have been at a dangerous level. My nitrites were reduced overnight just by adding these to my filter cartridge. I dont think they were even advertised as nitrite reducers but they certainly have done the trick when nothing else has. This is such an affordable replacement for the carbon filters I have been using and they offer sicker and way more protection and can be customized according to size and preference. You can even add 2 layers of these for even more filtration. No more pricey rip off cartridge filters for me!

The company is very proactive in making sure you understand their product and how best to use it. All the instructional videos are great. I made a template of my filter basket using cardboard. Used it to trace with a sharpie on the filter roll to get the most filters possible, 25. I waited to write this review until after a couple of filter cleanings. When I saw the filter roll, I was concerned at first. The filter looks and feels exactly like the Penn Plax filters that came with my cannister filter. The Penn Plax filters cannot be rinsed and reused, they disintegrate. The filter worked as it had before these filter pads in keeping my tank water clean. After 2 weeks of use, I removed them and rinsed them, which they withstood perfectly. I put the filters back in and left it for another 2 weeks. The filters rinsed out the second time just as good as the first time. For the price, if you are willing to spend a little time cutting the filters out, this is just as good as the Penn Plax filters, cheaper and, with rinsing, last way way longer. The only issue I came across was trying to figure out which way the water flows through my cannister so I could make sure I had the filter media in the right way (loose section on top or bottom). That was not easy to figure out. I decided on looser weave side on top and tighter weave side on the bottom. I honestly don’t know if that is the correct direction but, it’s keeping the tank clean.

This is a really great filter media. I use it in an above tank wet-dry filter for both mechanical and bio filtration. I only have to replace the top layer when it gets dirty, while the lower layers stay colonized with beneficial bacteria and free of debris. It has a good density and stiffness for a media. Filter floss that is too soft and fluffy becomes packed down as soon as water begins to flow through it, but this bonded media keeps it shape much better. This is especially important with a wet-dry filter where I want it to resist compressing, because the air space withing the media stack is needed to optimize oxygenation and elimination of ammonia. At the same time it is flexible enough to cut easily with ordinary scissors and bend to any shape needed. It also is perfect to disperse water flow through a filter so that channeling does not result in dead spaces in the media. One side of the media is slightly stiffer and more dense than the softer side. I have water flow into the soft side, and then the more dense side ensures that the flow spreads out and does not go straight through lower layers. Many DIYers suggest alternatives to traditional filter media such as plastic pot scrubbers or fluffy bath sponges. This is cheaper than those cost saving alternatives, it works much better, and it is easy to cut and fit for any shape needed. For my filters, I make a sandwich of generic ceramic rings between two layers of this poly material, which Ive found to be the best balance of effectiveness and affordability.

Best solution for me so far. I fold an 18x12 section over in half to fit in my 9x12 drip tray, so this roll is perfect size as it is 18 wide. By folding over, I have the more porous layer of the second half facing the bottom of the drip tray which allows proper flow through drip holes. Otherwise pads will clog at the drip holes and flow will bypass. Lasts almost 2 weeks on my 55gal heavily planted, moderately stocked tank at 500 gph in a 20gal sump. Clear water. I have tried various combinations of blue and pink bonded as well as polishing pads... liked them all, but this has been the most reasonable solution so far. In my setup, the first layer handles mostly with plant detritus and some stray bits of algae from maintenance that makes it through the sponge pre-filter on my overflow. The dense layer handles waste. The layer setup on this is very effective. Thickness is perfect for my 2 drip tray. Will rise clean for two reasonable uses in my application. I have attached a pic to show size.
