    Greater than one week

Honestly a pretty solid cutting compound but very similar to Meguires M100 or M105. There’s not a shocking difference between this 3M product vs Meguires, they both cut about the same regardless if on paint or plastics like headlights / taillights. Paint is obviously softer and easier to cut than plastic but this compound CAN do it with enough passes and a good cutting pad. The main seller for this compared to other products would be the lifespan of the product, meaning I can use SMALLER portions of it and still get the job done. Also it’s really good at staying “wet” even when cutting if that makes sense, it doesn’t easily harden on the surface you’re compounding unlike Meguires. Price tag is pretty steep for around $45-$50, however the bottle is quite large for the actual portion size I use, so I can see this bottle lasting a few months. If you do decide to buy this product, full transparency here there’s not much that “wowed” me and is quite similar to other cutting compounds like Meguires or Sonax even. Don’t expect a life changing experience that will cut time dramatically, rather expect a longer lasting product.

As with any automotive rubbing compound, you will get FAR better results if you use an electric buffer, as compared to hand buffing. I use the 3M quick-release with white foam compounding pads and Perfect-It EX compound, followed by the 3M blue ultra-fine foam pads with ultrafine machine polish. This always achieves a mirror finish on my motorcycles and cars, and the blue combo removes all swirl marks, holograms, etc. left by the rubbing compound. Dont bother with the intermediate compound or the black pads, as they are entirely unnecessary.

Good stuff, excellent. I have no idea why they call it Rubbing Compound. I guess people need to rub something to shine I guess. Anyways, been using the Meguiars Buffing compound for years for clear coat. I worked for a company that we did interiors for Helicopters with very exotic woods and veneers. I was clear coating these shelves, drawers, tables, etc... with Duratec Clear coat. Sand to 2000 and buff using this same product. Just painted a hood last week and did the sanding to 2000 grit got the buffer and Meguiars out. Took forever. Finally decided to give this a try, what a difference. I know its almost 42 bucks and the Meguiars is around 30. But the Meguiars I had to use about a 1/4 of the quart to do a hood. Came out great though. I was going to buff the trunk lid, after sitting for 7 years. Water spots and all. Was going to sand it to 2000, but decided to give this 3M a try, it cuts fast. Just used a 7 wool pad and no sanding. I only had to use very little, about a 10th of what I usually do. Was using the same buffer and pads as well. It cost more, but it works faster and better. I wont be spending 2 hours to buff a hood again with Meguiars. Get it, it works.

I have not used the standard version of the Perfect-It rubbing compound, but I have used the standard polish. The EX versions do stay wet a little longer and give you more time to do a larger area. I definitely appreciate them for that. I would not call this low-dust, however. My garage looked like Christmas after finishing my car. Granted, I went over some areas 5 separate times using my DA polisher, but dont get this for its low-dust properties. Otherwise this is an amazing rubbing compound and worth its price.

The best all around compound. Before and after pics of a headlight restore I did with the polish.
