Did you know the Chinese have a different way of measuring Lumens? Reminiscint of the way AMD and Intel sparred over measuring CPU speeds at the turn of the Millennium, Many of the inexpensive Chinese flashlights make claims of 400, 1000, 1200, or 1600 Lumens. The joke is that the 1200 and 1600 lm flashlights are only using an LED module that delivers 1000 lumens under ideal conditions (a battery that delivers 10W); Many rarely come close to the 1000lm claim. My point.. The 1000+ lumen lights might be around 300-400 lumens but compared to a 130lm MAG light, the MAG light is a formidable competitor. MAG doesnt over inflate their Lumens. In fact, when comparing the MAG light (2D or 3D) to the 300/400lm torch style lights (with beam patterns / distance set to match) the MAG light looks brighter. Plus, if you need to defend yourself, would you rather use a metal flashlight with 3-D cells, or a flashlight that takes AAA batteries and is made with recycled metal that would probably crack on impact?

BRIGHT! Awesomely bright! I use it at work when Im delivering feed to farms at night and I can still see clear when shining at the other end of the barns. The only problem mine has is with the spring that hold the batteries in place, if pushed in properly, it doesnt quite make the power connection, but if its pulled out and just barely pushed back into the end piece, it works perfect.

The quality I have come to expect of a Maglite. Light weight, built well, durable

I got tired of getting the $10 flashlights at the hardware store or the LED freebee at Harbor Freight, so I decided to spend the $29 and get a 3-D cell Maglight. I had the AA maglite before and they were great, but this is AWESOME!! This is the LED version (which I was skeptical about), but it has a massive amount of light, a great spot light and it is heavy enough so whacking someone with it would hurt them more than you. Hopefully this will last a few years... normally the $10 lights last a year or two until they conk out and I need batteries that cost more than the light to get to work again... this is suppose to last for 300 hours of being on, which is like 20 years for me, so lets see.

I made the mistake of glancing at the light as I was putting battries in saw spots for the next 10 mins.

OK, you are in the market to buy a new flashlight and are sick and tired of all the cheapies you have purchased over the years that break when dropped, cease to turn on because of a bad switch or even require heavy, expensive lantern type batteries that never seem to last as long as you think they should. Well, simply put, buy this flashlight! It is just as well built as described and should last a lifetime. You can drop it from three feet and walk away with a functioning flashlight. Reminds me of the all metal ones from when I was a kid that lasted forever, only this one is made even better. Confused by the number of lumens like me? Ive saw lumen outputs range from 27 to over 500 when doing my flashlight research. I have no way of comparing all of those outputs but the168 lumen, 2 D-cell version Magliite I purchased from Amazon seems to be just the right amount of light for long range but low and wide enough for walking your dog. Cant decide between the 2 D-cell or the 3 D-cell? This really took me awhile to decide on but I think I made the right choice. The 2-cell is hefty but manageable for kids and women yet sturdy, powerful and compact enough to satisfy any man who does not need to have it function as a club. Here are the likes: The adjustable rotating beam size which goes from concentrated spot to very wide halo type beam which can light up a whole yard or sidewalk. I never had that feature before and I actually use it every time I go outside in the dark by simply rotating the bezel which can move in either direction. The fact that it is an economical LED as in it uses ten percent of the power compared to an ordinary bulb. Do you think your old non-LED flashlight would last for seven hours at full brightness like this one? And when you finally need new batteries they are easy to purchase and inexpensive. The solid feel and functionality of the on/off button which allows you to flash the light for just a quick burst or to signal if you need help by depressing slightly and releasing. For always on without holding just depress it until it clicks and it will stay in fixed on mode. And last but not least it is American made... yes really. Downsides? None so far. I saw that a few reviewers said the batteries were hard to remove or leaked. Well, I hate to tell you this but its the fault of the batteries and not the flashlight. Use reputable brands and not junk market ones. If I encounter any negatives over time as that is the real judge, Ill update my review. Conclusion: Wait for the best Amazon price and Buy IT!

Maglite LED 3-Cell D Flashlight, Black

Like many other manufacturers, Mag Instrument has expanded its line of flashlights to include models featuring LED-type bulbs. Why? LEDs are virtually unbreakable, and they are far more efficient than incandescent bulbs. As the product name suggests, this Maglite runs on 3 D-type batteries, which will take a while to run out thanks not only to the LEDs but also to Mag Instrument"s "Intelligent Energy Source Management," which balances high brightness against extended battery life. The bright, powerful beam adjusts from spot to flood simply by rotating the head. The case is made from a high-strength aluminum alloy that has been anodized inside and out, which gives you water- and shock-resistance in a lightweight package. High-quality O-rings at both openings keep water away from the batteries. In other words, this energy-efficient flashlight is almost indestructible--a good quality when it comes to the tools. Limited lifetime warranty. Batteries not included.--Josh Dettweiler
