04-06-2025I have listing to a police scanner for many of years and when my county went digital then i went a bought a bran new radio shack digital police scanner gave close to 500 hundred dollars for it but unfortunately Once again my county made some more changes where they went to the Tenn Advance system and you had to have a phase one and phase two scanner to be able to pick up my frequencys so once again i had to pay big bucks for another police scanner and i bought the BCD536HP off Amazon i have got to say with out a doubt this is a very nice and up to date police scanner very easy to learn that the radio shack pro 197 I had .but the down side of it all is i have put in to close to 1000 dollars in two scanners in the last 4 years so hopefully that my county want change anything else around because what they did the last time costed them over 20 million dollars what i herd and also herd that before it is all over and done with everybody will eventually have to have a phase 1 and phase 2 scanner because they are suppose to upgrade all counties to that in the near future but like i said this is a very nice scanner i love it have not learned ever thing on it yet but i am getting there Good Luck Scanner World

> 3 dayThis was supposed to be the greatest ever. Ive had to have two people help me with this. Apparently, all we can do is select my county and I only can get a 30 mile radius reception. It downloads the common frequencies and so far we have not figured out if we can add other ones. It doesnt look like it. I was hoping to have the record function up and working. I first took it to a technician, and he got it sort of configured and set it to record. When it was unplugged and brought to my home everything was lost, I had to get someone else come and configure it again. And we didnt get the record feature operational. Im afraid to do anything to it for fear of losing where it is set to listen to the things I can. I should have bought a much less expensive unit that I could program myself.

> 3 dayThe BCD536HP and its portable variant the BCD436HP are the only consumer scanners that Im familiar with that can operate in a P25 simulcast environment. Signals on the same frequency from multiple sources cause time delay distortion that will render less advanced receivers useless. You can try all of the tricks with attenuation and directional antennas and they wont solve much. So if you live in a area that has simulcast P25, you youll need to spend the extra $$$ to purchase the Uniden 536/436. These are incredibly feature rich radios, far beyond the tech of last centurys programmable scanners. The downside is that they arent easy to program let alone use the high level features. Yes, you can activate a scanner configuration from your zip code. I consider it more of a gimmick that allows the radio to start receiving after its just been removed from the box. Much of what gets loaded is fluff. Scanner programming software and some familiarity with trunking, frequencies and talk-groups are a must. This information is available. You will learn a lot in the process. BTW, the manual leaves much to be desired. I hope that Uniden has plans to release a less feature rich and complicated receiver line while retaining the superior receiver/processing power of the 536/436. This is the most advanced digital scanner in the consumer market. It works VERY WELL! Youll need to be patient though, and spend HOURS becoming familiar with this radio and the programming process. For those reasons only, I rated this with a 4 stars rather than 5. Im very pleased with my initial purchase and actually own two now!

Greater than one weekIt has been almost 50 years since I owned a police scanner and man have things changed. In my first scanner, you had to add crystals for stations you wanted to receive. A later version was programmable. And now its as simple as typing in your zipcode and letting the scanner determine what channels are available in your area. I love the Uniden BCD536HP but you have to understand that these days there are a lot of frequencies that you cannot listen to anymore. One reason is that many of the state and local agencies are now using ENCRYPTED channels. These cannot be monitored with ANY public scanners. I would also suggest that you consider an external (outside) scanner antenna to increase reception.

> 3 dayConfession: Im BRAND NEW to the scanner hobby. There, now that thats out of the way. The 536HP is an absolute TOP OF THE LINE product! After spending quite a bit of time learning how this darn thing really works, the results are pretty darn amazing. Initially I was quite frustrated at the lack of channels that I could listen to in my immediate area even though I live in a major metropolitan area. A little research helped considerably so I purchased a much better antenna, placed it outside, spent a few hours reading over the manual and watching some youtube videos and actually found some listenable local channels. Spent some more time researching and learned some of the actual features of this scanner and how they work. There are an AMAZING amount of things that can be done with this scanner. If I had to do it again, I would start by doing more research, especially about antennas and proper placement for better reception. This is an unbelievably powerful scanner that quite honestly, with the right antenna, is plug and play right out of the box. FWIW I live in an Apartment with a lot of RF interference. After putting a decent antenna outside it really opened up the reception for me. I can understand the reviews that say that this is a complicated scanner and agree to a point. Ive spent quite a few hours getting this thing to where I understand it.

Greater than one weekIm a HAM radio licensee and have been for 25 years. The programming involves some dedication but was fairly straightforward. The problem is with the reception of those pesky P25 bands. No matter how well adjusted there is no balance in the reception of different units. Error numbers will go from 0 to 47 and the volume is a consistent roller coaster ride. The radio has digital AGC in the menu, but I see no indication it actually works. It was not returned as it is functional with some frustration. I have faith that Uniden will come out with a firmware update to address the problems. They are a good company and have been around for a long time.
