1/28/21 Ive had this drive for about 10 days now since delivery (counting today, when I write this), and, it seems to work pretty good so far. I have thrown 46 discs at it. Most of the discs that I have that Im throwing at it are dvd rom type movie and tv show discs, and Im using dvdfab for copying. There is a on/off switch on the back of the unit, which Ive seen a few reviews about the switch being hard to use, and, that is farily true. One of the 46 discs that Ive thrown at the drive was a bluray disc, there was no hesitation on switching over that I could see or tell. The only operating system that Ive used the drive with so far has been windows 7, Ive seen some complain about the idea that the drive didnt work with certain operating systems. 9/14/22 Ok, so, since having this for 4 months short of 2 years (getting this back in January of 2021), and it is still going strong. What I was talking about on my initial review about copying the dvds and stuff as I remember I didnt complete doing up to when I type this part of the review, in fact, i think I bailed on that idea. I did use the drive a fee days ago to burn some CDs (anyone remember doing that?), and it worked well.

Only complaint is that the diamond shaped do-dad on the back is actually an on / off switch . . . took me about 15 minutes to figure out it was not dead out of the box! Works great!! Would buy again.

I need to rescind my previous 1-star review on this ASUS BW-16D1X-U 16x External Blu-ray BDXL Drive. I was hasty in filing my review before doing more extensive trouble shooting. I connected this drive to another computer and it works just fine. It turns out that the Dell PC, into which it was connected, is having some kind of issue. Im contacting Dell Tech Support today and Ill let them trouble shoot this problem. My apologies to ASUS and to everyone who did NOT purchase this drive based off of my incorrect assessment of the issue. I WOULD purchase this again.

This is called a Turbo drive. The only turbo about this drive is the noise it makes. I sounds as if it is a jet plane but in reality is trying to work which it doesnt accomplish. It barely recognizes a 50 Gig disk and has trouble handling them. Dont even think about a 100 Gig. that it is advertised to use. It constantly hangs up and has to be unplugged from power to reset. I am about to throw it in the trash. PS It has been over a year now since I purchased this drive so I cant return it. Sadly I dont use it too often and I let time slip away. But to the trash it goes.

Unit does what it should. Unit is very big compared to others, and requires external power. This doesnt make it easily portable. The unit does however run well even on a very long USB extension lead. Overall Im fairly happy with the overall performance of the unit.

I have four external DVD drives. In 2012 I bought an LP that is built well and I used it a lot. It got old and stopped reading double layer DVDs so good. What I liked is this ASUS is actually an internal drive and ASUS built a shell around it to make it an external drive. The drive is sturdy and seems built to last, not like my LP Slimline that seemed flimsy (but in actuality is lasted a long time). Ive heard people say they didnt like the eject button because the blue light confused them some. The eject isnt the blue light, its to the right of the tray. No problem for me, but it isnt marked well and blends in with the facade. This external drive is probably the best external drive I have owned. The only way youre going to know though is to buy one and see for yourself.

This is a beast of a product. My previous CD/DVD/Blu-ray player/burner was a slimline model and was so inconsistent that I had no faith that it would work. I plugged this unit in and ran it for hours with no hiccups. The only down side is finding room on my desk for it. But, it is completely worth the size. Love it.
