The Espeon SS+ 500GB Portable Solid State USB Drive is very compact and light weightwhich makes it very easy to carry around. I ran the CrystalDiskMark test on it and reported pretty decent performance as compared to other 250 GB USB drives I have tested. It took about 1 minute and 14 seconds to transfer a 3 Gbyte video file from an external RAID drive to this USB drive connected to my PC. Recommended based on its portability, performance, and reasonable price point.

This flash drive is an excellent little device to have for when I want to transport a handful of movies and TV shows in a small package. Rather than take the master copies on the full external drives, I can transfer them quickly to this thumb drive and have a selection of media with minimal storage and no concern of losing the originals or damaging their drive. As others have said, the housing of this drive does feel a little flimsy and I think that it could have been upgraded, but Im happy with the size, speed, portability and function of this USB drive. Thats about 500mb second. From an m.2 via USB c. If performance is the deciding factor then this drive is an excellent choice. I like the color too, it makes it easy to see.

The manufacturer claims 260 MB/s writes and 600 MB/s read speeds I was only able to get 345 MB/s reads and 280 MB/s write. I saw other reviewers post read speeds of 455 MB/s so I believe the claim of 600MB/s maybe a little bit on the far side but this drive is still blazing fast. The write speed was higher than the claimed 260 MB/s but the reads were slower than the 600 MB/s claim by a large margin. I tested my read speeds from my M.2 drive which I was using on the test and I was getting 2100MB/s reads and 2000MB/s writes on my Western Digital Black NVMe drive. I tested my SanDisk portable NVMe SSD and connected on the same USB 3.2 port was able to get 720 MB/s read and 755 MB/s writes so my system is capable of pushing the limits of the portable USB drive. The drive was recognized as a USB 3.2 device on my Dell desktop 5090 specs: i7-11700T, 32 GB DDR4 3200MHz memory, M.2 NVMe WD Black drive, Windows 10 Pro When copying to/from a NVMe drive connected via a external USB drive enclosure I am able to get over 900MB/s reads and 600 MB/s writes to a Samsung M.2 NVMe V1.3 drive on my USB 3.2 port so the bottleneck is with the portable SSD drive. One thing I noticed when copying large amounts of data to the drive the write speed begins to drop as the drive heats up. I started the test and the drive temperature was 48C and after copying over 100GB the temperature had risen to 70C and while copying the drive speed decreased from around 285 MB/s to 135 MB/s I suspect due to the heat the drive started to throttle the write for thermal protection. The price to storage capacity and the speed makes this a great value because for $45 dollars you get a 256GB thumb drive with blazing speeds in a very compact size. I have several other 256GB thumb drives and they average around 45 MB/s to 55 MB/s nothing close to the 350 MB/s this drive delivers in real world usage.

The listing pictures show you exactly what you get. It looks like a typical USB drive, but its much faster than most and lower cost than other very fast drives. I got the 250 GB version. As I do with most drives, I did the simple best case scenario read and write of a very large file. In this case a 36 GB file. In my picture where the line is fairly consistent all the way, thats read performance and it was actually averaging closer to 450 MB/s early on. At all times it stayed above 400 MB/s. Not up to the 600 MB/s claimed for read speed, but faster than the vast majority of USB thumb drives. The destination drive is a super fast Samsung NVMe drive capable of over 3,000 MB/s in my system, and the port used allows at least 760 MB/s transfers in both directions. So the speed limitation was definitely in this Espeon drive. The write side of the equation is quite interesting, as for quite some time it maintains a speed of about 560 MB/s. Over 20 GB worth at that speed, which suggests that 98+% of usage may see much faster write speeds than the 260 MB/s claimed. There is some sort of memory/cache buffer in the drive that allows the higher speed for a long time before it does drop down to around 260 MB/s as shown in my other picture. On the read performance, you have to consider that it is very common for the smallest size of high speed drives that the performance is not equal to the middle size(s) (If there is a middle size or middle sizes.) and largest size. Since I dont have a 500 GB or 1 TB size of this Espeon to test I have no way of knowing if thats the case. In any event the performance of this USB drive is competitive with the very fast Sandisk here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N7QDO7M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 But as of now this drive is $20 less than the Sandisk. Of course Sandisk is very well known and in general very reliable, so you do have to consider that in your price comparison. At just $40 right now the 250 GB version is definitely worth a try.

Notes

Optimal Speeds Optimal Speeds will require USB 3.2 Gen 2 SuperSpeed+ ports. Also compatible with older ports but the speed will be bottlenecked by the port"s speed limitation. (older ports ie: USB 3.2 Gen 1 SuperSpeed regular, USB 3.1, USB 3.0, USB 2.0)
Car Navigation/Audio Our drives ship preformatted with Optimal exFAT Format. Due to limitations of Car Navigation/Audio, it may require a reformat to the older FAT32 format for compatibility. Speeds will also be limited to the port maximums.
PS4/PS5 Compatibility Can be used for PS4/PS5 backup storage and PS4/PS5 internal HDD Update. Drives with 500GB capacity or more can also be used for storage expansion. Less than 500GB is not supported. (requires PS4 software 4.50 or later)
Industry Standard Capacity Calculation based on 1GB=1000000000 bytes. Some of the listed capacity is used for formatting and other functions. Actual usable storage space will be slightly less than listed.
Backup Your Data Always backup your data on multiple sources for safe keeping.
