> 3 dayThe game helps fill in some more missing information about how Big Boss turned away from FOX and how he amassed an army to command. The controls are a little difficult to master, especially the use of CQC, but it is a very well done game.

> 3 dayNot as good as Peace Walker but you can definitely tell how it was a stepping stone leading to what Peace Walker became. Its awkward playing any MGS game on PSP due to the limited controls but it wont completely ruin your experience. This is definitely better than MGS Portable Ops Plus since it actually has a plot and a reasonable level progression. Its good but the home console entries are better. I recommend this one to only die-hard fans that have played all of the games in the main series first. This is still a solid experience though. Not a bad game at all.

> 3 dayThis is a terrific PSP game not to mention a terrific Metal Gear game. Kudos to Kojima for being willing to support the platform and for doing so with a game rooted in canon. The game does a terrific job of both providing an entertaining narrative as well as excellent gameplay despite the PSPs lack of a second thumbstick. This game serves as a prequel to the original Metal Gear games (on the MSX system) as well as Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2. It is essentially a sequel to MGS3: Snake Eater, following the exploits of Naked Snake prior to his ascension as Big Boss. Im not sure why this game is so rare and difficult to obtain. Japanese publishers like Konami tend be more inclined to discontinuing a game, however, this game is an essential piece of the Metal Gear saga as well as one of the biggest selling and best reviewed PSP titles ever. The good news is, with the forthcoming release of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Sony has finally made this game (as well as its expansion Portable Ops Plus) available for digital download through the Playstation store. For those unable to obtain a reasonably priced copy of the UMD version, I highly suggest you download it for a mere $15. As a PSP owner, youll be glad you did.

Greater than one weekMetal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is a fine game tha tells the rest of the story of how the Patriots and Foxhound rose and how the events of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 came to pass. The plot is eerily reminisciant of Metal Gear Solid, even more so than the other MGS titles, but in a way that makes you realize just how similar Solid Snake was to his father. The controls are a little confusing at first, but one gets used to them quickly. The character models are goregeously rendered, the environments are decent, but some things, like the hexagonal truck tires are just horrible and make me laugh. The biggest problem I have with this is the cutscenes, which are not Computer rendered, and are instead hand drawn and animated by some 2 bit artist with no talent. Cutscenes like these were acceptable in 1994, but on a PSP, they scream of laziness. Props for the returning cast of Snake Eater though, and they are as good as they were then, except David Hayter is really the only one you actually HEAR out of all of them for most of the game. On a whole, if youve considered buying Metal Gear Acid or Acid 2, BUY THIS INSTEAD.

> 3 dayI LOVE Metal Gear Solid. I grew up on it, and have enjoyed every title in the series that is in line with the canon plot, except for this one. The story may as well be non-canon because it really never comes up again. The sound is bad, the cut scenes kind of awful, and the controls are atrocious to the point of preventing me from playing this game beyond the first hour or so. The graphics, even for the PSP, are fairly sub-par as well. Skip this game, maybe watch the cutscenes online if you need this games story, and get Peace Walker instead. This game is NOT representative of the rest of MGS.

> 3 daySome background about my past experiences with Metal Gear games are as follows, plus some other notes: - I am ONLY INTERESTED in single-player games/features only! So this review is based upon the single-player aspect of MGS:PO. - I returned the game prior to level 3 (after the communications tower level), because I couldnt stand the controls. So based on that... -I absolutely LOVED METAL GEAR SOLID for the PSX. It was challenging, but not overly crazy impossible. There were so many cool, and new gaming techniques (like the controller up to the arm part) that set this game in the upper echelon of game development. The story, the different methods to get past certain areas, etc...A TRUE METAL GEAR CLASSIC! -METAL GEAR SOLID 2 for the PS2, tried to emulate its predecessor, and came up short, but was still a fun game (albeit one that many fans were upset about...Raiden...) Overall, not nearly as good as the PSX game. -METAL GEAR SOLID 3 SNAKE EATER was a pure BOREFEST. Sneaking around the jungle feeding on various vegetation and animals was tedious. Where did all THE FUN AND ACTION GO??? Very big disappointment. So now on to PORTABLE OPS...you can see where this is going, and why I bought this game is beyond me. I will probably never buy another MGS game again. The controls are an absolute disaster! I consider myself pretty good at gaming, but this just did not translate to the PSP very well. When I needed to make quick kills or was in a shootout...forget it! A wrong button or a wrong turn and youre spotted; and once that happens, its over for ya! Again, the game is not very fun. Graphics are subpar, and most environments appear very empty and bare. I did dig the cutscenes, though! They are in a comic-book style fashion, and definitely kept me interested in the game. There is a Metal Gear digital comic available and I would recommend that one, as well as either METAL GEAR AC!D games, both of those are good, as well. Sorry, MGS fans...this ones for the bargain bins!!
