I use the G-Technology 5TB external HD to store and run my Photo Library so that I can free up storage space on my Mac Pro Laptop. Transfer speed is very good compared to my other external HD. I would recommend it.

As a rugged spinning drive, this is the one to get. It is cheaper than the Lacie Rugged drives and also has a better sustained read/write speed. I transferred data over 7 hours and the write speed never dipped from about 110mb/s.

One of my older external drives started to act up so I got this to back up all my drives. Its small doesnt require an additional power supply. You could pretty much put it in your pocket and take it with you.

For the last two years this drive has been on my desk taking back ups of my computer. The externals look brand new like it was just taken out of the box. After not using it for a period of time, I took off the rubber bumper to check the size of the drive. When I took the bumper off the plastic plate that holds the hard drive to the metal enclosure fell off. The plastic bracket that holds the drive in its case snapped on both sides which caused the plate to fall off and the actual drive to be exposed. Knowing that the drive is still under warranty, I contacted customer support and made the subject of the ticket “Armor Housing Broke”. After providing pictures and info about the issue, customer service approved my replacement. They specifically asked for the “bare drive” and no accessories to be shipped to them. Being that the drive is exposed from the case, I took the drive out of the exterior metal case to ship the “bare drive” as they asked. Before shipping out the bare drive, I emailed back and asked what I would be getting in return; thinking that if they just send me a new drive, I will still have the same issue because the enclosure is the part of the product that is broken and so a new bare drive will not fix the issue. They then asked for more pictures, which I provided, and they responded that they do not cover external damage to the drive and because the internal drive was exposed from the shell, they can no longer honor the warranty. They continued to explain that they didn’t realize there was “external damage” to the drive which is not covered under warranty. And again because the drive was removed from the metal shell the warranty is voided. However the only reason the drive was ever removed from the shell was because they asked for the “bare drive”. Emails have gone back and forth now for almost a week. Any other company I’ve dealt with in recent history has not given me this much trouble over a product replacement that is still under warranty. Not to mention a warranty replacement that was approved and then retracted because they finally understood the problem; even though the subject of the ticket clearly explained the problem. I’m now currently stuck with a drive that even customer support considers “unreliable“. I don’t feel comfortable using this drive for what it was intended for because of the issue. While I originally liked the product, customer support is horrible to deal with and the warranty is useless.

Moderate read / write speed for a spinning drive, can not be RAIDed or daisy chained, solid & rugged work / storage mobile drive for the money

I want to start out by saying that this external HD worked great until it started to get full. I bought this almost exactly a year ago. And the only thing I have used it for is to store media files mp4s, mp3s and a number of other media file formats. It was Thunderbolt compatible and I really liked that. But once it got too the point where there was only 100gb left it started getting glitchy. When I would be downloading it would abruptly stop and freeze and it started to cause my whole laptop to freeze up. And then one day it just stopped working and I lost 6 years worth of memories, movies, my music and a bunch of movies on tape that I got for my blind brother... EVERYTHING WAS LOST! I have tried everything to recover it but from what I can tell there is nothing I can do. Im just devastated and heart broken.

IM REALLY UPSET, I BUY THIS EXTERNAL DRIVE AND ALMOST SAVE THERE ALL MY LIFE, PHOTOS, VIDEOS, DOCUMENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY AND MAESTRI. And after a few months OF use, it doesnt work anymore, I try different wired just in case but with no luck. Im really disappointed, now I dont know how I gonna recover all my backups.

This thing is amazing! Quiet and FAST, reliable file transfers n 125Mb/sec transfers on an older machine where USB 3.0 had to be tricked into working (thats a separate and long story that really doesnt matter.) Silent running - no fan? How is this possible?! I would definitely buy again - highest of recommendations!
