> 3 dayBought this drive with the reputation of LaCie (having 3 more such drive with Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.0. Never had issues until I bought this specimen. Not only it is not recognized by a regular OS drive utilities, but it actually asks you to use their Seagate, obviously not LaCie utility. Horrible experience. Never buy this drive. Being using LaCie on Mac, Linux and Windows with the OLD LaCie -- never had a problem. Seagate screwed up the copmanys best lines of products. But them what is new. This one is not recognized as a 5TB size by anything -- neither Mac, Linux nor Windows. What kind of fresh hell is this? Seagate? What the hell product did you come up with, dear Seagate? Is it an apple, pear, orange or simply a flop? Why? It is not enoigh the Google owns you guys, you just have to give in to your precious data storage too -- Seagate. Once exemplary, now the bottom of the hole. Will NEVER BUY LaCie after Seagate flop miracle!!! Suggest DO NOT BUY to anyone who respects themselves as specialist in the field or simply advanced consumer. APPARENTLY SEAGATE CAN BUY 6 GOOD REVIEWS, BUT CAN YOU TRUST THESE AT ALL? NO RESPECT FOR SUCH COMPANY FROM ME! With disrespect Very disappointed customer!!!

> 3 dayIt appears to be saving all data on our iMac. This will of course be critical should the iMac have a melt down. However, for someone, who like most people, is not a computer or tech nerd, setting it up was anxiety provoking. It is not, plug it in and your set. It was particularly nerve racking when it said that using it with an iMac required reformatting. Then you need to “erase”. I am always nervous when I have to erase. Luckily I have a Apple expert friend who assisted me via the phone. It wasn’t easy, but it appears to be functioning.

Greater than one weekThese are great hard drives for travelers in need of a not too delicate option to cover loads and loads of video footage.

Greater than one weekThis drive is a good choice for people that are currently using TB1 Macs without USB 3 ports (like a 2011 iMac). Sure, the spinny hard drive wont saturate the TB connection, but its a heck of alot faster than the USB 2.0 ports on my iMac and wont be totally unsupported on my next Mac like the FW800 solution.

> 3 dayFor off-site storage of backups, I wanted an external drive to house multiple volumes (backups of two late-model Macs and a few external [media] drives), including bootable clones of the Macs (using Carbon Copy Cloner). Apples file system is now APFS (having moved away from MacOS Extended aka HFS+), which is designed for SSD drives. All my source drives are formatted APFS (naturally). ** Spinning HDD drives 5400rpm or slower are NOT ACCEPTABLE for use in APFS, so this product is not ideal for new MacOS operating systems. EDIT, TO BE MORE CLEAR: This HDD device can only be formatted as HFS+. Clones of newer APFS Macs can be stored on this HFS+ formatted device. HOWEVER, APFS clones on HFS+ devices WILL NOT BE BOOTABLE. So, Im returning it. Unfortunately, I may have to build my own (EXPEN$IVE) all-SSD, single-device backup solution. RHETORICAL QUESTION: Why does LaCie bother outfitting this device with USB 3.1 Gen 2 connectivity when the physical HDD units cannot take full advantage of that speed (10Gb/s)?

> 3 dayAs a professional video editor, my entire world revolves around reliability. I’ve run this as a RAID1, every day for six months working on a documentary and not a single hiccup. AND it’s fast enough for 4K at a moderate bit rate.

> 3 dayHas never worked properly. Even if it is plugged into the computer, it doesnt recognize it. It has crashed at least 20 times since purchasing. I have had others with no problem, but this one is definitely faulty. I use it for work and also for school. But so far most have been lost during crashes. I have emailed, called, emailed again. called again, to no avail. They told me to send it to them, theyll check it out then send a new one. Only, I needed to keep the documents. I requested for them to send me a new one and a shipping label so that I could return it after I was able to transfer my documents. That never happened.

Greater than one weekThe 4gb storage is great and so is the rugged durability. I have several of these now - one for photos, one for music, etc. The portability is very convenient.

> 3 dayGreat affordable drive. Use it as an external bootable Windows 10 drive via bootcamp. Not trivial to get a system out there but there are instructions on the web on how to do it. I have other (2 and 4 TB) drives of the same make and they also work great for extra storage and as TimeMachine drives. Over the years that I have had LaCie Rugged drives, Ive never had one fail (unlike other makes that have failed).
