This is my second external SSD from La Cie. I use them as redundant backups, and they are almost as fast as my internal SSD. Compact size, rugged external housing, and in the case of the new drive, has two ports.

I bought this for college since my major uses a lot of programs that require a lot of storage. It came with two wires, one that will plug into a USB-C and one that will plug into a USB. I use both since my Macbook requires a USB-C and when I present my projects in class I need to use the USB cable. The hard drive is very easy to use and set up and is very durable as well.

Great product and this is the second one I have. This has now got all my movie collection on the drive and is quick enough for streaming services such as Plex. 5TB is not that much more that the 2, so it seems like a no brainer.

They state, Thunderbolt speeds up to 510MB/s with SSD (HDD up to 130MB/s). This was not true for me! I own about 20 external drives, so I am quite familiar with what to expect. This drive is among the slowest I have encountered. I have a 6 year old USB 1 drive that speedier than this drive. Using a MacBook Pro 2018 with Thunderbolt 3 USB 3.1 connections, this drive transfers data at the rate of about 25 MB per second, not the 510 MB stated on the product. I am less than impressed at these speeds. For example, I am transferring 2 TB of data right now, and it will take about 24 hours to complete the process. If you do the math, it is about 25MB per second...a far cry from their advertised speeds. Even at 130MB per second, the minimum of what they state, this job would take 4 hours, not 24 hours. The other annoying thing about this drive is that it states that it is USB 3.0 compatible but it is not Thunderbolt 3. They do provide all of the cabling you will need to connect to most any computer, but there is a pre-installed cable that wraps around the drive and tucks in at the end. If you own a computer that uses this connection, then you are good as gold. But if your computer doesnt have this connection, then you are stuck with the cable wrapped around the drive that you will never use. Its annoying and it is in the way and it cannot be removed. While I agree with the idea of what Lacie is trying to do, it only serves those people who own computers that use that specific cable connection. If you dont have a computer with that connector, then its a useless appendage and an annoyance. I would expect to see better performance and product from a company like Lacie. I own many of their older drives, so I thought to give them another shot, but sadly disappointed. And lastly, I paid a premium of about 80% more for this drive over a similar drive, just so that I could take advantage of the USB Thunderbolt speeds, only to find the speed to be about 5% or at best 10% of the stated transfer speeds. One final point of fact, I took a 335 GB group of files and simply duplicated them on the drive itself....meaning that the information was not transferred from one device to another device...they were just copied on the same drive itself. That task took more than 4 hours. If you do the math, you will find that the transfer (duplication) speed was 23.3 MB per second!

I have three other Lacie hard drives and have loved them. This one, depicting itself as portable, was almost as heavy as my laptop. Nothing portable about it. To further my disappointment with this purchase, Filmtools charged me almost $50 to return this hard drive. As a long time Prime customer with Amazon, I was shocked by this exorbitant restocking fee. I cannot determine where I got notice that my return would be charged almost $50 to return an item on Amazon. Surely, during a pandemic, both LaCie and Amazon should be sensitive that charging almost 20% to restock an item is piracy.

Bought this drive with the reputation of LaCie (having 3 more such drive with Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.0. Never had issues until I bought this specimen. Not only it is not recognized by a regular OS drive utilities, but it actually asks you to use their Seagate, obviously not LaCie utility. Horrible experience. Never buy this drive. Being using LaCie on Mac, Linux and Windows with the OLD LaCie -- never had a problem. Seagate screwed up the copmanys best lines of products. But them what is new. This one is not recognized as a 5TB size by anything -- neither Mac, Linux nor Windows. What kind of fresh hell is this? Seagate? What the hell product did you come up with, dear Seagate? Is it an apple, pear, orange or simply a flop? Why? It is not enoigh the Google owns you guys, you just have to give in to your precious data storage too -- Seagate. Once exemplary, now the bottom of the hole. Will NEVER BUY LaCie after Seagate flop miracle!!! Suggest DO NOT BUY to anyone who respects themselves as specialist in the field or simply advanced consumer. APPARENTLY SEAGATE CAN BUY 6 GOOD REVIEWS, BUT CAN YOU TRUST THESE AT ALL? NO RESPECT FOR SUCH COMPANY FROM ME! With disrespect Very disappointed customer!!!

I use it on a Mac Pro, so I use the TB connector. I can tell when its been idle for a while, as there is a pause while the disk spins up. I wish SSDs werent so darn expensive. Anyway, its definitely OK for files you dont need on an SSDs.
