WordPerfect Office Standard 2020 comes with a DVD for installation. I needed an Office Suite for my HP laptop. For the most part, I type simple documents. I have Microsoft Word on my other computers. I rarely open PowerPoint and Excel, but I will write a few words about their counterparts. Any documents created on Quattro Pro (excel) and Presentations (powerpoint) are transferrable to a Word document, once on Word the graphs, documents, you can continue working on them. Some of the content listed on the box, the extra clip-on images, eBook Publisher, and the photo editing, known as AfterShot, are add-ons. I haven’t located the eBook Publisher-customer service wasn’t able to help me. I did add on the photo editing, AfterShot sent me to a YouTube for instructions. I was impressed with sectional editing of images, certain objects or backgrounds and the history that remembers steps allowing you to backtrack to a specific procedure without starting over. There are plenty of tutorials included for the different programs. Most of the programs are comparable to Microsoft Word. The Pocket Oxford English Dictionary is included. My test word is ‘barmbrack’ which the dictionary did not have. For twenty-five dollars the Oxford Concise Dictionary is offered as an upgrade. Rather than chance that barmbrack isn’t in the Concise Dictionary, I can go online or ask my phone for definitions for words not listed in the Pocket OED. Without being a user of several of the programs offered, I can’t comparatively say what distinguishes this from other Office Suites.

Maybe I’ve been using the competition for too long but I found this a bit difficult to get the hang of. Even though I set it up to be able to open all types of documents there are some that it claims it can’t open (old word docs). I find that very frustrating. I am okay with the spreadsheet, but even that isn’t as user friendly as the competition (even in the writing of formulas I have faced frustration). Perhaps it’s just a learning curve, but at this point I am feeling like I should have purchased what I was used to.

So let me start by saying that 30 years ago, when WordPerfect was one of the standard word processors, I really didn’t care much for the Microsoft variant. But time has gone by and while the latter made “huge” improvements it feels that WordPerfect didn’t quite keep pace. It joined the Corel family some time ago, which we can attribute the fact to that it even is still alive, but improvements are on a much slower pace than the venerable CorelDraw product line. One major issue with Corel software is the installer they’ve been distributing for a few years now. On my computer it simply will open a window but not install the program. Corel’s help blog shows quite a few folks with the same problem and to this date the only “solution” is a workaround to create another user account on the same computer ans install it for all from there. To be sure, Corel software is the only one out of a plethora of applications that has this problem. It should be easy to fix that, but it still requires the workaround to even install updates. So WordPerfect is the word processor as mentioned, and it sure does work and does a few things well. However, the interface simply feels outdated (not just compared to banner/tab design of mentioned competition). The icons really need a face lift and there is no real option for tablet mode (for fingers). Although it does have a Microsoft Word Interface options, that’s only the icons and associated commands, and not the banner. Overall, I really wanted to like it as I have fond memories for times long gone, but nostalgia really lost to what feels like an outdated program. Presentations shares a similar fate as WordPerfect, although within the suite it’s at least consistent. It won’t keep you from making good presentations, but it does feel less supportive in getting there. If you’re a MS PowerPoint user, it’s fairly difficult to get around and work with Presentations. Quattro looks as if it’s in the same category, but it’s probably the star of the Suite by sheer functionality. It’s still a spreadsheet, and many add ons require Excel while not supporting Quattro. It’s still fairly powerful and the nature of the program makes the somewhat clunky less of a problem. Overall, this suite is fully functional and does not keep you from doing great work. It does, however, make you life relatively hard if you’re used to the Microsoft environment. Even if your starting out, some functionality isn’t very streamlined.

This has always been a much better program than word yet somehow it is not nearly as popular

This program has a word processor that is more advanced than MS Word. But, it has a spreadsheet program that lacks what Excel has, but is still workable. The database feature is pretty much useless and there is not a mail program. If you are working in an office that works with forms that have to be updated on a regular basis (even one that is 20 years old) this is the suite to get. If you work in an office that is heavy in spreadsheets, go for Microsoft Office. This does not have a cloud like Office has. It works with pdf and spreadsheet generation, epublishing features, rich presentation capabilities, and compatibility with other word processors and office suites. One thing this program has that others dont, is that because it is not as popular as the Microsoft Office Suite, it gets less malware, because hackers break the more popular office suites more often. That is a huge plus.

My reason for trying out Wordperfect Office was purely financial. I am sick and tired of Microsoft demanding yearly subscriptions for software that we used to be able to buy outright with a lifetime license. The last time I used wordperfect was nearly 2 decades ago and I hoped that the differences between the two would be minimal. As a home user who mostly uses email, word processing and the occasional desktop publishing software, this suite has everything I would need. However, Microsoft Office and Corel Wordperfect Office now have very significant differences and I have had a very hard time trying to transition to the software. Not all my microsoft files open easily and, when I am sent a word attachment in email, word perfect seems to lose the formatting details. There are many things to like about the software. The ability to see all your formatting code is great if you are working with a document and cant figure out why the formatting is doing weird things. All the tools you need are in the suite, the only issue is learning how to use them. So, a lot of learning to do and some annoyance when converting documents from other software, but a really good program nevertheless.

I got this suite of software mainly for word processing. As such, I can give the WordPerfect word processor top marks. Ive been using it for about a month and everything that my old wp (MS Word) did, this does also, and does equally well. Some items are located in different spots in the drop downs and Im sure theres extra features in both that I probably havent tapped into, but for my needs, they both work equally well. As for spreadsheets, I have always been a fan of MS Excel, and i have several on-going sheets that Ive been updating for years. Opening Quatro, it appears very similar, and i set up some basic formukas and everything appears good. My only problem came when opening a spreadsheet that I originally devised many years ago. Ive been updating and altering it for years... its been through multiple operating systems (going all the way back the Vista) and multiple upgrades of Excel... it still serves me well. When I originally tried opening it with Quatro, it stumbled. It kept trying to open then would shut down. When I finally got it to stay open, I had to resave it in a different format and then it would start opening properly. This may be a result of the age or complexity of this specific spreadsheet, but i expect it may just be settings that its picked up from being translated and retransmitted over the years. After some difficulties, it now works properly on Quatro. ( I should also note that starting a new spreadsheet with Quatto has worked flawlessly.) As for presentation software, I no longer have much of a need, but i did open Presentations and played with it to get a feel for how it works. It seems comparable and very similar to PowerPoint. This suite slso comes with Corels Aftershot - a photo editing package that allows fairly detailed basic editing and correction, cropping, color scales, saturation contrast, etc. It does a nice job and is straightforward and easy to use. (For more fancy photo editing, they offer a pro version for an additional fee. All in all, this is a quality suite of user friendly office type products. Recommended.

I just wish they made it for Mac as well. I do wonder about the Pro version, which also has some kind of database management function, but this Standard version is what i have always used. As word processing software, it is simply better than Word, as it gives you more control.
