06-04-2025My brother in law was having issues with his PS4 overheating and completely shutting off, within minutes of loading a game. The console itself didnt feel hot to the touch when this happened (which is what Id assume would be the case if it was overheating...I was wrong). He got frustrated and decided to buy a new one - so he gave his old one to us.

> 3 dayIve used Arctic Silver thermal paste for my previous custom-built PC since I first assembled it in 2017. I usually just use 5 small pea-sized dabs and then put the fan/heatsink on it and it distributes pretty evenly along the surface of my CPU. I bought my last tube a year or two ago and I still have plenty left to work with in future builds!

Applied it to the APU of my PS4 thats just over 5 years old, now I dont hear the howling of the fan and I can actually play a game for longer than 3 minutes before my system shuts down. Been playing MGS 5 (late to the game, obviously) for hours on end and the PS4 stays cool, thanks to the thermal paste.

> 3 dayIt did not work. My cpu was way to hot with this stuff, hitting 90-95 degrees. I got some other stuff also arctic silver that my buddy had on hand and that kept my cpu at 75-80.

> 3 dayAfter getting a very thin, even coating and re-installing the CPU Cooling block, I got almost NO Cooling (i.e. thermal transfer) at all. I had to use another brand (Arctic MX-2) before I got the necessary cooling effect. Also, When I removed the cooling block, there was ZERO adhesion to the cooling block. The CPU coating seemed to act like a coat of paint!

Performance
3 to 12 degrees centigrade lower CPU full load core temperatures than standard thermal compounds or thermal pads when measured with a calibrated thermal diode imbedded in the CPU core.
Coverage Area: A 3.5 gram syringe contains enough compound to cover at least 15 to 25 small CPU cores, or 6 to 10 large CPU cores, or 2 to 5 heat plates. At a layer 0.003" thick, the 3.5 gram syringe will cover approximately 16 square inches

Arctic Silver 5 does not contain any silicone. The suspension fluid is a proprietary mixture of advanced polysynthetic oils that work together to provide three distinctive functional phases. As it comes from the syringe, Arctic Silver 5"s consistency is engineered for easy application. During the CPU"s initial use, the compound thins out to enhance the filling of the microscopic valleys and ensure the best physical contact between the heatsink and the CPU core. Then the compound thickens slightly over the next 50 to 200 hours of use to its final consistency designed for long-term stability. (This should not be confused with conventional phase change pads that are pre-attached to many heatsinks. Those pads melt each time they get hot then re-solidify when they cool.
The viscosity changes that Arctic Silver 5 goes through are much more subtle and ultimately much more effective.)
