Greater than one weekI purchased this product around 5 weeks ago. Within 4 weeks it was making a beeping sound. I could hear the beep and I could hear the drive spinning but none of the files could be read by my computer. After not very much research I found thousands of people with the same issue. It appears this drive has issues with its heads whatever those are. They appear to be defective. I went though the Amazon website and requested a call to fix the issue. I was connected twice to people with very thick foreign accents that I could barely understand. The first call after wasting my time with troubleshooting I knew wouldnt work the man told me he would send me a ONE TIME COURTESY REPLACEMENT. As if it was my fault WD is selling a faulty and defective item. That person hung on up me without me getting anytime of confirmation of information about the replacement so I had to call back. The second person told me the exact same thing about the one time courtesy replacement which made me mad all over again. But he did confirm a replacement was coming and when to expect it. Since I know now this item has issues what happens if I get another defective item? I suggest not buying this particular WD product.

> 3 dayFigured it was finally time after around 8 years to replace my aging USB 2.0 external backup HDD from Seagate with its very slow 320gigs, especially now with my data well over hundreds of gigs with all my photo taking. Did my research as I usually do as there a total plethora of small HDDs out there nowadays which is good as consumers love choice and helps drive prices down. I really wanted a simple and integrated backup solution that did incremental backups like my old Seagate did. With Seagate drive still having the continual.... tradition of having failures, I figured it was time to go back to Western Digital for my needs. Pros: 1. Much faster USB 3.0 transfer rate, thank God USB 2.0 slowness days are over with. The drive would peak at around 140Mbytes during my backups vs the paltry 40Mbytes my old Seagate did 2. Basically inaudible but most laptop drives are nowadays unless they are total junk 3. Included software is easy enough to setup and does increment backups which is what I really wanted 4. Lengthy warranty and Western Digital reliability 5. Doesnt get very warm even during heavy usage Cons: 1. Be nice if they included a USB A- to USB C cable or adapter with USB C ports taking over in new cases 2. The glossy part is totally stupid vs older Passport models. It will become a major fingerprint magnet and show scratches very easily if you a frequent user of the drive. Cmon WD..... 3. I really wish the backup software DID NOT compress the data and instead left it in original form to save time having to decompress it when needing to restore files. 4. A built in cable that you cannot lose would be a nice addition

> 3 dayIve bought several of WDs external hard drives over the years, and this one remains my favorite. Its easy to set-up/install, but please read carefully before you just madly accept any and all offers the program may encourage. Use this HD just for its intended purpose: to back up your files and protect you in the event of a system failure and data loss. I purchased the 2TB My Passport. This is more than enough spacious realty for your files! If youre the average users, mostly backing up personal data such as photo, videos, and word docs, it may take you a lengthy amount of time to fill the Passport to capacity. The files transfer over at lightening speed. Transfers that were calculated to take a full day to complete occur in less than 5-10 minutes when using the WD My Passport. You cant beat it for all around portability and on-the-go needs!! I highly recommend regularly backing up your data in case of system failure, and WDs My Passport is a lower cost, and highy effective means to achieving that end. The peace of mind alone is worth the cost. This is a hands-down excellent product.

> 3 day2 TB is plenty for storing personal documents, media files, and etc. Its a hard drive, not an SSD, so handle it gently. If youre trying to add this as a network drive in Windows 10, you may have to enable SMB 1 in the Windows Features depending on the Windows update version youre on. Write speed was up to 110 MB/s for me over the network when copying large video files that are several gigs big. Note that the write speed does drop when youre copying over a lot of small files.

> 3 dayI purchased a MintBox Mini 2 Pro Linux computer, and the new Mint Linux likes to use the Timeshift app to make snapshots of the main disk for backup purposes. I bought this USB disk to keep snapshots on as well as to store other files. This disk worked great with Linux right out of the box, but Timeshift requires an ext4 disk. So, I used good ol’ gparted to re-format this disk to ext4, and in just a few minutes I had a very very fast USB disk. Works great; recommended.

Greater than one weekI tried other makes before being advised by a knowledgeable friend to forget about the others and just get a WD. Lo and behold. I plugged this beautiful baby into my phone which immediately recognized it (unlike the others) and asked if I wanted to configure it. I concurred and ... bingo. No instructions and computer connection needed. My only complaint is that it does not appear to have a safe means of ejecting it after use. I called WD about this and was informed that the discrepancy came about because the unit wasnt really designed for use on anything but a computer and that to safely eject I should shut off the phone before disconnecting. No biggie. Easy peasy. Its been a love affair from the time i plugged it into my SG S8 and saw that it was a match made in heaven. Its even more fun to plug them both into my laptop and start transferring and copying files from one to another. So cool.

> 3 dayNo case. Kind of portable. Capacity is more than enough for the average person. Has not failed yet.

> 3 dayThis is an easy to use hard drive. Simply plug it in and go. I use it as a backup to a backup drive. Daily I back up my data to another Passport hard drive and weekly I back up to this one. Yeah, I know I can use the Cloud, but I dont know who can look at my data on the Cloud. This suits me fine.

> 3 dayIm editing my last review about the speed of the product. However, the rest remains an issue. The box says the contents include a quick install guide and software. Not there. Went on line and the brand isnt listed on WD site, but there are numerous blank squares (where a photo might appear but wont open) that you can click and find out what they are. Clicked though them and found the product. But the Quick Installation on the menu just comes up with a cover page and an address for the support site. Went to the user manual, and the instructions were sketchy. Lots of false starts trying to get program going. Finally called support #. Good news is that I got a real person right away and the support guy steadily worked the problem for a 1/2 hour, trying all sorts of methods, and eventually got it working. When I first tried the back-up, it was only 5% backed-up after 4 hours. I then figured out that it wont back up once the computer goes into sleep mode. So you need to be at your computer doing other stuff for it to back-up. Which means that it wouldnt back up at night when I would want it to automatically do that.
