> 3 dayI have been reading a very useful book - ‘Restoring Your Digestive Health’ - by Jordan S Rubin and Joseph Brasco, both MDs. They have a section titled ‘Sub-Par Supplements’ in the book, and interestingly, this section lists amino acid supplements. Many Amino acid supplements are sold to athletes and bodybuilders to help them build muscle strength. The problem with these supplements, however, is that they are a far cry from the amino acids in food. In the protein from food sources, different kinds of amino acids are bound together in long molecule chains, but in supplements the amino acids are free form or unbound. Each type of amino acid is sold as an isolate. Research suggests that these isolate, free-form amino acids are not absorbed adequately. Cofactors present in food sources probably help the body metabolize amino acids, but those cofactors are not present in free form amino acids. As long as you are getting enough protein in your food, you do not need to take amino acid supplements. Consume lacto-fermented foods and take high quality digestive enzymes to improve your protein digestion if you feel that you are deficient in amino acids. In general, we do not recommend these supplements for most patients.

> 3 dayI have been taking Lysine for many years. This product is the same, but less expensive than most. The capsules are fairly large, but I have no difficulty swallowing them.

> 3 dayI frequently get a cold sore. I am now using this as a preventive measure for a while. It was suggested by a pharmacist for this reason. Small price to pay for a product that helps with that annoying problem!!

> 3 dayAs somebody who suffers from cold sores on my lips, this stuff is a life saver. I always buy one bottle of the 250 count, 500mg tablets and one bottle of the 100 count, 1000mg tablets at the same time (repeat customer here). I take one 500mg tablet every morning as preventative maintenance and I barely ever get the cold sores anymore. But of course mother nature always comes through during times of high stress (when you want a cold sore the least) and I can always tell when Im about to get one. Thats when I start popping the 1000mg tablets; Ill take about 6 of them throughout the day in place of the daily 500mg tablets. I only have to do this for 2-3 days and the cold sore never gets the chance to rear its ugly head. I guess I should post a little disclaimer here: Im no medical expert and I have no idea how much L-Lysine is safe to take on a daily basis. Im not necessarily recommending you take the same amount of this medication as I do when you get a cold sore, Im only telling you what works for me. For all I know its entirely safe, but I would recommend doing some research or talking to your doctor before taking a large amount of anything (of course).
