This is a delightful black & white set, to honor a pioneering animation film. I enjoyed putting it together - and also seeing how the mechanical stuff is set up.

The black/white theme is striking - yeah, it made the set a little more difficult to build (when I do sets, I sort the bricks by color first, so I pretty much had two piles at any given time here) but the end result is exactly the right mix of retro and modern. Building went pretty quick, only a couple of hours at moderate speed, and I liked the design architecture here...some very interesting building techniques. Main nit I have with the set....NO PETE. Minor nit: No potato peeling room! I can forgive the lack of potato preparation here, and the boat itself isnt quite to scale of the Mickey figure, but no Pete is a pretty glaring omission. At least the parrot is there, so I can console myself by having Mickey throw things at him. It looks great as a display piece, with enough fun stuff (water wheel) to make it interesting. I wouldnt call it really something for a kid to play with though....like the Yellow Submarine kit, its really best as a callback for some of us adult-aged kids to build and show off, and not so much to have it do battle with the Ninjago or host LEGO Obi Wan on some damned fool idealistic crusade. A very good set, even with missing Pete. I like it a lot.

I am absolutely thrilled that this is not all black and white! The colorful bricks used for the inner workings of the steam boat really made it fun! I wish you could have seen my smile when I opened the box! The build is not difficult, but has some areas that are a little trickier than others. The step by step instructions were easy enough for a 9 year old to follow. It took him approximately 4 hours or so. He had one smokestack get stuck, but we found a fix to help us. Simply pick up the one smoke stack and gently put it down. I know some others had to rebuild theirs by removing one piece. We did not need to do that. Your finished steamboat is aproximately 10”x5” and features moving smokestacks, and moving paddlewheel! It comes with both Mickey and Minnie! I love knowing all the cheerful colors fill the interior of our Steamboat!

My son LOVES Legos and Adores Steam Boat Willie. We couldnt pass this up for Christmas. He was so excited to receive it. I did price compare and Amazon had the best price around. All the pieces were there and it arrived in the time frame stated. Bonus points for moving pieces! The smoke stacks go up and down when you roll the boat across the floor!
