For the best of Me, I know I had seen this many of years ago. After watching this old flick again, I remember this lol, Horror movie. Im really sorry to say, This ones for the birds. I normally give movies a good rating. Very seldom do I come across one I whish I have not ordered. But, I must admit This is one of them. You never see any monsters LOL, This goes on the whole time with this woman who thinks too much in her head. One minute She wants to leave, The next minute she wants to stay. It was all I cxould do to finish watching this. Please save You money on something besides this.

The scariest movie ever without seeing a ghost! The fact that it was done in black in white was brilliant!

If there is to be any number one on a list of haunted house films, this has to be it. Without ever showing a single ghost, Robert Wise crafts a house of such dread that you will want to run outside yourself by the end. A doctor has three guests stay in a house with a strong reputation of being haunted as part of an experiment. There are great performances all around, with Julie Harris being particularly magnificent as the troubled Nell. In a change of pace from most haunted house films preceding it, the assumption from the beginning of the film is generally that the paranormal exists, with only one real skeptic. The film plays beautifully with lighting and with hauntings mainly exhibited through noises and the behaviors and remarks of the main characters. This film still holds up extremely well half a century later. Pay no attention to the 1999 remake, which, despite its superb cast, fails because of unnecessary “updates.” All the subtlety of this film is lost in that one, and it ultimately fails as a film because of it.

One of my favorite movies. Intense without resorting to cheesy monsters or gratuitous gore.

Simply put, this is one of the best horror films of all time. Wonderful direction from Robert Wise, who understood that what you *dont* see is far scarier than what is in plain sight. The most elaborate special effect is a heavy oak door that will send a chill up your spine. The lighting and set design convey a dark, foreboding atmosphere that never lets up. Julie Harris perfectly portrays a fragile personality coming apart at the seams. The rest of the cast, like Claire Bloom and West Side Storys Russ Tamblyn (Ambers dad} are likewise excellent. Compared to this, the 1999 remake is a crashing bore, with its overblown effects and excellent but wasted cast. The original will show you what a difference it makes when a films creative team has a vision and the talent to bring it to the screen.

creeepy, scary movie with not blood or guts or gore. Just a classic Gothic horror film based on Shirley Jacksons novel. Awesome!
