> 3 dayExcellent b&w spook movie! By FAR better than the remake...which should never have been done in the first place. I bought one for me and one for my 26 year-old daughter who is a major fan of scary movies too. She loves it!

> 3 dayA film that relies on your imagination vice CGI to scare you. It may be the best of a lost genre.

> 3 dayWait for a Rainey, stormy night, turn out the lights, sit back, and have the c**p scared out of you. There are no guts or gore, but the music, camera angles are enough. Great movie, 5 stars.

26-11-2024I was genuinely pleased with the film on this great format. It appears clean and well done in the transfer department with a DTS mono soundtrack. It does come with an additional audio commentary by some of the cast and makers, most notably Julie Harris and the lovely dark haired Claire Bloom. Special Features also include the theatrical trailer. This movie should be in everyones movie library if you like Haunted House movies. Dont even bother with the remake that came out in the late 90s. This one puts that one to shame. If you want suspense and ghostly hauntings late at night in the corridors, sounds of laughing women, men talking and reciting through walls, kids squealing while you are in bed trying to sleep and pounding spirits on your bedroom door, this one is definitely right up your ghostly alley. The feel throughout the entire movie is well done as a group of investigators try to uncover the truth behind Hill House. They discover more than they bargained for and gain some answers as to why Hill House IS Haunted. Great for Halloween or weekends with the lights out at night!!

> 3 dayOne of the better book to movie adaptions, and certainly groundbreaking for the horror movie genre. Horror movies prior to this were mostly hokey, but this movie set the standard for horror movies to come....

> 3 daySo many movies that try to be scary rely too much on special effects and/or gore. Cringy and gross are not the same thing as scary. This movie is scary. The acting is great, the sets are very creepy, the story is pretty run of the mill but still quite good, and most of all the scares come from unrevealed sources of anxiety, terror, and dread. This one ranks up there with The Changeling with George C. Scott.

> 3 dayI had heard of it for years, knew that Martin Scorsese ranked it as the #1 scariest movie of all time, and decided to debut it in BluRay on a 20-foot screen with a group of college students. It looked great, but we were never scared, and our after-movie conversation quickly went critical for the heavy exposition, the artificial dialogue, and the general datedness. The problem may be less with the movie and more with us. Scorsese was raised on classic films and is less contaminated with current-culture myopia. I envy that. This film may have scared me when I was young enough not to go in with preconceived expectations.

> 3 dayThis has always been one of my favorite scarry movies. Its a mental romp in an old well maintained mansion. Little special effects, no gore, no bad language and filmed in black & white makes this movie what a ghost story should like. In an unusual querk, the film makers also followed Shirley Jacksons book very close, not exact, but wow! Wish more films did the same. Unfortunately, unlike House on Haunted Hill, the remake with Liam Neson was a supreme disappointment. So if you want a good jump or a goose pimple to rise, pop some popcorn, get a soda and have some fun. By the way, this is one of the stories that gave Stephen King, along with the real Winchester Mansion the inspiration for Rose Red.
