Wow...where do I begin. The acting by Robert Van Winkle, also know as the brilliant musician Vanilla Ice is reminiscent of Jack Nicholson or Marlon Brando in their prime . Laurence Olivier wishes he had Van Winkles depth of emotion. Strokes of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro can be seen in Van Winklles larger than life screen persona. Little known fact, Van Winkle beat out Pacino , De Niro and Dustin Hoffman for the part of Johnny. The directing? Impeccable. David Kellogg show he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Hitchcock, Kubrick , and Spielberg.Kellogg draws you in with his pace and eye for creating emotional scenes that resonate in the depths of your soul. I must also mention the incredible writing by David Stenn. Kurosawa and Francis Ford Coppola who? They can only hope that one day they can write a screenplay as epic and engaging as Cool As Ice. Snubbed at the Oscars ( a behind the scenes conspiracy to keep Cool As Ice off the list for Best Picture is well documented ) this is still a timeless movie that gives Citizen Kane , The Godfather , and Ben Hur a run for the money as one of the top films in cinematic history.

The story is very, very simple, but HEY...if you are a Vanilla Ice fan, this is definitely a must-have collectible. The soundtracks are SUPERB ! I strongly recommend buying the video and the soundtrack album. Too bad, not all of the songs in the film are in the album. Youll have a grand time watching the film. GO ICE !

Seriously though... Vanilla Ice has the acting skills of a piece of driftwood. Oh man, this movie is terrible. Its so terrible that I found myself cracking up the majority of the time. Its so mind-numbingly bad that I actually kinda liked watching it. But I just couldnt bring myself to give this crapfest a four or five star rating, no matter how many times I laughed at it. Its basically Vanilla Ice trying to be a neon-clad James Dean with fantastic pickup lines such as, Drop that zero and get with a hero. Do I really need to say anything about that one? Didnt think so. My favorite scene of the movie would probably be the one where he magically jumps his motorcycle over a fence without a ramp. Who needs physics? Not Ice. So if youre bored (and preferably drunk and/or high), pop this cheesefest in your old VCR.

With a script from the dream team of Akira Kourisawia and Stanley Kubrick, the pressure was all on the shoulders of director David Kellog. Coming through like a bull in a china shop, Kellog delivers a modern answer to Bergmans Seventh Seal that not only uppes the ante, but says, Im all in. Let us not forget the jacket. With its leather stiched cries of passion it is reminicent of a classically trained Adler student, it delivers a tour de force in its delivery of lines like Sex me up! Down by law and Faith is a torment. It is like loving someone who is out there in the darkness but never appears, no matter how loudly you call. Cool As Ice also employs a number from Pulp Fiction, using the book of Leviticus 3:14 to drop wisdom on us with the quote Drop that zero and get with the hero. Method to the end, Ice still resides in the Southern California community that this harrowing documentary was shot in, battling injustice and intolerance with his mighty yellow motorcycle.

Throughout the ages, cultures have been defined by the peak artistic creations spawned by the ideas and tenets that the civilization held dear to them. The Renaissance had the Sistine Chapel and the Mona Lisa. The Baroque era had the Bach Concertos and Beethovens Ninth Symphony. To truly define our era, the 20th century, one need not look at trivialities like Gone With The Wind or Citizen Kane to ask themselves the true question, Who am I? Truly no other movie captures the strength and longevity of our times, our lives, our cultures as good as Cool As Ice. The sheer artistry puts any Astaire/Kelly routine to shame. The plot, epic in its scope, yet humbled to represent the common man and his plight through a wicked society, seemed to have been crafted by Hawthorne, so brililant and deep were the emotions. The poignancy of such lines as It aint where you from, its where you at symbolize the rugged individualism that America represents. You can almost feel the red, white, and blue oozing out of Vanilla Ice. His stirring performance makes James Dean seem like a square. He transcends the film medium as well, as his musical score, rife with emotional turbulance not seen since Straviskys Le sacre du printemps, captures the essence of how our troubles can be washed away by believing in oneself. Vanilla Ice is America, and America is Vanilla Ice.

There are super hero movies, there is what Martin Scorsese calls “cinema”, then there is Cool as Ice. This movie exists to remind us that the 90’s weren’t as awesome as we remember. It’s a highly entertaining train wreck and the perfect thing to show your kids so they are totally convinced you’re not cool, nor have you ever been. How Rob Van Winkle didn’t get an Oscar nod for this escapes me.
