As I saw this movie as a child I told my children about it and so we looked everywhere for it. Amazon was the only place we were able to find it. The kids loved it

Leonard Plinth Carnell would say: “Simply awful!” Truly an embarrassment. I was embarrassed for “Vanilla Ice” and everyone in this stinker. I rented the movie and have not watched the regular version yet. I bought the RiffTrax version for humorous reasons and it was hilarious. Not sure I can watch the regular version now. I may try for a refund since I have not watched a second of it.

Whenever I feel like a really light, fun movie, Cool As Ice delivers. Vanilla Ice stars as our young man who sees a girl on a horse, and jumps the motorcycle hes on across the fence where shes riding her horse. Yep yep, this is how the story goes. Its just full of little things like that. With Vanilla Ices yep yeps, and Lose the Zero and Get with the Hero philosophy, who can resist? Hip hop dances and Vanilla Ice and his posse in a small town, well, you can just imagine. This isnt exactly a fish out of water story, but these guys are definitely out of their own zone. Still great music, dances and brilliant 80s clothing.

For over fifteen years the brothers Sid have been exposed to some of the best..and the worst B that the world has to offer from every genre available. However we may have met the ultimate strange low budget experience in the 1991 smash hit Cool as Ice starring the original white gangsta Vanilla Ice, and his baggy spray paint pants. When we saw it was going to be on last night there was no way possible it could be passed on as the amount of promise was so very large. When you have the chance to expand your B review empire with an entry from a guy that got hung by his ankles over a balcony by Suge Knight you just have to hop on it. Our high top, triple cuts in the eyebrow sporting star plays a straight up gangsta named Johnny thats got the hots for a goody goody named Kathy. Its the typical bad boy liking good girl while parents fume story that has plagued the film world for so many years. You can pretty much predict everything thats going to happen except for the unreal dialogue thanks to Ice Ice baby. Van Winkle does eventually earn the parents respect once he rescues Kathys kidnapped little brother, who idolizes the 90s rap sensation, from a very pathetic mafia syndicate. Wow is the one term to sum up what was witnessed in Cool As Ice. Whats quite perplexing is why this one got some 1 star ratings. Obviously the movie sucks, but you should be so well aware of that from the sheer fact it stars VANILLA ICE! How could you possible expect anything but a hilariously terrible movie? Really its something that should be watched by people suffering from extreme depression who would snap out of it within minutes of the movie rolling. They would say oh man at least Im not Vanilla Ice and be so happy by that thought they could resume fun and productive lives. If youre down for an evening of WTF moments and disbelief from Ices one liners then this baby is a must for you.

This film is of course a remake of Langs 1930 masterpiece Kalt wie Eis, which portrayed the descent of German racecar driver Udo Weissjunge into the debauched underworld of Weimar Germany and his eventual triumph over the scathing press which denounced him. Cool As Ice remains true to Langs expressionist vision and style, but goes further into what might be defined as a Dadaist outlook, turning art on its head and reveling in the anti-art. The wild colors and styles, along with the random and fragmented dialogue, mock the post industrial, information producing west and its dependence on order and logic. This certainly does not suggest the film is illogical, because even at its most absurd, the commentary becomes clear when viewed in its totality. Dmitri Shostakovich composed music for an animated version of Alexander Pushkins tale The Priest and His Worker Balda, and rather than have the music conform to the film, the film conformed to the music. Director David Kellogg wisely adheres to this idea and allows the eternal Mr. Ice to shape the films direction and properly represent the concept of the humanist serf indentured to his principles. Ice is on a quest for universal morality, and rather than reverting to the comfort which faith and idealism offer to the weaker of the species, he commands his camp followers to drop the zero and get with the hero. Is he referring to the ancient hero as an exemplar or the more modern, flawed hero? Mr. Ice leaves this open to interpretation, but it is clear he demands more than just casual contemplation, both from his on screen contemporaries and from his audience. The fact that this critically acclaimed work did not win best picture is clear proof of the bankruptcy of the Oscar committee.
